SK Frustration

One month from now Harry Epstein will be holding SK Day. I want to take the opportunity to purchase a complete set of 3/8" drive, chrome sockets. Here's where things get frustrating.

SK 49 pc set #94549
$165 from ToolTopia
◦Pro Ratchet: 7.5"
◦Pro Thumbwheel Ratchet: 1.5"
◦Extensions: 3", 6"
◦Universal Joint
◦SAE: 1/4" - 7/8"
◦Deep SAE: 3/8" - 7/8"
◦Metric: 6mm - 19mm
◦Deep Metric: 10mm - 19mm

This still leaves me without a complete selection. In order to fill out the set I would need the following:

◦SAE: 15/16", 1"
◦Deep SAE: 1/4", 5/16", 15/16", 1"
◦Metric: 20mm - 26mm
◦Deep Metric: 6mm - 9mm, 20mm - 26mm

Each one of these singular sockets costs $7-$18
################################################
I am also considering this route:
$75 #4613 SAE: 1/4" - 1"
$100 #4413 Deep SAE: 1/4" - 1"
$100 #3919 Metric: 6mm - 24mm
$100 #1854 Deep Metric: 6mm - 19mm

This still means I would need:
Metric: 25mm, 26mm
Deep Metric: 20mm - 26mm
################################################

Someone needs to point me in the direction in which I can most cheaply acquire a complete set. Don't patronize me. My math skills are exceptional. I'm looking for suggestions on where to buy or if there is a set I don't know to exist. For example, if I were looking for 1/4" drive sockets then I would buy the #91860 set which covers every possible size. But why is there not a 3/8" drive equivalent?

Sadly, sounds like you're worried about filling a Hansen rack or similar. The SK 94549 has sockets in the sizes I would be using with 3/8" drive, smaller, I'd go to 1/4" drive, bigger to 1/2" dr. I'd also be using impact sockets, with the impact for the larger sizes. If it is about filling a rack, you might consider shortening the racks with a bandsaw or whatever, that's what I did. But then, open spots for sockets I would never use don't bother me either.
Good luck, Jim

Someone tell me what application they use a one inch socket on. I will use a wrench on rare occasion on hydraulic fittings but sockets rarely work on them. I don't think I have ever used a i inch socket'

Hydraulic adapters or fittings are about it, and that's rare, as I think that's in JIC. I generally deal with ORFS fittings, which will have a 1 1/16" plug or adapter on a 1 1/8" female fitting. For nuts and bolts, sizes generally jump from 15/16" to 1 1/8".

It's not a matter of filling up a socket rail. I want a full selection of 1/4" and 3/8" chrome sockets because I'm not going to buy 1/2" chrome sockets. If I need 1/2" they are going to be impacts. If the engineers at SK feel that a 3/8" drive can withstand 1" fasteners then that's who I'm going to stick with since they are ultimately responsible for warrantying it.

Industrial, plenty of 1'' nuts and bolts.

Most kits don't include the 15/16 & 1" because most people use the larger size (1/2" drive). Same goes with the 1/4 & 5/16 in 3/8 drive, you are better off using 1/4" drive tools which allow you better control of the amount of torque being applied.

If you need to have those sizes, just buy them......but most kits like the one you posted are no different than the SK, including Snap On & Wright and even my old Bonney set. So don't blame SK for not supplying a set with the tiny and largest sockets.

And yes, I have the 3/8 drive 15/16 & 1" Snap On socket and for all intents and purposes, never use them.

Personally, I would save your money, buy the kit you listed above and move on.

The larger sizes in 3/8 drive are handy for low torque applications (sensor's, brass fitting's, ete..). They are also handy with low clearence areas since 1/2 drive ratchets with a 3/8 drive body are uncommon.

I dont think they would always take the place of a 1/2 drive chrome though. Torque spec's may prove too much for 3/8 drive. That said I dont have many chrome 1/2 drive sockets at work, a couple are for specfic uses's like pulling steering wheels ete..

Just my experiance.

It confuses me when you list items as "Standard SAE"; to me that's like saying "Standard Standard".

That is all.

I use my 3/8 drive 1" socket all the time, various sensors and things. Which reminds me I need to buy a thinwall one...

Where is Adam C when you need him?

I believe SK doesn't cover the full range in a set because of the nice cases they come in. I just recently replaced all my home sockets with SK, and couldn't be happier. Still in the same boat with filling in some sizes that weren't in the sets, but I'm keeping my sets in the SK boxes, and not on pegs.

I already spent the extra money on the work sets to complete sets, not doing it at home. :D

I just looked and while Cornwell starts at 1/4" they only go to 7/8"

Like has been said companies only include the most popular a sizes for the drive size of the set. They assume you either purchase a smaller/bigger drive size set, or purchase the extra socket separately. I for one would rather not have to buy a set with sockets that I rarely use and would rather save a few bucks to put towards other tools I will use more often

Fuel inlet on a Quadrajet. :)

I realize your SIM Socket City is all planned out and I wasn't on the committee, but if you're going to limit one range and go all out on other(s), you should go the Euro route (there's a post on here about it somewhere) by going for a full 1/4" set, and a full 1/2" set and not be anti-chrome in 1/2".

More fuel on the fire.

When I see "Standard SAE", I read it as "Standard Society of Automotive Engineers" :dunno:

If sk included all those sizes the price would go way up. And most people would go to half inch on those sizes unless they where a low torque application. Most all tool company's do the same. At one time gw sold a 3/8 master socket set (just sockets) but they are the only one that I can think of that did that.

If the set covered everything we would have people bitching about the price.

There is always a trade off.

Here it was decided in a way you don't like. So, pony up and spend the money to build the full set you want.

Or don't.

The SK blow molded 1/4 and 3/8 drive sets are some of the most complete socket sets available at a very reasonable price. They'll cover probably 95% of the fasteners most auto techs encounter on a regular basis and are a great starting point.
You can easily add additional sockets as needed. However, Just because SK makes a socket doesn't mean you have to buy it :wtf:

For example, you might need a 20 mm wrench but, few people if any have used 20mm sockets :dunno: the same can be said for a 3/8 drive 6mm deep socket.

You may want to add a breaker bar, longer extensions, and flex head ratchets but, I don't want to add to your frustration.

just for shits and giggles i priced out the hansen tray filling options...

from tooltopia... using the 49pc set and buying individuals to fill the trays 313.87

buying just socket sets and a few singles... it was over $350

so for the OP... the 49pc set even with buying singles gets you more for less because not only do you get sockets you get the ratchets, extensions, and universal joint
