So here are pics of my Gripon vise disassembled. Pretty good desing but would never work on a big vise. Thought I'd share because you may never see another one.

Guess who is getting this one from the GJ board? 100 pts to whomever can guess correctly!

Thanks guys.

I ended buying one on ebay anyway. Took a gamble but i believe this is a USA made Walton 745 6" that was not label on ebay. When i first saw it thought i would get it cheap since it wasnt label but price got ran up to $145. Guess i will find out when it gets here next week.

Looks like your taste in vices is sliding over to the larger side. :D That's a nice one Dutch'. :) Condition looks good. They're a fair old size the 8A, aren't they.

I have always liked the bigger ones but they are not so easy to find and take up a lot more room than the little ones. 8A is pretty large, basically the same size and weight as my Record 114 with its 8" jaws and slightly larger opening capacity. This one is decent, has some wear in it but it hasn't seen a hammer much as its not missing any corners, jaw inserts are ok as well. Casting quality is not the best, the end if the slide is well out of square and there is a good bit of misalignment in the two halves of the mold as well. It just needs a clean, paint or BLO, oil and a stand and it will be ready for work.
I do want to find a 9A now though.

I'm curious about that also. I've been using a 4" Parker 974 for ages and it's always been up to the job, unless it simply won't open wide enough. (Rare, but that is why I want a pattern makers vise...)

Of course, If I get the base sorted out for the Parker 386... :bounce:

What I always wanted (but never had and don't have the space for) is an 8 to 10' bench with a pair of identical vises, one at each end for those times I want to clamp a long piece. Probably a better way is one on the bench and one on a stand at the same height...

Truck axles, suspension, etc. it's not that a 4" doesn't open wide enough or is deep enough, it just didn't have the clamping surface area I was looking for.

I have dual Morgan 150s speced out for your exact set up. One a Chicago and one a Milwaukee. Once I have a real shop I'll probably get a section of bowling alley and use that. I like wood tops anyways. Suppose I can always source that in the mean time too :D

Dutch: that is one on my list and still haven't seen one in person. nice find AGAIN.

USC: yesterday you were asking about a $35 vise and now you bought a $145 maybe plus shipping for a Wilton that has some issues. hopefully the missing small piece under the dynamic's jaw doesn't have a crack extending from it too. it also isn't a Wilton's top of the line bullet's or a tradesman. it should work fine as a vise though if there isn't any other issues.

JOE: maybe some food for the chain gang?

Fretters: :D

Thanks, i hope you do find a Parkinson someday as they are just lovely, they are not rare over here but they are by no means common.

Yeah it was a gamble. I saw the same issues with it. Honestly it why i thought i get it cheap and it was not even label wilton.

i really dont mind spending the money. I been looking since i moved for a good vise and what i posted was the best i could find locally within 2 hours drive. Im in charleston sc btw.

If this one junk most likely clean it up and sell it on CL once i can find good usa made vise locally. Plus it seem like a fun project to restore an old vise and a test run if i do run across a good rusted old vise.

Dutch: thanks for the well wishes and since i'm fairly close to Canada maybe one will show up either up there or make it's way down here across the border. or if you want to bring one over in a suitcase i can substitute with some big old US iron to send you home with.

JRobb: another option i mentioned to Jeremy a year or so ago when he wanted butcher block for his metal cabinets was to get some 3 or 4 inch thick old growth lumber. here's a bench Jeremy made and he has more pictures in his Hodgepodge thread in garage gallery if you want to make one.

USC: you might want to put your location in your GJ profile and it might help in the long run or put an area like i do since i travel in a 3 or 4 state area. you probably did ok and wishing you the best. i thought you were a Trojan fan like in Los Angeles, California USC.

Hello,

Just had to post what i picked up today.

Been here for a while but didn't want to post too much as life's circumstances prevented me from that.

I have been wanting one of these for a while but didn't expect this to be my first craftsman!

That's one of the vises that was thought to be a Unicorn. Congratulations. I think this is only number 4 or 5 that have been found by members so far. No matter what you paid, you earned a You **** award. Oldie will be jealous. Hell, I'm jealous.

I've obviously been on this board too long. I could tell that was a 5198 before even logging in and being able to see the photo's. :D

Since I have 3 No7's I was going to do that when we get round to building our new workshop, with the third on a heavy wheel stand at the same height.

Make sure to post photo's of that setup if you do. Three No.7's insitu would be an impressive shot.

Hopefully you'll drop on one someday, as Dutch' said. :) I'd also be intrigued as to your opinion as to how someone from your side of the pond classes them, in comparison to some of your vices of similar size. Would they hit the sweet spot or not. :D

Nice find Alpha!

In other news, I got Kevin's jewelry fitted to the Prentiss 98 today ... two Alumbronze thrust bearings and a non-crown collar. Might not look like much but: (a) had quite a few "this could go terribly wrong" moments and (b) had to lift that 130lb slide about 20 times. My nerves and arms are shot!!

Just need to level up the new jaws and this beast will finally be done :)

Do you know what you've found?!?!?!?!?! That is the fourth 5198 know to exist according to members on this forum who have been looking for years. Wow!

You are going to have to share more information, like where you found it, any history, etc... Nice find.

Thanks everybody!

Been collecting them since I was looking for a good old vise a few years ago.

You guys didn't make it easy for me to stop at just one, so now I have a collection.

I found this one on CL a few days ago and just managed to get it today.

I was expecting to see a 5197 but when I got there and saw the 5198 the grin was hard to hold back. Paid the man and loaded it in. As i drove away the excitement set in and was grinning from ear to ear.

Any how, I now have more vises than I can use but can"t justify getting ride of any of them.

By the way the date on the slide is stamped: 2 55 11

Does anybody know the production dates (from when to when) for the Craftsman 51xx series?

YES, i know what I found!

I've been reading this post for a while now.

Did not think I would ever find this one. I was looking for one of the 51xx series and just happened to be the 5198.

Pittsburgh area,

It came from a family that has had it since new, from uncle to nephew and he was selling off the tools he didn't need/want. As far as i could get out of him, most of it is gone now. He had a lot of old craftsman tools and what is left is just a few sockets and some other old hand tools.

Anything else?

Excellent find. I've had a couple 95's a 96 and a 97. Haven't landed the 98. As far as the dates go.... I think the 50's maybe the late 40's . Haven't seen of heard of any from the 60's

Nice restore. I'm going to order new jaws for my American scale from Kevin, unless I end up selling it unrestored.

Nice find Alpha, that makes two of the four known 5198's were found and live in the Pgh. area. Mine is stamped 3-54 and came from New Kensington.

Does anyone have an online source for phillips drive, fillister head 5/16"-18 X 3/4" cap screws?......for Wilton bullets......From what I can see even the mighty McMaster Carr doesn't carry them.....
Thanks,
