Went to a tool auction yesterday. Being a rainy day with nothing else to do, I expected there to be 400 guys there and deals few and far between.
Boy, was I wrong. There were maybe 50 people there Some of the antique planes, Sorby lathe chisels and a few other things went a little high, but overall, stuff was more than reasonable.

How about a Hamilton Horizontal Milling Machine for $50?

It's cute as a button with a 3x14" table and a 1MT spindle.

Next I bought its cousin, a Hamilton Vertical Milling Machine for $175.
The spindle feed needs repair, but it's otherwise complete and functional.

So that's what they mean by having a "rainy day fund." I didn't do nearly as well killing the afternoon at the mall (did get a pen with my name on it at the dollar store, though.) That is a decent amount of suckage right there.

Is there a benefit to an individual to having either or both of these you've bought vs a 'normal' mill?

I can see in a production shop it's probably beneficial to do twice the work or at least not have to adjust away from the previous cut to set up another.

If you have a big-*** mill, (vertical or horizontal) then it's capable of doing more or less whatever you need. On the smaller machines, specialization definitely helps. I have a fairly small Clausing vertical mill and while it's quite accurate, it's not great at removing large amounts of material. I also have a little Atlas horizontal mill, which despite it's diminutive stature, can hog off a surprising amount of metal and leaves a great finish. You can drill and bore on a horizontal machine, but those jobs are usually much easier on a vertical mill.

These Hamilton machines are tiny, so they're well suited to model making and the like.

I follow. Except the part where these machines are tiny. They look like floor units unless I'm missing some perspective and they're benchtops?

I get it if they are small relative to other mills. Or that their max die size/work size is relatively small.

They're definitely benchtop models.

The tables on those milling machines are only 3x14"
The horizontal mill stands less than 2 feet tall.

It was reported today that in Monroe, NY a very low pressure system has stalled creating a large vortex and residents should be warned that major suckage has been reported so hide your tools and run for the hills, because the op is on the prowl...:thumbup:

I've been getting a good laugh going through some of the tooling. I suspect that the previous owner must have been an auction junkie like me. Some of the tooling that he had was positively massive compared to the machines he owned. A few of the milling cutters are practically as heavy as the mill and I doubt it would even spin them, let alone cut anything.

As for suckage... it could have been worse. I passed on a Delta Unisaw in perfect condition for $150. The guy sitting next to me bought it. I turned to him and told him "You know you stole that, right?" He said his heart was still pounding and he was prepared to pay $600 for it. I also didn't buy the Baldor 8" grinder for $60, nor did I buy the Delta thickness planer for $45. There were lots of happy new tool owners on Saturday besides just me.

Definitely feel the suckage vibrations in Staten Island, nice stuff
Only time I gotten a good score, bad weather along with Jewish holidays. Seems you hit a Jewish holiday along with the weather factor.
Been a while since I have been in Monroe, was contracting at Beaver Lake and Liberty many moons ago.
