Just on a side note with that Joe, you want to try and apply that slightly thinner than you're currently doing. You'll get a better finish. There was some slight drooping inbetween the blocks of lettering on that last one you did, (it's the parts where the blue seems slightly darker than the rest), and I noticed some pockmarking on one of your earlier vices. Applying thinner coats should prevent those occuring. The old Hammerite was a cow to use at the best of times. The new stuff is even worse.

The first coat will usually look a bag of **** when freshly applied. Leave it overnight though, and it'll look quite different. Some people tend to see the initial result after applying and try whacking a bit more on, or use thicker coats. That's when the problems usually start. Thin coats and leave it for the specified time before recoating, else you'll also have a tendency to drag/lift the previous coat(s) off.[/QUOTE]

Fretters, believe it or not i want it to flow and sometimes the price is some pooling and dripping. Some people HATE it. Some people LOVE it. I like the patterns and swirls. Thats why when I sell my vises I do those close ups, so there are no surprises when they get it.

I could get it perfect but the hippie in me likes the swirls dude! :rocker:

Beautiful vise and photographs......It's apparent you shoot with Canon cameras...

Um...if thats who made the lens in my cellphone. I'd kill for a real good digital camera but the features i'd want cost $$$. So for now I have to settle

I just learned that a 3-1/2" Parker swivel base is in fact smaller than the base on the 4" and larger than a 3" base. I have never had a 3.5" Parker swivel so I never new.

All I can say is I would not use a stock inner ring when I restored my 600S. The reason was it is cast way to thin walled, to be honest I was not happy with the thin wall outer ring either but I did not want to make one of those. This 600 I bought in Wyoming did not have a original base and Autopts was kind enough to send me the outer base and inner ring which broke very easy. You really do not have a choice in the matter since you are stuck with what Wilton gives you unless you have access to a metal cutting machine and ambition to make your own.
Thank you for the input kind sir - you are, indeed, a gentleman and a scholar.

Beautiful work Hemi:beer:

BTW, on that model, are both jaws labeled 9400?
My 4 inch problem bullet (Chicago Guar Exp 1962) has one jaw labeled 9400 and the other 8400. I'm wondering if this is really unusual.

No idea, but I love the stand too! I think it's worth the price even if home-made ...

I believe that's a standard issue 2 step wooden stepladder. Old school to be sure!

That is a really good deal on the Prentiss 22. Swivelling back jaw...30 bucks!
Copper jaw covers
Anybody who wants to add that one to their collection better hurry. ;)

Not homemade, old machine stand or the like. That looks to have a large weld repair on the left hand side of the vise. While properly done it looked significant.

Im with you 100% Z. Those vise/anvil combinations never ends well, sort of like hiring a super model as an au pair. Sounds like a good idea but in practice. ....

I got this Parker 974 a couple weeks ago.....It was used in an old Wurlitzer factory in Western NY......The Wilton C1 was acquired yesterday.....It is pretty scruffy but I think it will look sharp after rehab.....

Hemi,

Please post up some pics when you clean this one up. I saw it at auction on Saturday and I thought it was in decent nick. One thing I found odd - I removed the dynamic jaw and the nut was flopping around inside the body. It clamps well and the action is smooth so no problems. Just curious what's going on inside there.

That stand on the Louisville CL add almost looks like a pedestal bathroom sink stand minus the porcelain.

Which might not be a bad idea for those of you with one sitting around in the back of the shop/barn?

Mr P: I finally found one that was fairly cheap. Hey! Hold on a minute. It’s only Wednesday! I must have been impatient this week.

Edit: Sorry, wrong second picture.

Your Wednesday find made me check the listings for upcoming sales. One which is suppose to take place Friday and Saturday has tools, and a contact number, so I will find out within the next few minutes which tools and how much. :D

Friend P:
I saw a vise in one picture for this sale and not much else interesting. Had to wait in line for 45 minutes and sure enough the vise was the only thing of interest. Started talking to a young guy and it turns out he needed a vise to set up his shop but he wanted one a little bigger. Long story short, I sold him my ugly Milwaukee Tools vise for twice what I paid for the Scout. Good day so far!

Good job CRS. Not really reducing the inventory there are you?

I guess you’re Staying true to your answer#3 from Post #36539

For those who don’t remember……Johnny’s solution to a problem Essay…. “3. Sell both of the vises and use the money to buy more vises.”

Actually I have been using one of those for over 20 years as a vise stand!

Bluebolt to you have a picture of how you are using it? I actually have a sink just like that in the garage I was about to scrap... Might have found a better use for it

Pedestal sink bases: Careful with that. Some of the old old bases were probably porcelain enamel over cast iron like bathtubs. Newer ones are just porcelain and I think they would be too brittle to use as a vise stand.

Bluebolt: It looks like the one you have been using is very old. It could have come out of my grandfather's barbershop.

I knew that Pedestal "lightbulb-on" idea couldn't have been the first time someone thought about it. Great job bluebolt :rocker:

CRS, No vises at said sale I inquired about, but I did stop by as it was only 15 minutes away, and got "first dibs" at what was suppose to sell on Friday/Saturday. I will post my finds on the garage sale thread.

Mark Garrett: Hi Mark, welcome to the vise thread. Please post more pictures when you have time. Look back to page 1873 to HCNDM's post # 37455. He has pictures of a Stahl Titan vice that looks very similar to your Fortis. Look closely at how the jaw pads are attached to the jaws - screwed or bolted on from behind. It's very distinctive. There are differences between the two vices though. Is that a quick release mechanism at the bottom? Do you have any information about Fortis? It is new to me. The more I look at the picture the more impressed I am. Anyway, welcome and keep posting.

That's a nice Fortis Mark. :) Good condition by the looks of it too.

That method of attaching the jaw inserts is quite common across here on the larger, heavier duty vices CRS. The general use vices are likely to be screwed inserts as a rule, but the big boys or beaters usually have the bolt through jaws. Fortis was the brand of one of the Herbert's, as I recall. Can't remember offhand whether it was Alfred or Edward, but I believe it was the former.
