I want to remodel my garage for automotive detailing, and was just wondering what tpye of cabinets everyone is buying. I see alot of Gladiator stuff, but is that the best? Anything else out there that you all like better (and are more reasonably priced)? Thanks.

Old kitchen cabinets work great. Can find stuff on Craigslist.

I have a bunch of cabinets I pulled from a hospital demo. Paid $300 and pulled what I wanted along with a friend. One of the sinks he pulled he ended up not using and sold for $700.

In my opinion the best is Lista, but it's very pricey. I ended up with Gladiator, because it had a good balance of quality, features and price. I recommend the Premiere line or the new Pro series (only installed by certain dealers). Check Sears frequently for some good deals on the Premier line. I got two 6-foot work benches for 1/3 the price and two wall cabinets at half price. The rest I got for about 25-30% off.

Free sounds especially good. I'll check Sears and just watch for good pricing since I'm not in a real hurry.

Gladiator (see below, more cabinets to come). They are priced ok, nice looking, and made from metal (not wood or MDF). I was not able to find anything better at any of the stores I visited.

Brand new custom made from my wife's work... Uppers are 54" tall and are 1/3-2/3 split with by-pass doors, 8" deep. Lowers are 41" tall and 24" deep. Linier total is 60'. Total of about 40 drawers and two knee holes areas. Can't recall how many cabinet doors on the lowers. They are waiting at the wife's shop for my dry-wall guy to finish, or should I add they are waiting for him to start also...

Mine are a mix of homemade, and freebies from kitchens, schools .
All might receive a coat of black paint to match the tool box ?

Everything is just so darned expensive.

Your first question though is what is best! Best and inexpensive do not go hand-in-hand. For the most part you get what you pay for.

I originally bought some inexpensive oak kitchen cabinets from Lowes that lasted a few years. But the extreme temperature/humidity swings here in Oklahoma took its toll on the particle board sides and shelves and they fell apart in about 5 years.

Since your not in a hurry, check your local sears stores in the clearence section and sometimes you can score some deals on Gladiator. Like I said above, I bought two brand-new-in-the-box, 6-foot benches that have an MSRP of $529.99 and a Sears regular price of $449.99, for only $137.50 each. And two of my wall cabinets have an MSRP of $229.99 and a Sears regular price of $179.99, I got for $90 each because they were on sale (50%) off and I bought them during a Freinds and Family sale for an additional 10% off. And the rest of my Gladiator stuff I got for at least 25% off Sears regular prices. But the deals are out there!

Buy 2x4's and plywood and get started :D

Which probably isn't a bad idea. Think about it.

Spend $x on woodworking tools like a tablesaw, planer, joints, mitresaw (if needed) and $x on plywood and hardware. Build what you want to fit your space to your standards. You'll probably come out ahead of what a cabinet shop would charge and you still have the tools for future projects or you can even sell them if you want to recoup the money.

No kidding.

If you want to invest in "garage" cabinets by all means go ahead, but if your a cheap ******* like me... Craig's List is your friend!

There's nothing wrong with old kitchen cabs in the garage. Hell the hospital ones I pulled are nicer than alot of kitchen cabs even.

Craigslist or build.

Most people have the basic woodworking tools and basic skills to do it.

RE: Coleman Cabinets

RE: Coleman Cabinets -- I 'm pretty sure they're MDF, and a family friend has some and the doors NEVER stay aligned.

I'll never forget this saying that I read at a local parts house; it puts it all in perspective: "Quality is like buying oats. If you want clean, fresh oats, you must pay a fair price. However, oats that have already been through the horse are always cheaper..."

I've also been shopping for cabinets lately. The Coleman cabinets on display at my local Lowes have this same problem. They have 3 or 4 cabinets set up and every single one of them has doors that are out of alignment with each other. If they can't make the floor models look good, I doubt they'd last very long in my garage.

One of my garages has kitchen cabinets from a remodel.

The other has RTA (Ready To Assemble) Mills Pride from Home Depot; I was in a hurry, the wife wanted everything to match, and they seemed to be a good value. I do not regret the decision.

I get compliments on both garages.

I like the new red and blck line that sears carries. Lista cabinets however are known to be the best.

On MDF...look just like the Ultimate Garage cabinets I have.

Not the sturdiest things in the world....but I'm easy on cabinets/furniture and the looks won me over.

I've had the Coleman cabinets for about four or five years now, they are made by O'Sullivan, who make lots of that cheap home furniture that you assemble yourself, like tv stands, etc. They are OK for what they are, very inexpensive, look ok, the melamine finish holds up well. The doors never fit right from the start, but with some tweaking I was able to get them into acceptable alignment. They are holding up well for cheap cabinets and serve the purpose of holding junk in them. I bought them because I really didn't have the time to build a nice set, which is what I eventually will do.

I was planning on the all aluminum Moduline cabinets...yes, they are pricey, but look fantastic. $$ will tell what I really end up with. Have a boating buddy coming over to give me some ideas - he is a cabinet maker and needs a little more work

I'll use the one coming out of our kitchen re-do. Ooo - if I bought a cabinet for the garage before I got working on the kitchen, you'd see my obit in tomorrows paper. ;)

I have the Coleman TD2 and my doors stay aligned and I have them loaded up pretty good. I did however add some extra pieces in the back and glued all the joints during assembly with waterproof wood glue.

The best cabinets (upper and lower) for me was to build my own.

I made mine similar to kitchen cabinets with the exception that I only used quality plywood instead of OSB.

Granted, I do not currently have doors or drawers (both could potentially be added at a later time), but they were inexpensive to make and they are the size that I wanted. My tops for my lower cabinets are stainless that I was able to get fabbed up at work for cost.

I chose not to do doors or drawers at this time to keep costs low and to keep my first real (solo) woodworking project simple. Dad used to help me with all my woodworking projects, but he is several hours away now.

I currently have approximately 60ft lower cabinets and 36ft uppers. I have about $600 in materials (not counting the stainless tops)

Everyone is different, but this is what worked best for me.

I should post an updated pic showing them painted........

It's all about your budget. Gladiator is fine if your in the $1000 range. If your can stretch your budget get Redline for wood or baldhead/lista/moduline for metal. I love big box displays with cabinets that are either damaged or misaligned.
