Since it's a colloquialism, does it really matter?

Out of curiosity though, I looked it up in the OED. It was acceptable use during 17th-19th centuries. I'd be curious to know when the phrase first came in use in America. It could have been in use then, and if so, considered to day to be historically accurate.
