Been considering this box, looks to be in good condition cosmetically.
Standard 36 inch roll cab with a side hack and mid stack as addtl goodies.

What do you guys think it's worth? The guy is asking $950

Thanks in advance for your expertise and insight.

$950? Ha! No ******* way. At most I'd pay $300 if it was built well but that's just my opinion.

Beat him down on price or skip.

I did see a very nice Craftsman INDUSTRIAL toolbox at the Sears Outlet. The 52" model was around $600 or $700 and the 44" was around $300 or $400 from what I remember. Those were nice boxes. I'd recommend you shop around SearsOutlet stores and see what you might find. Every month they have a weekend that is extra 10% off everything.

There's no love on the Journal for Craftsman professional boxes. :wtf:

It's actually a Craftsman version of the old Waterloo Magnum series. They have nice roller slides, and a very strong roll cage construction. If I remember it's about 21 inches deep. The middle drawer section makes for a tall unit.

The set looks almost new in the photo. New 2001 catalog prices were $1250 for the base rollaway, $999 for the top chest, $540 for the end cab, and $370 for the middle drawer unit for a total $3159 list. Keep in mind this set is probably 10-14 years old, it's US made, and well built.

The $950 is reasonable if the seller has the keys to all units, it looks as good in person as in the photos, everything works ok, and you like it.

Being the cheap ******* that I am, I'd start at $750 and move up. I had that set minus the middle drawer unit many years ago when I started turning wrenches professionally. It was a well made unit and built before waterloo moved to Mexico and sold before the invasion of cheap Chinese units arrived.

Basically a Cornwell box too. These are truck quality boxes. 950 is high on the used market but I would pay 700 for it.

That's not at all the common Craftsman homeowner boxes so many people loath. It's actually built pretty well and with all 4 pieces it's a good deal at around $7-800ish if it suits your needs.

Truck brands as an alternative????....$950 would get you a tool cart.

I wouldn't take that box if you gave it to me.

I have a similar box built in 1997 that is an Industrial Series. Identical in dimension and design and it's a very stout cab with 18 g drawers and 16/14 gauge body. Drawer slides are rated at 200-300 lbs.

Thanks again to all that replied. The box does have the keys, but changing a 5/8" cam lock is easy, so it wasn't too big of an issue if it didn't have the keys.

Really, The guy did take care of it and is the original owner. I guess it couldn't hurt to come in low and see how it goes. Worst he could say is no.

Interesting. Craftsman makes industrial chests and roll cabs just like their standard series. The range of design is std duty, heavy duty, 3000 series, 5000 series, 7000 series, 9000 series. They are all labeled industrial, so if those really were a 7000-9000 series, I'd have bought those in a heartbeat.

The combo in the first post is a 7000 series unit.

Rather than the "add on" middle unit that makes the combo too tall, and the "add on" side box that can unbalance the total load; I would prefer a larger, "normal" two piece combo, or a larger and more stable single bottom box...

Notice which end that guy has placed the swivel casters? whew :scared:

I had that same setup minus the side locker before I got a Mac box. I put it up for 700 and got 400 after trying to sell it for a 6 weeks.they are decent boxes. Most people around here would rather buya hf 44 top and bottom vs that setup. I guess I can't blame them

Correction: Waterloo moved SOME units to Mexico, and others are made in the USA. Depends on the model #.

I believe the price for this is high, but that's me. I don't pay that kind of money for a toolbox, I put it towards what's inside. There are plenty of good used boxes out there (including wider Craftsmans) for less money.

All you'd have to do is get the code off the lock and either go on Ebay, to locksmith or call up Waterloo and give them that code. They'll get you a set of keys for it. The codes on the locks are typically four digit number codes.

No need to change the lock per se.

About a year or so ago, I answered a "house of hoaders" type ad in the newspaper. The house belonged to an older guy (who passed away) and he used to go to Sears, buy tools and then put them in his garage. He just liked to collect and buy them.

I went to the house (which was a nice home) and the garage was a mess. His relatives were going through everything, and some of the tools were still in the Sears white bags you get when you buy them.

I went through what I wanted and wound up with a large Macy's style shopping bag (the type with the rope handles) filled to the brim for $75. All new Craftsman (some very slightly used), all USA made. He had a new upper and lower chest/roller combination like this but the daughter in law figured, "it's worth about $1,000". She was going to actually see about returning it to Sears.

When I went back for round 2, they said, "Oh some mechanic came and bought everything, sorry".

I think I spooked 'em when I brought my Sears catalogs with me and was showing them what it went for new....but I got a great deal on what I bought...I added up what was still available and just that alone came out to over $300 ;).

I bought the same top and bottom units for about $700 roughly five years ago. Not sure how long they produced this type/model. I think the top and bottom together retailed for $1800-$2000 based on the older Crafstman catalogs I had when I bought mine used.

It has been a good box for my light to medium duty use, FWIW.

Yes, a valid alternative
That box is used so I am suggesting a used truck brans for that money.

I bought my mac tech1000 just a couple years old for $700 and have commonly seen them in the $1000-$1200 range

The older 33" wide snap on boxes ( which that box is very similar to) have dropped in price a bunch over the years because most people don't want that tall configurations unless they are a homeowner

Yea, as Rstaner said.. at the $1K level lots of nice, more modern (low and wide) truck brand boxes open up. I guess you could say it is fair for condition/size/number of boxes, but the problem is the market competition at that point is pretty high. Depends on your storage needs, current setup and local market.

I would really like to get a long roll cab, but I don't have a good location in my garage for one. So the only option is up.

Since that's not the regular run of the mill cheap craftsman box, it's worth it. But like others said at that price range you can get other brand's toolboxes. But honestly for that price if it was a box in nice shape it and a truck brand in that price then more than likely it'd be something similar to just the bottom box.
Also bear in mind craftsman is currently having a big sale on boxes.

I have had the wider version of that box for 10 years or so and love it, drawers still open and close like new. Was the box I used when I worked at a bodyshop and is now my home box since my job now supplies all my tools.

I'd go with the Craftsman red/gray ball bearing (or even compound slide) that were the same width or wider than this one. They are more common and can be had for less money.

Either its regional or people don't know what they're talking about but the only truck boxes in my area for less than 1k, which is a pretty good population sample, are going to be either/or beat to hell, decades old with friction slides, and at largest something like a heritage double bay roll cab which is considerably less storage room.

My feeling is this thread is full of "It says Craftsman, lets **** on it"

If I needed a tool box i'd be all over that. Its CLEAN, at least picture wise, and built well. Its obvious it saw light use or someone really took care of it. I think $750 would be a very nice buy. Of course you can measure that in HF dollars and get like 2 boxes and 2 carts or something like that.

I had the top and bottom box and wish I had it back. Mine was very well built, solid and was CLOSE to truck quality. Quiet, smooth drawers that did not move after they were opened, closed or half way out. The lid ( i guess? ) had to be opened the entire way and had to be closed the entire way and would stay at half open if you left it there. I will tell you that I am 6'3" and it was a tippy toe stretch to grab the lid when open and that was without the middle box.

Well, the guy that had the original tool box must be a lurker on here, the listing was taken down before I had a chance to call him yet was listed for over three weeks before..

But, found another box that is a bit less, but comes with a bit less:

This guy is asking $650 which I think is about $300 too high based on what I see in the picture and how he takes care of his tools...
