Trusty-Cook, Ideas For New Hammers

We've been getting some great feedback from everybody on hammers and types of hammers you'd like to see in the future. Our new ball peen with options for head configurations should be out in early 2016. We're stoked about bringing this model to market.

We've tossed around the idea of making a dual purpose dead blow sledge hammer: a sledge with a steel head on one side and a urethane head on the other side. Thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea? Won't know until you see one?

We always look forward to feedback.

Thanks!

Aw man! I already bought your shiny new model 7 and 12. Guess I'm gonna have to shell out even more for the dual head :D

That being said, I think dual head sounds like a great idea. Just a couple minor issues I could foreseen with that is one head being heavier than the other end (out of balance) but who know, maybe it won't be that noticeable? The other one is if you use the soft face heavily and the urethane end get worn out, then you don't have other end to switch over to.

So perhaps introduce three different sledgehammers in your lineup? One with soft face on both ends, second with one soft face and one hard face, and third with hard face on both ends.

I was wondering the same thing. Balance is oh so important to keep it striking square.

Also, will the steel face be the same diameter as the urethane face? It might be better if it was as big as the urethane face (unlike what I've seen in most steel faced deadblow hammers). You don't want to leave an exposed shoulder (on the urethane OR on the steel) that can snag if you miss.

Dual face sledge sounds like a cool idea. Me personally I'd prefer separate soft face and solid sledges but Theres people out there who have different needs than me. It'd be a good offering.

What I'd like to see is an expansion on the core hammer models like:
lighter head weight ball peens (4oz, 8oz ect.)
A 48oz head weight ball peen.
16, 24 and 32 oz brass hammers
A dual face hand drilling hammer
An Engineers hammer (better known as a little BFH)
Maybe a cross peen hammer.
Dare I say Trusty rip claw and framing hammers :willy_nil
All would be perfect with Trusty Cook's dead blow polyurethane architecture.

Maybe a cross peen hammer.

Harbor Freight of all places sold a Pittsburgh branded cross peen dead blow several years back (in their nice non-marking orange), but then discontinued it.

I really like the hammer, but since it's no longer made, the lifetime warranty is kinda worthless, so I baby it. I'd expect that the small striking faces relative to the weight will not stand up to abuse (especially the corners).

I do a little gun work every now and then and would like to see some smaller sized deadblow ball peen hammers.

I'd be interested in brass faced as well. Also, seeing as TC did a blue and green run of hammers, wondering if there's any chance in some orange ones at some point?

My most / almost only used hammer is a heavy cross peen. If I could get a deadblow version that wouldn't chew up a steering knuckle but could still free up a seized pinch joint I'd be happy. Actually, what would be really cool would be a half coated heavy cross peen. Flat face has a protective urethane coating, but the narrow side was metal for striking.

I'm no professional though so this might be a stupid idea. For whatever reason I just really like cross peens.

Trusty....

I have the big dead blow soft faced hammer 11.5lbs, 37" long. Armstrong/Stanley etc...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016SJDOE/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I use it to manipulate big stuff into place (tractor parts etc), but I would LOVE if you could brass one side, because sometimes I am hitting sharp/pointy parts that cut up the soft face.

In the first picture I have a Snap-on dead blow from about 1982 (it might be one you guys made ?) it is a 32oz dead blow and that handle is fantastic I love that grip.

The black hammer is a wilton that uses two steel rods that run the entire length for added durability making it indestructible.

So combine that old handle shape and design make it indestructible and make the head with brass or any other metal and you will have a killer new design; oh and make the handle into other colors for people that are into that kind of thing as for me I like red.

Man do I love hammers...:rocker:

I will second most of this list, especially the small ball peen hammers!

I checked your site recently before buying a Nupla hammer with a metal face on one side. I would have bought it from you guys if you had one.

I would like to see a straight piston hammer, with the handle in line with the head, possibly dead blow as well.

Id easily buy a light weight hammer from ya.

I keep a cheap hammer i bought from the local grocery store that has a rubber side and a hard plastic side. Its my "gunsmithing" hammer right now. Something around 4-8 ounces with one side brass and one side just the polyurethane. Would be perfect.

I would also like to see some lighter weight ball peens 4oz or 8oz and also small brass faced for the occasional gun work.

 I also would like to see an 8oz ball peen.

I would also like to see like a 48 oz dual face hammer.

I'd also like one of those short handled ball peens.

Let's be honest, if you make new types of hammers, I'll probably buy them. :dunno:

perhaps make a poll of the types and handle options so, we could vote for our favorites

Dual face sledge. Yes. And a dual faced stubby handle would be sweet. I have 2 hammers on my cart at all times, a tc 32oz dead blow and a little short handle 40 oz engineer sledge. Combining those and only having one would be sweet.

Even sweeter in pink. Green would work. But pink would be a must have.

I could see a dead blow sledge with one side soft and other side metal, if it can be balanced and tough enough to withstand the hits on the metal side. Most of the other suggestions, HA! Remember, they deal with dead blows only. They have no reason to dive into the non dead blow as their are plenty of competition.(ahem..estwing which oddly enough use their dead blows. Lol)

Ok, I guess now a question for Trusty Cook. I know you use "shot" for the dead blow component of your hammers. My question is what kind? Steel or lead most likely, but have you looked at the physical properties of tungsten shot? I know it's much more expensive than steel or lead, but it is quite a bit heavier. More inertia per blow. For example:

Just a late night pondering.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody, and keep it coming! We're receptive to ideas. It'd be nice for us to have a couple new product offerings in 2016. Timeline for new product #1, the new ball peen, is early 2016.
