A guy has had this on my local CL for a few days. Has it priced around $350.

It has 3 1/2" jaws. And apparently the orange is NOT rust.

Is it worth that?

Mike: while it is a great vise its not big enough to get that kind of money in that condition. Can you go in your gj profile and put in your location and maybe one of us can either sell you you a nicer vise or help you find one.

Good luck

If the orange is NOT rust, then that is an AMAZING faux rust paint job, because it has me totally fooled.

:) Actually, I've got some experience with faux rusting.
In model trains and boats, I've used scrapings from real rust mixed in and applied to paint to new trains to improve their realism.

For a short time I had a bicycle that I wanted to use for commuting (and not have to worry about the quality of the lock I put on it). It was a pretty nice Bianchi frame with Campy components, and a chromed fork, but wasn't anything super special (started as a cheap garage sale find). Still, once I got done with it, the only reason you'd take a second look at it was to ponder who'd ride such a piece of ****. Even the aluminum components were "rusting". LOL.

That first one is a Wilton Combination vise, but is missing the pipe jaws. That is a GREAT vise, though he's asking above top dollar for something so beaten.
The second one, not so much.

Back to the OP's vise, it's missing the original lever nuts on the swivel. Still, it's a pretty nice vise, but I'd value it at around half of the asking price.

Rlit: do they also call the process you mention BROWNING sort of like Japanning? nice story of down shining up a bike so it wouldn't get stolen.

cheers

:) I suppose that would be a good name, if it didn't already have a meaning (as a fine gun finish).

The real down shining was the lumpy brushed on plastidip on the chromed fork and chromed stay ends (and the top tube while I was at it) that matched the mud topped drippy krylon finish and electrical tape touches (with a splash of strategically placed duct tape).

I must spend too much time on the internet, because my first thought when I saw this thread title was that the ad bots had finally found out what gets the folks at Garage Journal going.

That's pretty hilarious! It seems in my area anything vintage, useful and in decent shape goes for way over what they should. Or at least the sellers ask way over reasonable prices. Who knows if they actually get the asking price...:headscrat :scared:
