Based on a great suggestion from coralnut, I am creating this thread in hopes of keeping any spreadsheet discussion and clutter out of the HD Clearance Thread.

For those who don't know, mswol767 and I have created a Google Sheets spreadsheet used to track prices of HD clearance items. As I write this, we have approximately 110 people who have edit rights to the sheet.

The sheet is broken up into separate sheets based on categories, i.e. Bath, Electrical, Plumbing etc. Within each of those sheets, items are again categorized further, i.e. Faucets, Toilets, Water Heaters, etc. The columns of the sheets provide the information for a particular item, i.e. SKU, Description, Current Price, City, State, Date Logged, etc. The goal is to have users input their findings so we can help each other find deals. Right now the sheet is the best we can do, but Mike is looking into the possibility of some sort of website which would be easier to navigate.

For those of you contributing to the sheet, I suggest using the Sheets app while in store to help you search items in the Price Check App. I also suggest taking notes of new items you find and refraining from updating the spreadsheet until you have access to a computer as updating it through the app is quite cumbersome.

I hope this thread can be used for users to communicate their opinion of the sheet and to provide any feedback for future upgrades and/or modifications.

If you have any questions/comments please feel free to let us know.

Thanks for doing this.. haven't come across anything in my recent trips to add but I would love to know from HD how they determine clearance items in different regions

Is there any way to organize this by state?

I think we'd be doing a disservice to organize this by state. You could easily overlook something just because someone in your state didn't update the spreadsheet.

This. On the computer you can organize by state, just not in the app.

Hmm just realized you can open Google Sheets online on the computer.. thought you had to install something (or get the windows 8.1 app).

Guess now I'll be able to put all of my stuff on the sheet at work. I only go on my laptop at home like once a month.

What do you think I have been doing :D

That's why none of my stuff gets updated, or the spreadsheet worked on till Monday

Come to think of it, if you really wanted to, you could open it on the computer in HD as well and sort/filter to your hearts content.

I guess I misunderstand the spreadsheet then. Are these HD clearances supposed to be nationwide? Because I rarely see any of the stuff posted on the HD clearance sale at my local HDs. The only ones I do see are when someone in Southern California posts them.

So since you are in California, it makes sense that you would see the stuff posted form others in Cali.

For the most part, HD clearances the same items nationwide with some exceptions. Some items may be region/store specific, but what really varies is when the go on clearance, markdown schedule, etc.

Just because you don't see any of say the East Coast items now, doesn't mean that you won't next week, or a month from now. Or, on the other hand, maybe they have already gone by and were on clearance last month.

It appears the spreadsheet requests have died down, we are currently at 117 members. Keep updating with your findings!!

Wouldn't the app price changes (computer) be a system update? Or do managers have to manually download the update?

Machine spits out the yellow tags Monday am. Employees then scan them with the hand held to update system. Usually they go dept by dept. So they may update garden first thing Monday and not get to hardware until Tuesday. Depends on the store.

So say an item is going to be dropping penny today. The yellow tag would print, then the attendant would scan it to determine inventory. If inventory is 0 or they can't find it, the delete the SKU of sorts and it drops off the system?

So if the attendant doesn't scan the tag, the item won't drop off the system or become a penny?

This seems contradictory to what else I have heard. I had heard/thought that the computer system updated automatically and that the tags had to be printed manually. You are basically saying the opposite.

Pretty much. That's how my guy on the inside explained it to me.

I have encountered some regular price tags with a thin yellow strip of tape on them. Looks like a piece of the yellow clearance sticker tape.

Would there be any reason for them to "tag" an item before they create a clearance sticker to put on it?

Also, do we know if these clearance items/pricing are coming from corp and if so, why are there price discrepancies? Maybe its regional corp making these decisions?

Interesting...

I wonder if items with qty 1 basically just get assumed that inventory is wrong and almost get deleted blindly.

It's weird. Some stuff stays in the computer that the store never even stocked.

Believe that the small yellow tape is evidence that the item or items have been included in the recent inventory. Started seeing more and more of them at the stores that have been going through the cleaning/inventory process. Seen no evidence that these items are being clearanced once the tape is applied, nor have I seen the same items taped at the various stores I visit........

And some stuff shows .01 instead of dropping all together.

I was having an issue with sorting by date on the tools sheet today. I reformatted the column and it appears to be working now. I also did the other sheets. When inputting the "date logged", just put mm-dd-yy, and it will format to show "day of week, mm-dd-yy". The issue was that a bunch of the fields were just text and not actual dates, therefore the sorting wasn't working properly. The other various date columns can just use an mm/dd/yy format.
