Was browsing Amazon, and saw that the MAXX 1/4" ratchet was $27.46. According to triple-camel it's the lowest it's been. If you have Prime (or order over $35) shipping is free.

Zorro also shows the same price but shipping is $5.00.

Now the down side: Usually ships within 1 to 2 months.

So if you don't need it "today" I think it's a good deal.

Still $27.46. You have to select amazon as the seller.

The amazon listing has been appearing and disappearing for me. Wasn't there (the option to buy from amazon) an hour ago, and now it's back. Strange...

Already got one of these. Even with the good price can't justify anymore. Hopefully some other members will get in on this. Great ratchets.

These look alike.

They are very similar. See below.

Identical mechanism to the Craftsman pro.

The Armstrong version is an 88 Tooth and the Craftsman ratchet is an 84T ratchet. So they are not identical. The 84T craftsman is similar to the 84T gearwrench however. When these ratchets were first sold (the 84T craftsman ones), there were several that were shipped with mismatched pawls and gears (88T pawls or gear with a 84T pawl or gear) that caused them not to work. I believe the mechanisms don't even interchange because one of the small redesigns they did from the gearwrench 84T ratchet was to make the gear sit slightly lower, thus making the armstrong 88T rebuild kits not fit.

We had an Armstrong rep on here several years ago, and he said that they designed this ratchet for Sears, so it's no surprise.

Yeah, kind of. They are a slight modification of the 84T gearwrench ratchet. So they didn't design a brand new ratchet, just changed the cover plate from being held in by a snap ring to held in by screws (which is a lot nicer) and the handle is fairly similar to the armstrong ratchets.

Furthermore, the 84T craftsman and gearwrench ratchets have well over 100 or so cases (on here alone) of locking up and not working. Go read amazon reviews, sears reviews, etc. There are a lot of cases of the 84T ratchets failing. The 88t ratchets seem to be much more reliable. I've written quite a bit on this in the past, comparing the failure rates of the two models, and decided that because two different factories (one in the US making the craftsman pro and one in Taiwan making the gearwrench) produce these ratchets with a high lock up rate, there is something slightly off in the design of them.

How do you even design an 88 or 84 tooth ratchet symmetrically? 360/88 = 4.0909090 never ending, 360/84 = 4.28571428571 repeating never ending. Maybe the coffee hasn't kicked in for me yet, but I would think easily divisible numbers would be the only way to go.. such as 72 tooth = every 5 degrees, 120 tooth every 4 degrees, 96 tooth every 3.75 degrees, etc..

The difference between a mathematician and an engineer.

A mathematician and an engineer are standing on one side of the room with a pair of pretty girls standing on the other side. When the engineer and mathematician walk to the girls on the other side of the room, they get to kiss the girls, but the rule is that each step they take must be equal in length to half of the distance remaining. The mathematician will just never get there but the engineer gets a few inches away and says that's close enough and kisses the girl.

I would imagine ratchet design is based on the size of teeth and the resulting strength and some wear considerations more than some equally divisible tooth count figure.

I'm sure a CAD machine would have no problems with an 88 tooth ratchet.

You are correct. I'd draw the tooth profile once, then make a circular array with 88 instances at 360 divided by 88 degrees. The computer will carry way more decimals than could ever be measured. I wouldn't bother doing any math on the angles, just type in '=360/88'. It's not rocket surgery :).

So I assume that we are going to get hot off the forge ratchets. I suspect the delay is due to the factory problems they are having with their new factory. I have a pending order for a 3/8th ratchet at harry j epstein. I was told that it was pending till end of spetember that was later pushed back to late october. The rep from harry's said something about manufacturing issues due to a new plant and equipment malfunctions. Is there any here than might be able to confirm that is the reason for the delay?

Apex shut down one of their USA plants and consolidated everything to another plant somewhere else (or maybe it was they shut down both plants and built a new one....). Either way, yes, Apex (Armstrong) is currently struggling to put out more inventory.

Amazon just sent me a shipping notification for the ratchet. Price has jumped back up to $42.03, however it's still showing "temporarily out of stock." :headscrat

This is likely from the new consolidated plant, anything aside from mechanical function and finish that I should look out for?

August 17. It was already on backorder, however it was ~$40 at the time.

I posted this thread when the price dropped. Then I got them to price match my unfulfilled order at the same time.

I ordered a 1/2" drive armstrong ratchet from warehouse deals and got this 1/4" flex head ratchet instead. Not sure if I should keep it or send it back. It was $31 total.

So, mine was at home waiting for me last night. Came in a padded envelope that looked as if it had been run over , but the contents were fine .

The aesthetics are great, and cursory use show a smooth, but dry, mechanism. Once lubed I'm sure it will match my 3/8" MAXX. For the price, I wish I'd gotten two.
