Can anyone positively identify this grinder/buffer? I have scoured the Internet since I got it a year ago and can not find a single picture of one identical to it. The base looks very similar to an Elliott Selecta, but that's where any closeness ends. It's a 110v grinder. I've been pulling my hair out trying to identify this thing exactly. Thanks in advance!

I made a good bit of progress on the pedestal for my mystery grinder. The pedestal is from a commercial 1959 Hobart dough mixer that I saved from being scrapped (and I got for free!!). With the base of the grinder being so much bigger than the top of the pedestal, I wanted to make an adapter that looked like they were made for each other. I think I accomplished that!

I think there is a Snap On branded one somewhere on this thread with the long arm like that one. As for the manufacturer, it has some similarities to my Doerr.

Thanks! I'm really new to the forum, but I have browsed it many times in past, so I'm surprised that I haven't seen another one of these pedestals used for a grinder. If there are others that I missed, it would be awesome to know where I could find a picture. It'd be good to see other designs on an adapter.

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this bench grinder? The grinder & motor have been separately sourced from yard sales etc. the motor is an old Gryphon, but I'm not sure about the grinder...

The grinder body has the letters 'G4' cast on the inside where the pulley runs.

Picked them both up for $25 including a steel mounting stand :)

All comments welcome...

That grinder looks like a "Prairie". IIRC they were sold by Silvo Hardware, in the '70's.

Here is one of mine, a Rockwell 200V 3 phase from the Truckee, CA school district via eBay, the sheet metal base made a great place to mount the VFD.

Have a single phase version of that grinder + a few Baldors & a Baldor built/ JC Penney branded grinder.

First of all let me say a warm hello from the sunny and hot Athens, Greece.

My name is Nikos and after some years of beeing member in the forum, i submit my first post.
This is a recent find in the Ebay Germany, which i fully restored, an AEG - Telefunken 420 Watt, 175X25X51. It is a "bullet proof" made grinder from the late 70s - early 80s of the old good germany, which works as it should.

Sorry for my poor english hope you can understand me....

This one was my grandfathers, then my dads, now mine. Originally pulled out of the trash probably in the 50's

This one is not mine. I saw it on Craigslist and thought I would put the pictures up here. I've never seen one like this and probably for good reason. Looks like an accident waiting to happen. :)

http://cleveland.craigslist.org/tls/4729344747.html

I worked in a truck tire recapping shop where one of these was used with a coarse wire wheel instead of a grinding wheel to prepare tire casings for full tread recapping, section repairs, and patching.

Here's a little 5" Montgomery Ward Powr Kraft I picked up, literally picked up, it was sitting in a pile of garbage in the rain outside an apartment building in Eugene, Oregon. I was on a trip and going for a walk, so I took it back with me to the hotel, dried it off as it was literally full of water, and it ran, so I brought it home in a suitcase and forgot about it for 2 years.

Last night I decided I needed a dedicated grinder for lathe tools as I have buffing wheels on my 8 inch "Associated Machine Tool" grinder and a diamond lapping wheel and soft gray wheel on my Wissota 6 inch. So I decided to fix up the rain grinder.

I plugged it in and it would run but not get up to speed, it was a bit stiff to turn. Probably the moisture hadn't done it any good so I disassembled to see how the bearings looked. 4 screws and it clamshells apart, the shaft of the motor is supported by 2 plain round bushings which are located by circlips. All of it came apart simply and I just cleaned the old lube and crud out of the bearings with an oily q-tip, spun the shaft while holding the bearing surfaces with oily 0000 steel wool, cleaned up the rest a bit and put it all back together. Just put some light machine oil on the bushings, it spins free now.

I did not repaint as who could possibly improve on that lovely orange paint? And of course the name of the original owner, Susan, or is that the name of the grinder?

Note the slot cut into the left end of the shaft so you can use a screwdriver to hold the shaft while turning the nut to remove the wheels. Right side normal threads, left side righty loosy lefty tighty. Both original Powr Kraft aluminum oxide wheels ring fine. Black and Decker originally made these for Montgomery Ward, and this grinder dates back to the 1970's.

So it runs just as good as it ever did now, needs those wheels dressed but I cannot find my diamond dresser. Oh well. E-bay is sending me another one for 3 bucks.

There are silver metal sides for the wheels but they are not pictured.

Heres a dirty old hag from 1944. She can still put out pretty good for her age. Shes a 1/2hp Craftsman grinder and I've been looking for one of these for a while. One turned up on Craigslist in PA and the guy was nice enough to hold it for me. She's a real keeper.

10" GMF maxi, 1.25hp. All the covers and rests are there but had been removed when photo was taken. The linishing attachment currently on my 8" grinder doesn't fit on the 1" shaft of the 10", we are off to Europe for a few? years tomorrow so will investigate reaming/boring out the drive wheel or getting a bigger one upon our return. It's been emotional putting all my tools in storage this week

Picked these three up here locally over the past two months for ~$ 120 total and am already searching the web for more!

1978 or 79 .25 HP 6" Blue Point badged Doerr
Late 30's early 40's .25 HP 6" Sears Companion
Late 40's early 50's .5 HP 7" Milwaukee badged Kingston-Conley

I'm already trolling the government and public auctions for a huge 3 phase...
Addicted already...

Can any of you guru's identify this bench grinder just from the picture? I am going to look at it tomorrow, he wants $100. I have been in need of a grinder and a good stand, I don't like having them on the bench.

Looks like a Baldor. The base stand is definitely a Baldor, that alone is worth the $100. Missing right tool rest, no big deal, can be made or purchased. Either 6" or 8" wheels, either way if it's running, worth the asking cost.

I "see" said the blind man to the deaf man as he picked up his hammer and saw.

Definitely a Baldor base. I have been looking for one...LOL...

Looks like a Baldor to me too, a "U ****" deal if single phase, and might still be even if 3 phase.

It's in back of my truck as we speak :) I will get details and pictures shortly. It is a baldor grinder on a baldor stand. 3/4 hp single phase 110v.

Ok here it is. I got it for $90 and got some other stuff for pennies on the dollar.
Can anyone educate me on this grinder? I had been wanting one because my other one vibrated the work bench so bad and didn't have any power. Wire wheels get out of round quick.
I know this one is nice because it's 3/4hp and single phase. Not sure what size wheels yet, I think 7-8.
Runs super smooth, the toggle switch doesn't work, just runs when plugged in. Should be simple fix.

Any idea where to get one of these switches with two terminals on each side? Will Home Depot have?

Edit: double pole single throw at Home Depot. Bingo

I think this might be a "General" from looking around. Got it for $20 and added the motor for $10.

uploadfromtaptalk1452572434484.jpg

It's done well for me set up as a grinder with a wire wheel but it was vibrating more than it should have. Eventually I got a dedicated grinder and put a buffing wheel (1/2" + 1/2") on with the wire wheel but I noted it was quiet and smooth er with only one side tooled.
I did a lot of tool cleaning with the two sides and vibration and NOW I'm redoing this thing.
uploadfromtaptalk1452573250874.jpg

I've got the wheels off and cleaned some of the gunk, and gave the bearings a little machine oil but they seem to be fine and it's never been smoother BUT...

The shaft has approximately 1/16" of play left to right and back when I move it like that manually.
It doesn't seem to float back or forth when running and the bearings are seated in there...

I haven't looked in from the inside out... Mainly because of the lack of access and I don't know what I'd be taking everything apart to look for, yet.

That's where you guys come in... What can I do or be looking for?

Do you think it would help the O/a balance to move the pulley to dead center?

I have more questions than answers.
first I must say that I have 3 phase to my property and at a latter date will be building a new shop that will have 3ph.

There is a 10" delta bench grinder with a 1.5 hp 3 ph 1725 rpm 3/4" shaft. for $25 locally. The guards and rest are all in place from the crappy pics it looks like 1 side is missing a wheel others side has one but who know's what kind of shape. No stand.

Can anyone tell me anything about these grinders?

Thanks

I think it's Baldor week...but do buffers count here? Picked this up for $40 today, figured I would post it here in addition to the garage sale thread. Three phase 1.5 HP Baldor 409B runs like a dream, even if it needs a new coat of paint. Needs some hardware as well, but I'm more than pleased with it.

Runs smoothly with one wheel or none. The shaft is straight but the keyhole for the pulley set screw (that someone had bored themselves)and the easily damaged threads are evidence it is soft iron as you say. The pulley was 1" off center which I moved but I won't know if that quieted things down till I've done some painting.
How does the shaft come out? What tool I dunno how to even get the belt out at this point[emoji53]

$40! That is major SUCKAGE. I'll give you $100 as is. I've been looking for a dedicated buffer for a while, excellent find.
