atikovi,

I don't have the bucks or the need to own a Mitutoyo digital caliper. I own a digital caliper that I purchased from Advance Auto Parts several years ago. However, it takes me a few tries to get an accurate reading (first reading is off; second reading is right; third reading is to confirm the second one). This is the reason why I purchased the Standard Gage dial caliper.

Dave

Personally, I have yet to find any electronic Caliper that lasts more than 18 months in an average British workshop! Maybe in a dedicated inspection shop they're fine, but with a few knocks, a bit of damp, metal filings and so on, they just don't last!

My 30 year old Moore and Wright dial caliper has no such problems!

I prefer dial as well.

My thoughts too. Analogue is not dead !
... plus sometimes it is just plain annoying to have to buy batteries ....

Got around to killing two birds with one stone. I have been wanting zero offsets for a while. I've also been wanting to have a look at Toptul's stuff. I had been drooling over the Deen set, but haven't had a reply from Factory Gear. The opportunity for these came up, and I jumped at it. Price was quite agreeable, and much less than many of the other options. When every dollar counts, it's a win.

I really like them off of initial impressions. They have nice satin chrome, feel good in the hand, and are cleanly broached, and forged. While it misses a common size in the way of 13mm, I have run across so very few 13mm fasteners on my two cars. It's all 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24 between my KIA and Scion. At least of the stuff that I have done so far. So, even in leaving out a common size, with what I have to work on personally, these fit the bill.

They are a bit thicker in the beam compared to a number of other brands that I have handled (borrowed). On the upside, that should equal less flex/more torque applied to the fastener, where I want it. For the price, I can't complain off the initial inspection. Nothing stays this shiny forever. Lol.

that's an odd assortment of sizes in that toptul set... too much doubling up on sizes and strange skips

It is a little odd... however, there are times when having two of the same sized wrench, with a decent amount of leverage can come in handy. Also, as with most wrenches, the larger the size, the longer the wrench. So, this means that if I need a 10mm, I have two different length long wrenches to choose from. Depends on where I need to reach. Last personal job I did, I would have loved to have the longest of the 10 and 12, and both 14s in hand. Would have been good to have had them before I did the job, but next time I do something similar, I have these. I could whoop someone senseless with either of the two longest in the set. Lol.

This also puts me at liberty to buy singles of any size I might be missing/need (and save a bit off the top). But I am not going to worry about it for now. On top of it, for marginally more money than the Deens would have cost (before shipping, if it was even a possibility), I get more sizes. 8, 10, 22, and 24. The larger sizes would come into play on front end work in my experience. Possibly some of the larger fasteners for trannies.

That being said, I wouldn't mind getting hands on some of the Deen stuff as well, as it looks well crafted as well.

The only long handle flex head 1/2" ratchet I can find at HF is 18" do you happen to remember the part number for that one?

There isn't a part number, this ratchet doesn't exist in the wild. I pieced it together from a new style Pro breaker bar, and a 1/2" flex head ratchet.

Disclaimer: Even after modification, it doesn't fit together very well. If you decide to build one for yourself, be prepared to be disappointed with fitment.

See this thread for more details. I post on page two in detail about modification.

I've needed a newton meter 3/8th for work and for $30 I couldn't resist.

Bought this today so I could strip 25 years worth of white paint from the banister railings. Not high end by any means but still made short work of the paint with 60 grit belts.

I had my eye out for a Buffalo Forge No. 15 floor standing drill press for quite some time. I found this example at a local estate sale for $175. The paint is in fair condition; nothing more than light surface rust. It has a new single phase motor and a new belt. The column, table, and base cleaned up really nice. The table has minimal pitting and marks, which was a real plus. It came with the vice as an added bonus. I am debating whether or not to repaint it... I'd rather use it right away, but I do think about how nice it would look restored.

I also picked up a compatible Quadrill attachment, which should arrive any day now.

That's a sweet drill press... No question.

But that "Quadrill Attachment" is a knockout! Where on earth didya find THAT little gem !?

I went to the Factory Gear store in Tokyo. Deen is their house brand. Frankly, I was unimpressed. They look like cheap Taiwan trying to pass themselves off with a Snap On finish. I'm sure they're okay, but I'd prefer one of the name Japanese brands.

They also sell Koken, KTC, Zeal and Nepros (and Snap-On, also). Nepros come in velvet-lined boxes and are meant to be displayed in glass jewelry cases. Koken is the top-notch Japanese in my book. I walked away with a 1/2" wobble extension as a Japan souvenir.

Upgraded my wrenches. Still waiting on the SAE ratchet wrenches that will hopefully be here today. I also scored these Craftsman dog bone wrenches and bolt-out kit from a buddy for $10, these will be going in my Jeep bag.

Milwaukee 10" locking pliers, Cornwell 1/4" (might be selling though), Craftsman 1/4" accessories, and a Craftsman BFH.

I really don't know what I paid lol. I bought all 4 sets, a Snap-on LED work light, and the BJP1 ball joint press at once. I'm sort of spoiled when it comes to Snap-on tools. My best friend from high school runs a truck so I get everything for cost. This is the standard flank drive 13pc OEXM713B set, retail is $478.

For years I've been skimping on better quality hand tools, in order to build up my collection as fast as possible on a budget. I upgraded to a 56" HF cabinet about a year ago, and now that it is decently full, I'll be weeding out some tools that just don't cut it anymore. I'll be upgrading to better quality American, German, or Japanese made replacements, thanks to lots of reading here on the GJ. My wife and my wallet thank you all... [emoji1]

I started by picking these up today:

I'm sure these are the first of many Wiha tools to come. I have a few various German-made Wiha bit drivers at work and absolutely love them.

I picked these up, too:

I never would have bought these in the store, but I grabbed two sets at a garage sale for a buck each (one not pictured, both still in the packaging). I can always toss them in my spare drawer at work if I hate them that badly, and I probably will once I decide how I feel about Hansen vs. Ernst trays and rails and start using those.

Also, I finally made room in my shop area for this cabinet, which I saved from the dumpster at work:

The lock mechanisms didn't work properly, so instead of asking me to fix them (which is actually part of my job) they just ordered a new one and tossed this one in the dumpster. I had to fish it out to pull the SFIC locks and realized there was hardly anything wrong with it! [emoji35]

I brought it home to use as a band saw stand, since it's super heavy (mostly metal/particle board) but due to limited space above, I decided to use it for all of my power tool accessories instead. The drawers have built in dividers, and are now partly full of drill bits, various saw blades, sanding discs, grinder discs, etc. The bottom has an open slot (seen above the door) and is going to be a bin for trash or dirty rags unless I find a better use for it. It matches my HF cabinet pretty well, and now my tool chargers no longer take up precious workbench space.

The best part: I already fixed the locking mechanisms so once I get some new cores it'll be secure, too. [emoji106]

If those were yellow boxes instead of red, my wife might say it looks like our dining room this past week. I'll be posting a similar picture once my pile is complete. [emoji41]

Do I see 3 of the exact same Fuel kits there?

Just picked up this alignment / pry bar (hope I got the name right) at an auction the other day for 3$. Based on the stamp in the second picture, who manufactured it? How old is it?

Picked up the Fiskars 36" splitting axe from Lowes last night. It's the predecessor to the X27, but I got it for $45 with the $10 off $50 coupon. Same geometry, just doesn't have the orange handle, or newer coating on the head.

Damn this splits nice though. Chopping up the remains of a dead tree the power company took down by the road. Rounds between 15"-24"+ and as long as 36" (obvious they were cutting for speed, not nice firewood length). Blasted through with little fuss. Great weight balance, light enough to keep swinging, heavy enough in the head for great power.
