I was keeping this $20 Wilton Mechanics Vise under wraps until I finished the resto. I'll post complete before and after pix when it's finished.

rmalkow2: This time I went to a barn sale. There were no tools. I spoke to the seller. A faraway look came to his eyes. He said....... Well, you can probably guess the rest of it.

Drives, I don't start back until next Monday. It took three pictures to get all the little ones in the picture. The first two cut off the top & bottom so I had to hold the tablet higher.

Spn1025, They are my basement shoes. I have an old pair that were made in Canada before being bought by Crocs. My big toe has worn a hole all the way through I wore them so long.
The bad is when you are painting vises the top of your foot gets a polka dot paint pattern on it.

That's a nice one for only $20. You did better than my barn sale. I never think to ask that question when I'm there and just concentrating on looking in every corner and on every table. In the heat of the moment it never occurs to me but many times they do have something hidden they forgot to put out.

rmalkow: I have to confess that I poached your territory cuz this barn sale was in South Lyon. In my defense, I didn't know you at the time. If I had known you I would have dropped it at your house on my way home. Honest.

BTW - he really didn't have any tools out and I had to ask specifically for vises before he remembered he had one on a shelf. On the other hand, I asked that same question about 10 times today and it didn't produce any vises. It did produce a promising lead on a 6" Craftsman. I did get a vise today, but it was from CL and it wasn't quite a boffo deal. I'll post pictures later tonight. My time is spoken for for the rest of the day and no one named Wilton is doing the speaking. Did you call about that vise in Brighton?

Hey Lads,
Picked up a Record 21. cwazy gave me some great advice on what to look for on it and thanks for that.

While I was picking up the Record I saw the following vice. Can ye shed some light on it for me. No visible markings what so ever. Approx. 4 inch jaws. Handle was around 16 inches and over all in length was nearly 28 inches. Images below. I'd say it some sort of blacksmith vice. That's a pure guess. [emoji3]

This is the Record I picked up. There are three tapped holes in the static jaw and there is some pitting in the slide but other than that it's solid and the QR is perfect. Plan is to do the usual.

ALL: i need a little help. not sure of the maker of this vise which would be nice to know, but isn't really that important. what i'd like to know if the weld is a to hold the sleeve in or was the screw broken? there is a chip on the side of the dynamic slide which probably isn't a big deal, but with the handle bent like it is i'm concerned about the screw.

Richey: that vise looks like it's in great shape. i wonder what the holes were for or do you know?

She's missing a few bits, Peter Wright of anvil fame is one of the makers of that style vice.

Here's an advert from an old B&H catalogue (1923)

Yea i'm looking for something big, but hard to find anything around here under $200. I really liked the Miller's Falls anvil vise I posted here from craigslist about a month ago, but too pricey for it's condition.

Sigh....it's still listed, same price... good shape but way too much rust.

What would you guys say this vise is really worth in this condition?

Went to my local scrapper today. It was a ghost town... Owners were working hard to sell me stuff.

Here are a couple I found. Really nice Parker 206 but missing a jaw. Really abused Simplex. Very nice roller table. Parker was $40. Simplex $25, table $60. Oh, I didn't buy anything....just window shopping

Hey, no worries at all about coming out here for a deal. I don't believe in the "my territory" thing. And the more temptations you take from here, the more money thats left in my wallet. I can find too many things already to spend on. Looking forward to the pics.

Sincere apologies for posting the same thing in two threads; I try hard not to do that. I searched this thread for "WF2" but didn't come up with anything and the internet isn't very helpful.

So this vise is advertised as having 4" jaws and an 8" opening. No idea if that is jaw to jaw or includes the throat.

So is this a previous model of a machinist vise? It's listed locally for $400 and I don't think I would pay that much for it but would like to know where it sits in the Wilton line before contacting them.

Here's a pic. Any help appreciated. FWIW I seem to have suddenly developed a strange attraction to vises. :)

That's probably a 1980's or 1990's Wilton 400S. A nice machinist vise, but $400 is way too high in my opinion. All I can say about your new found attraction is "uh-oh" and "welcome to the club!" :bounce:

Richey: I think that those tapped holes in your Record may have been used to hold some kind of jig. On the other hand, I did recently see a picture on Craig's List of a vice with a rear swivel jaw. It looks like someone drilled and tapped holes to bolt on a steel bar to keep the jaw from swiveling. I called the phone number given but so far he has not called back.

I forgot to mention that there was no phone number in the ad so I did respond via email that I wanted to come and see what they had and make an offer.
No response yet but the ad is still up so I'm hopeful.

Joe, I really like the swivel locks on these Hollands. I finished this one a while back. <a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Holland/i-P8L2hdb/A"><img src="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Holland/i-P8L2hdb/0/S/Holland%2023-H%20%286%29-S.jpg" alt="Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug"></a>

I am always looking for Hollands after seeing how this guy was built. OH, you earned a You **** for your 3" Holland.

Got my CNC machine fixed again, and had some time before my next run of jaws. I tackled a Athol #79 that has casted in jaws and was built to be mounted on a bench with a clamp under neath the bench. I carved out a new swivel base and copied a Parker brake caliper set up. It's the small one on the left.

The Jaws were casted in and I want to replace them with bolt in sets. Yes it's only a 3" vise but it's a Athol and deserving of a second chance. I took my time cutting the very hard jaws with a carbide end-mill and wanted to see if I could figure out how they casted these inserts in place.

These cast jaws were 5/16 thick and once I cut that much off I seen the knit line of hard steel to cast steel and still do not have a clue how they put these hard inserts in place. So this 3" vise was a practice cutting method for me and I learned what works and what did not. Check out the pattern of hard insert to cast, the hard steel is very shinny compared to the dull cast. The hard insert looks like it was pored and running down the face of my cut pocket.

I have a few vises almost done and will share pictures when finished, I like how the Parker bases finished up and how well they lock down with just one lock down.

Wilton 800 vise... I was fortunate enough to come across the Holy Grail of vises ..and decided I'm selling it.
This thing is massive nearly 30 inches long closed. Excellent condition.

Dr. Scott, I'm still of the opinion that the jaws were put into the molds hot, the cast poured (probably with some sort of flux) and the cast iron poured, and the heat of the molten cast would fuse the jaws in place and probability partly melt the jaws, possibly causing the "drips" you are seeing.

I agree it makes sense that way but the hard jaws are not square or do they have undercuts or even symmetrical except for the Reed jaws like Carla's. It almost looks like these toolsteel faces were pored in during casting. So many vises made this way but really nothing written about it.

Did you see the jaw of the vise with the cast in jaw that was missing? the cast iron was ribbed lengthwise, presumably to give more surface areas for bonding.

Hmmmm Does anyone have a older "Henley's book of Formulas and Processes" ? Maybe its in there? :dunno: I'd take a look but i'm finalizing packing for a camping trip this weekend (taking an extra day) then its time for a few hours sleep before I leave very early in the AM...

After seeing the recent posts about tiny clamp-on vises I had to have one. Lacking a certain amount of patience, I looked on CL. I found an unidentified one and arranged to meet the seller. He just happened to bring two other vises. I wanted to buy all three but he wouldn’t budge a millimeter on his prices and he wouldn’t go for a package deal so I only bought one. There are no identifying marks. The fact that it swiveled and that the rear jaw was dynamic and slid on ways made me go for this one. The jaws measure 2⅜ inches which is 60 mm. That might be a clue as to where it was made (not around here). Anyone know this vise (probably vice)? Anyone have a guess?

I was momentarily disoriented at a garage sale yesterday. The tables were turned and the dialog was reversed. As I walked up the driveway, the nice woman said, “Are you looking for tools? I only have this vise.” When the dizziness subsided I bought it. Only $3

Dang CRS you deserve a "you ****" for that $20 Wilton and for that $3 small. And another "You ****" for Thursday yard sales!

Skrap metal, where are you? For how much? :spit:

KMScott, great job on the rebuild.

P: Thursday sales generally are fewer and farther between, but the selection can be good. Just one more benefit of retirement.

I'm still reeling from the 30" 4 jaw chuck and the lathe it was on that I saw today. It wasn't a vise but it was damned impressive. (Not at a garage sale).

I could pretend to be retired this week because of recovery from surgery, but due to crutches, my wife discouraged being out and about at Thursday yard sales :-(

Floyd: There's no need to downplay your resto. That vise looks pretty good to me.

Mr P: Sorry to hear about your surgery. I hope things went well. I had a case of Acute Medical Care a few years ago. Get some physical therapy ASAP. Maybe you could convince your wife that going to garage sales was part of the therapy, what with all the walking and bending and such.

p.s. I'm not completely serious about many things but I am serious about getting PT.

Floyd,
That restoration looks awesome! Nothing to be critical about.
I assume that you have mounted that vise with lag bolts. If I may: I would suggest that you replace those with through bolts & nuts (JMO). I ripped my Dad's vise out of the bench when it was mounted with lag bolts.
