Stair treads

I'm looking to get some vinyl stair treads for my painted wooden stairs that go from the garage into the house. They recommend an adhesive that runs about $30/quart to stick them down with. I have 12 steps to do, not sure how much i'd need. Is there anything else I can use? Some kind of construction adhesive perhaps?

So you don't want to use what the manufacturer recommends? Try something cheaper that doesn't stick to the vinyl long term? Is spending 10 bucks really worth the possible trouble to avoid spending 30 bucks? I've had this problem with Contractors at work. They want to avoid what Johnsonite recommends for tread and nosings and want to use generic contact cement instead. Don't always end well with the 2 year warranty we put in the contracts.....

I have never done this before and i'm simply asking if there are other options. The money is not an issue. Take it easy.

Always best to use what the tread manufacturers recommend or they may come loose... not good for some one to slip and fall ... Add to this, if your treads have a turned down nosing, there should be a epoxy used just for those. If not, the compression of the foot will push the nosing's down and crack them prematurely. JMO

I actually used some thin strips of velcro, although the velcro adhesive is now stuck to the wood treads, but at least I can remove them for cleaning, its amazing how dirty they get, i think its my 2 dogs.
