bagged: I didn't think of trying heat, thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have enough hair to need a dryer. Fortunately, my wife is at work now.
There were made to sit and collect dust.![]()
I was keeping this $20 Wilton Mechanics Vise under wraps until I finished the resto. I'll post complete before and after pix when it's finished.
rmalkow2: This time I went to a barn sale. There were no tools. I spoke to the seller. A faraway look came to his eyes. He said....... Well, you can probably guess the rest of it.
That's a nice one for only $20. You did better than my barn sale. I never think to ask that question when I'm there and just concentrating on looking in every corner and on every table. In the heat of the moment it never occurs to me but many times they do have something hidden they forgot to put out.

Hey Lads,
Picked up a Record 21. cwazy gave me some great advice on what to look for on it and thanks for that.
While I was picking up the Record I saw the following vice. Can ye shed some light on it for me. No visible markings what so ever. Approx. 4 inch jaws. Handle was around 16 inches and over all in length was nearly 28 inches. Images below. I'd say it some sort of blacksmith vice. That's a pure guess. [emoji3]

Yea i'm looking for something big, but hard to find anything around here under $200. I really liked the Miller's Falls anvil vise I posted here from craigslist about a month ago, but too pricey for it's condition.
rmalkow: I have to confess that I poached your territory cuz this barn sale was in South Lyon. In my defense, I didn't know you at the time. If I had known you I would have dropped it at your house on my way home. Honest.
BTW - he really didn't have any tools out and I had to ask specifically for vises before he remembered he had one on a shelf. On the other hand, I asked that same question about 10 times today and it didn't produce any vises. It did produce a promising lead on a 6" Craftsman. I did get a vise today, but it was from CL and it wasn't quite a boffo deal. I'll post pictures later tonight. My time is spoken for for the rest of the day and no one named Wilton is doing the speaking. Did you call about that vise in Brighton?
Sincere apologies for posting the same thing in two threads; I try hard not to do that. I searched this thread for "WF2" but didn't come up with anything and the internet isn't very helpful.
So this vise is advertised as having 4" jaws and an 8" opening. No idea if that is jaw to jaw or includes the throat.
So is this a previous model of a machinist vise? It's listed locally for $400 and I don't think I would pay that much for it but would like to know where it sits in the Wilton line before contacting them.
Here's a pic. Any help appreciated. FWIW I seem to have suddenly developed a strange attraction to vises.![]()

Just got this 3" Holland. My first one. $20
Dr. Scott, I'm still of the opinion that the jaws were put into the molds hot, the cast poured (probably with some sort of flux) and the cast iron poured, and the heat of the molten cast would fuse the jaws in place and probability partly melt the jaws, possibly causing the "drips" you are seeing.
I'd take a look but i'm finalizing packing for a camping trip this weekend (taking an extra day) then its time for a few hours sleep before I leave very early in the AM...Got my CNC machine fixed again, and had some time before my next run of jaws. I tackled a Athol #79 that has casted in jaws and was built to be mounted on a bench with a clamp under neath the bench. I carved out a new swivel base and copied a Parker brake caliper set up. It's the small one on the left.

The Jaws were casted in and I want to replace them with bolt in sets. Yes it's only a 3" vise but it's a Athol and deserving of a second chance. I took my time cutting the very hard jaws with a carbide end-mill and wanted to see if I could figure out how they casted these inserts in place.

These cast jaws were 5/16 thick and once I cut that much off I seen the knit line of hard steel to cast steel and still do not have a clue how they put these hard inserts in place. So this 3" vise was a practice cutting method for me and I learned what works and what did not. Check out the pattern of hard insert to cast, the hard steel is very shinny compared to the dull cast. The hard insert looks like it was pored and running down the face of my cut pocket.

I have a few vises almost done and will share pictures when finished, I like how the Parker bases finished up and how well they lock down with just one lock down.

Did you have those jaws plated? Dang man, who could bear to use such a purty vise?
I got this vise on Tuesday

Today it looks like this

Not the best restore I've ever seen but I will say it looks much better in person than it does in these pictures.
