Thank you all for the comments :)

At times Gumtree shows up with good deals. This was just 1/2 mile away from me too. Both the vices and clamps have hardly been used. The seller was a hipster who wanted to get rid of this "clutter" :spit:

I think I'm at 5, soon to be 7 (or more depending how many I smuggle cross border)
I think my dad's at 4. We would both be a bit more if woodworking vises count

Thanks for the comments !!

Did anyone admit to the Over 100 in the "vise pole" yet ?

Shiftless started a Poll on how many vises do you have. Here is the link. www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307020&page=1

One person selected over 100 vises and everyone is curious who is it. My guess is BigCaddy.

The count is now up to 3...

And thanks Get, KM and CRS

I wondered too about that anthropological anomaly.

In order to gather some data on the problem, I posted the question "how many vises do you own" and included a poll. (BTW, my number is 10)

In case you didn't notice it yesterday, here is a link. Some interesting results.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307020

Guys:
I know this thread moves fast, but I did mention it here a couple of days ago.
The poll has created way more interest than I expected. Thanks to all who participated. Nobody PMed me or anything with secrets. Maybe confessions are forthcoming.
The number of members with more than 20 vises has stayed about even with the number of members with fewer than 2.

(My number is 10)

Athol 4 inch jaws
Prentiss 4",3",2 inch clamp on
Wilton 3 inch bullet, 4 inch bullet, 4 inch mechanics' 1644
Rock Island 3 inch
Columbian. 5 1/2 inch
Unmarked blue suction mount rotating 2 sets of jaws (hardly worth mentioning)

Nope, wasn't me.---Probably BIG.---I have 4 big piles of vises, 3 piles in my shop, one's 3' high and rising, and right many more stuffed in the corners of 3 storage buildings.---But I wouldn't even venture a guess as to how many because I just don't have the oomph to go through and count them all and I don't want to have to come back later and say, "I lied", don't really have that many.---Plus I don't know what the criteria is.---Does a Diston saw vise count, do table vises count. or is it just bench vises.

My wife keeps saying "just how many vises do you need and how many can you use at one time.---Answer to the second question, one, actually two if you had them lined up holding the same piece of metal.---Answer to the first question, as many as I can get my hands on that are to my liking.---I don't know why she don't get me.---But then she will turn right around a go with me to pick up one.:headscrat

Anyway, hope this thread keeps generating interest.---I like it.

But don't be surprised if some don't chime in because it would be a job for some of them to make a count.---Demo doesn't have many under 200 lbs..---If his is organized like mine, that's a lot of work just for a number.

I can have as many vises as my wife can have shoes. That's my logic. Haha. It's just that I keep my vises more organized so it doesn't seem like I have that many.

Just realized I forgot post vises and a couple other machinist vises.... That makes 7 (soon 9) for me, and 7 for my dad...
Do mill/drill press and saw sharpening vises count ? That brings my dad to 16, and me to 9....

Well after revisiting the thread, I see Shiftless pretty well covered the criteria parameters.---I guess hand saw vise would be considered a vise.---Anyway, I'm going to include it in my count when and if.---It was my Dads Diston.---Pretty special.

Good poll Shift.

A semi famous tractor collector and expert on the
science of collecting and hiding the fact, once made a list of things
All husbands should know. It included the advice the you should name them
Not number them. You should collect all the same brand( thereby confusing the issue
With them all being the same color). And that violating these rules made it
Easier to collect what lawyers call " evidence".
Just putting it out there!!
Credit or blame goes to Roger Welsch from " Tractors and men who love them " and " Rusty tractors Busted knuckles". And assorted other writing by this genius of our times.

I was second in line to buy this one this morning. (same one Alex just mentioned)
Second in line means nothing when the deal is this good. Who in their right mind would see the ad, drive over to see it and then PASS for such a you **** price?

Did you of you GJ guys snag it ahead of me and Alex?

Who here want to guess on model number? I'd say it has to be a 519x

I just spotted a Parker 975 out here, but so far they offered it to me at $200 with some room for negotiation. About how much would you pay for it in this condition with stand?

I'd probably pay 150. But I'm partial to Parkers. I paid $300 for both my Parker 975 and a Columbian 607. I paid $125 for a Parker 955. That one looks clean other than some rust from the pictures. I would go see it.

P that's a hard question. I don't know your finances or what you plan to do with the vise. If you knew you were going to keep it and use it I'd say get over there and look it over and do it soonest. If there aren't any issues with condition beyond the rust start dickering. If you were going to resell it then the deal could be dicier. Check out the recent posts where guys a lamenting the fact that they didn't get there soon enough. You decide, though.

EDIT: Just saw Bagged's response. $150 would probably be about my limit too, but....

From the pics, it looks just rusty, but overall good condition. Jaws look nice, no sign of cracks, welds, or beatings...from the pics anyway. As a keeper, even at $200 with that stand included, you aren't doing too bad. If you can get it for $150 or less, you would being doing great.

Got my 6" Morgan back from my buddy. Repair looks good in my book. Ordered new jaw inserts from Morgan today, $85 for the pair. Going to make a pedestal for it. Before and after pictures.

Not a u joint, trying to remove the piston nut on a JCB telehandler tilt cylinder. Rod clamped in the vise. With a 15 to 1 torque multipler, a 3' 3/4" ratchet on that, nut cherry red and the vise gave before the nut. Pretty good for a nut with a 350 ft lbs torque spec. Tilt cylinder went in scrap and I took the broken vise home.

So I offered $130, and they countered at $150. :) Which is good because they listed it originally at $250. Now I just need to schedule time to go get it.

P: Well alright! A Parker and a stand. Listen, I know you're still recovering and I'd like to help you out. Why don't you send it up here and I'll take care of it for you? Just until you're back on your feet, you understand.

Hey Bagged, I just tried to send you a PM with a prospect for you. Let me know if you go for it.
