Re: Getting strated on HVAC

Tell him to check around to see if any local shops are hiring helpers. Hands on is the best way to learn the basics ,then they can point him in the right direction on a school.;)

I've worked for a sheet metal shop, and that's how most of their apprentices started out. I busted my *** as a helper, sealing ducts and hanging tin, and was eventually offered an apprenticeship.

Declined it so that I could go to university though :lol_hitti

Ayuh,.... As a CO, or as a prisoner,..??

If a CO, tell him to stick it out, 'n retire from there,....
He'll be on the gravy train for the rest of his life,....

I guess I should have been straight forward he is a prisoner.

I fixed first post.

We all make mistakes in life,As long as he learns from it you just have to get on with life.
Depending on what he did it may be tough to get a shop to hire him, lots of liability.

I think the book 'Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning' is used for training in the States, (i'm in the uk so things are different here). Its not the best book on the market but will give a grounding in the subject.

There are a lot of techs with youtube channels showing what is typical of the type of work we do and the problems we encounter.

Before he goes too far down the road though i would find out if he will be employable with a criminal record.

Yes we all make mistakes. Before been incarcerated he finished the courses he was taking at the technical school he was enroll. That's why I want to help him since I know he is a very capable man.

He was offered recently to learn HVAC in prison that's why I'm asking the more experience members for help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes he is aware of the difficulties of been hired after his sentence is served.

The thing is that he likes to read and learn (that's why he went to technical school where I met him)

When he put his focus on something he dedicates all his time to master it.

That's why I want to send him some info so he can keep busy inside and learn something new.

Modern refrigeration is the book to have. It is what the nate exam is based off of. But getting a job is the first step.
Ive never been much for learning things from a book myself, thats why I suggested that he try to get on as an apprentice someplace and learn as he goes.
I took some tech school classes a few years back to see if there was anything new I could learn.
After about 4 weeks in the class the teacher asked me what I thought about what we were learning since Id been in the trades a long time.
I told him right in front of everybody that these kids could forget about 90% of what they were teaching because it had no real day to day application in the field.
I ended up teaching most of the electrical stuff in the labs,me and the teacher got into a ******* contest out in the labs one day.
I was showing one of the guys how the electrical system/series of events worked on a furnace on the other side of room before class.
He started bitching that they werent ready for that yet,I told him this is what theyll be working on in the real world so they needed to see where the actual parts were at.
I told him to teach the damn class himself then and spent the rest of the night back in the classroom reading hotrod magazines.
Funny thing is that kid I was showing the parts on the furnace still does furnace installs/sheetmetal work for me on the side, another guy from that class does stuff for me too.;)
The worthless school on the other hand went belly up,might of had something to do with their inability to teach basic real world stuff?:dunno:
