Brian: Thanks for the You ****. I didn't even know I wanted a stand. $8 convinced me though. Now, here's what I think you should do about that Cman. Take US 2 east until it ends, take I-75 north to Sault Ste. Marie, cross the International Bridge, then take the Trans-Canadian east. You'll be there in no time.

Only if I can stop off in Michigan and pick up a stand for $9 (gotta make it worth your while)

[Riley(Brian): the reason i started making multiple posts when i first started was because photo images linked to posts would take up almost an entire page and when members would hit the quote and add a well done it would take me (us) pages to find a new or old post. do what you like and i appreciate others that post that way so it's easier for me (us) to read. if i didn't do multiple posts some of the members might see my questions and comments and think it was my thread which it no way is. as with most of the threads i start they are the member's like the 101 and vise stand threads that have a lot of great posts on them.

Makes good sense - but there are some photos in this thread that are worth reposting!

As for my vice for vises - I'm happy to spare you the trips to Portland, but dangit - the supply has dried up around here. Other than the vintage cman I missed last week, and the same, 3-mo-old posts, I haven't seen a good listing in two weeks!

I'm actually considering making a trip to the Seattle area to get my fix ...

Brian

Oooooohhhh, did i just get something cool. Pics very soon!!!

And here it is: Alsop Engineering Corp, Milldale Ct. Weighs 40-50 lbs. Heavy, heavy duty clamp on swivel plate. Plate is 10x10. Rotates 360 degrees, moves from horzontal to vertical. I post it here because I'm planning to use it for a 4 or 5" vise.

Ive never seen one before. It is super heavy duty. Lockdown bolt is 2", clamp on screw is 7/8ths. Everything is rusted but 24 hours with penetrating liquid should cure that. Very little surface rust.

Anyone ever seen one before?

Brian: i'll let Balane and the other guys know you are about to cross the state lines. i had to ask permission and almost pay for a permit to get my vises in Oregon. not that that kept the guys like Sandman and Va from having them shipped to them. :D

seriously if you happen to buy quality doubles of vises you already own keep them for trading fodder and I might have something you can use or like.

cheers

Sandman: Dang no wonder i can't buy a big old vise, but good luck just the same.

NJ: i don't see a swivel jaw or antique vise in the group. good luck with that and good find with the C3.

Just bought my last vise - Wilton C3.

Purchased this hernia-maker from a retired welder. He used a front-end tractor loader to get it in the air. Third picture has small Reed vise for scale. Last picture is in the trunk of a Honda Civic.

I'm not stripping and painting this one, leaving as is - very good condition. More pictures to come.

I need a bigger bench.

***

Forgot to mention what I paid for it. For those interested, I paid $2/lb.

Probably the coolest clamp mount I've seen. I want one.

It's made for a high speed portable mixer.

That Craftsman from the Toronto horde looks more like a Rock Island.....it's a 5166, and if it come with a steel table, not a bad buy....I'm setting up a trip up to that way...... Table won't fit though :( There's a PArker 436 lurking between here and there as a consolation :bounce:

Joe: very cool. how hard do you think that will be to adjust with a 40 pound vise on it? do you just loosen and tighten the bolt or is their wing nut or something i'm missing?

Thrum: i thought it was also a Rock Island when Diag first posted it, but wasn't sure of the #. do you know the specs on a Craftsman 5166? i'm thinking it is maybe a 6 inch jaw that weighs 150 pounds similar to my Rock Island 577's.

good luck and hope it's still there when you have time to get to it

Today I graduated out of the "Nothing-Like-That-Ever-Happens-To-Me" crowd.

Parker 954, 4inch jaws. Pretty good shape after the initial brushing down. $5 :D That's a bit less than $.11 per pound for those of you keeping score at home.

IMG_1071 (Medium).jpg IMG_1072 (Medium).JPG

I was at a farm auction. The guy had been a bit of a hoarder and things were pretty disorganized. As I searched around, in the back of my mind was a little voice whispering "where's his vise, where's his vise..."

Inside the dark lower level of the barn I found it bolted to a workbench with a whole bunch of metal bits on top, open shelves of metal stock below, and pegboard above with a bunch of **** hanging. It was really messy.

Eventually they started two rings, one of them being the lower barn level. Stuff there was not organized, so they just defined spaces and sold everything in the space as a lot, sometimes offering choice first. Not that many bidders were interested in the stuff there.

When they got to the workbench spot I was just about to ask them to sell the vise separately when they offered choice of anything on the bench. I opened with $5 and no one else bid. Guess I could have gone lower!

Thanks Bagged and Joe. :)

As we all know, it does not always work out that way. I recently bought an older Athol, a 4.5 inch fixed base No. 92, at an online auction. It looked good in the photos, and I got it for $32, which made me happy. It looked fine when I picked it up and did the first cleaning as well. No cracks, operated smoothly.

Then as I stood back and looked at it from the side, I noticed the static jaw looked shorter in horizontal width than the dynamic. When I tried to tighten up the jaws they would not quite close completely.

As I looked closer I determined that the static jaw part was gone, which was interesting as they were cast in place jaws, not inserts. At some point it must have separated from the vise. Then someone had come up with the idea of removing the lower shelf so the vise could continue to be used, sort of. The old "Farmer Fix", as they say.

I have since bought a set of 4.5 inch Wliton replacement jaws and installed one of them on the static. It is not as tall as I would like, but the vise works properly. It is a user now, and I will lose a bit of money when I sell it on CL.

You can't win them all.

TJ: Did you get that big rock island swivel jaw or was price too high?

Drives : Did not ... at least yet. A reasonable price but quite a drive. I might try to widdle 'em down a bit and, if successful, it will be in my shop. Even though there is absolutely no room for it I've never seen or heard of another, so I might just have to have it!! ;)

Edit: Waited too long :( Live and learn ;)

I emailed about what model it was. No definitive ID on who made it but the lack of a garter, wrong jaw shape make me think it looks more like a Rock Island. It'll be gone in a day with a table thrown in.

It is a Littco (Littlestown Foundry) , the diamond pattern is a trademark. The basic little clamp on vise is very common and for homeowner light duty use. The thing that makes yours different is the swivel base along with the clamp on mounting. I would guess maybe 40's to 50's as a date ? As far as value someone that collects small clamp ons would pay more because of the unique swivel and clamp mount. The Littlestown brand is not as popular
as the major manufacturers to collect. It is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Hi Anndel: Welcome to the thread. I'm not an expert on vises. I only joined this thread a couple of months ago so take this with a grain of salt. I know that Yost Co. is in Michigan. Here's a link to their official site.

http://www.yostvises.com/mechanics-...-reversible-combination-vise-swivel-base.html

I think Yost is still made in the USA but I'm not certain. Someone else here will probably know or it might be on the Yost site.

As far as this particular model, the jaws are wide and the reversible jaws are a nice feature. It might suit your needs well but, from what you wrote, I assume you want a general service vise. If so, I think you could find a suitable vise on Craig's List for a lot less money. One caveat though, the CL vises with 6" jaws will probably be a bit more expensive so ask yourself if you actually need wide jaws. I've lived quite happily with a 3 1/2" jaw vise.

You should also be aware that vises can easily become an addiction so beware.

p.s. What area are you from? Do you own any vises already? If you do, we like pictures of vises so please post some. Again, welcome to the thread

Bartered a Craftsman sander for this Parker 824, 4" 85 lb vise this morning. Phenomenal original condition, right down to the tensioning spring in the handle spindle nose. This is the nicest Parker vise I've ever had in my shop. What big shoulders on this bad boy. 85 lbs!!! Working on it now. Going with polished jaws and BLO finish

View media item 54534Todays local pickup, pair of Parkinson's No 7 (4" jaws) and a clamp, I only went to get a blowtorch and one vice I had bought but I had the other better one as well. Same guy had others but they are going on eBay and he wouldn't accept an offer on the ones I would have wanted unless it was a big offer.
I have 3 Parkinson's No7 now but the one in front is by far the nicest.

Very nice Dutch'. :) IMO, you now have a trio of what I'd class as pretty much the perfect, (no pun intended :D), make & model of bench vice. Out of every one here, the No.7 still holds the soft spot.

My Bench in the garage has a No7 on it, it was the really tired one i had, but now its the best of that pair as I swapped them this afternoon, although at some point I will give it a proper cleaning. Parkinson's are my favourite of the British makers.

If you're owt like me, that'll happen about 20 years down the road. :D

Same here. Absolutely nowt wrong with the likes of old Record, Woden, Paramo, Fortis etc., but Parkinson's still have that little something about them over the others, for me.
