I hooked up a 1/2" Snap On impact and free wheeled it and it ran that tank down pretty quick ...

Gallons of available air has nothing to do with torque required to remove a lugnut.

Vartz is correct. A good quality impact, in good condition, actually does NOT use a large volume of air to remove lug nuts. With 6 or 8 (or more) lug nuts, you may have to wait for the tank to refill. I suspect you ARE going to need all the pressure that compressor can muster.

165 ft lb is going to take some grunt from you on your torque wrench !

My CAT 10020 10gal 2HP showed up today. Got it from amazon so glad it came with no damage. only thing was instead of putting it on my proch they dropped it off in front my garage in the rain. Not a bit deal since it didnt rain to much so did leak through the top of the box....plus it made it easier to open and rip into smaller pieces for disposal!

I only got to do a small test in airing up my truck tires (285/75/R16) from 30PSI to 40PSI. It worked just fine for that

It is nice and quiet too. Id say it sounds either slightly less or equal to my truck idling (toyota tacoma V6) for reference. Time to fill the tank was pretty dang quick too. I didnt time it but easily under two minutes.

Sadly i dont have a impact gun or i would test it on the lug nuts for reference

They are cute little guys aren't they!

I was able to get rid of my 33 Gal Craftsman Noise Producer for $165 in less than 24 hours.

It was heavily Hot Rodded.

Yup it is a nice little guy!

Only thing i dont like is the wheels. It needs a spacer or something so they stick out a 1/4" more from the frame. Right now mine rubs just a bit. Ill probably just add a washer r two tomorrow

Agreed, there's a bit of mis-fitment with the wheels.

Make sure you have them oriented properly. They have a boss on one side, they are asymmetrical.

I didnt notice the wheels were asymmetrical! Just did a quick look before i put them on. Managed to put them both on wrong. Just swapped them and its a much better fit!

That extra 15 ft lbs is going to take some grunt !

That's true! But I found these Torque sticks that go up to like 700#.

I'll probably get a 120, a 140 and a 160.

I had to tighten some CAM gears down on a Porsche 930 at 200#, not that easy to do and not change the cam timing. Course I wouldn't use Torque Sticks on that!

Well i know someone had been asking about using the 10gal 2hp with an impact to remove lug nuts at 165ft-lbs.

So since my new IR 2235ti showed up i decided to go do some messing around.

First thing to note is the output psi. I was getting an initial 1-2 seconds at 90psi but then it dropped to 60psi where it stayed. I never ran the tank out of air so it might drop more. Thats with a kobalt brand 3/8 50ft hose and based on the "output" gauge on the compressor itself.

But for my "test" i went ahead and torqued 4 lug nuts on my truck to 145ft-lbs (normally i do 100ft-lbs). Then let the compressor fill all the way up. I got three lug nuts off with no problem and without the pump refilling the tank. Actually on the third as it was just finishing take the lug off the compressor turned on. But i went right to the fourth lug nut and it still took it off just fine (while filling the tank).

So it works just fine for a impact unless you need the full 90psi (ie full torque of the gun). But for the price its good enough for me!

Hope that helps

That sux bad. We feel your pain! That switch feels really cheap to me and feels like a point of failure in itself.

Ahhh I take it back and I'm deleting that post. I tried it again yesterday and it was fine. It just needed a different outlet.

While I do like it, the noise reduction though wasn't as grand as their youtube videos allude. Maybe I had a quiet craftsman to begin with all along.

Hmmm, huge difference between this one and my Craftsman. Did you put in the air filters? I'm amazed how quiet it is.

Your Crapsman must be one of the quiet ones.

Noise reduction I think. Been running a framing nailer on mine. Got 2 full weekends of hard use putting up fence pickets. So far so good. Can't even hear it kick on from 150' of air hose away

I bought the twin aluminum tank 4610a from Home Depot, $207 shipped on sale. It replaced my 33 gallon 5.5hp crapsman. Man is this baby quiet! My lathe makes more noise! Very happy with it so far. Plopped it down on a $7 HF mini movers dolly for easy portability.

Perhaps though unlikely that my old 7 gallon hotdog was a quieter version. I really hated the pitch if anything.

lol, it's just that on their videos it seems like the difference was worlds apart while I think it's really closer to a 20% noise reduction at least in my case.

I do have an actual decibel meter but I'm out of 9v's at the moment. Then again, I don't remember what my old 7 gallon was putting out so it's really moot at this point.

I could have put you in the Garage with my 33 gallon and after 5 minutes you would have done anything I wanted you to do to get out of there! It is truly amazing how much noise that thing made.

I gave up a 33 gallon to get a quiet 10 gallon.

The sound differences on the youtube video are "spot on" in my situation. My compressor may have been louder!

You really have a hard time staying in the garage when the 33 gallon runs. It is deafening. It's like trying to hang out in the garage with a freakin' lawn mower that has a 1/2 gone muffler.

How come they don't have one with a larger air tank - 60 gal. Are the motors too small to fill a tank that size? Can't they make a larger motor that's quiet with a larger tank?

I have the 10020 and yes, I wish they came out with something larger than just 10 gallons. However I can remove lug nuts (5 per wheel) on all 4 tires without the need to wait for the tank to fill up.

I just received my 10 gallon via HD and shipped by UPS.

It was double boxed and the outside box looked man handled. The top styrofoam was bashed hard, broken all around the pump but no visual damage to item.

I think CAT would be well served if they marked the outside box in large noticeable letters "HEAVY = 90 LBS". I witnessed first hand a ups employee helping the driver trying to handle the box not knowing how heavy it was and preceded to pick it up and it didn't go well and wasn't expecting how heavy it was. He was happy when I brought a dolly.

On first test run as per instructions it was sounding very quiet (impressively) but around 60 psi's I started hearing a slight rattling noise inside the motor or tank (unreachable). Sounds like a loose washer or something similar making the overall sound louder not by a whole lot (40%) but definitely noticeable and it's a way more irritating sound. It's a Bummer and will be calling CAT to seek advice, we're buying this for how quiet it is. At least I can return it to HD.

Testing the tank from zero psi's to 120 psi's is: 2:32 minutes.

No problem running my sioux die grinder for a while but you definitely can tell when the psi's start going down about half way through the cycle before the pump turns on. Pump doesn't come on till it hits 90 but it doesn't take long to refill.

The 5.3 cfm @ 90 pis performance is not bad at all for a 10 gallon and it's very quiet even with the rattling. I can have a conversation on the phone while standing right next to the compressor.

I must say the manual is not the best to say the least and similar to a HF manual. It's full of large warning symbols all over every page and in between them is small #8 font sentences vaguely written. Reading it online via PDF is much better than the hardcopy.

Would this be a good candidate for a diy'er on autos? Just basic wrenching. Lugs nuts and such?

Anyone here who is interested in the 4610A should also checkout the husky unit with the same model number. It's even cheaper at $179 regular price, so are are likely to be able to use a Lowes 10% coupon or even a HFT 20% coupon if you are lucky.

Called California Air Tools today about my new compressor making a metal noise sound inside the motor or tank and they said no problem. Hopefully I will be getting a shipping label to return this one with an immediate exchange for a new one.

Their offices are only 140 miles from me so lets hope I get a replacement soon.

I guess they still need to ramp up QC. Mine has been running quite a bit in the past two weeks running my framing nailer putting up fence pickets (and also did some pneumatic impact driver work to to finish out the day putting fence rails up when my Bosch batteries died) It has been on at least 2 hours every night for the past week and then all day Saturday and Sunday the past two weekends without issue.

Best part about this is the compressor in the garage (that touches my 9 month old sons room) doesn't wake him up when he is sleeping.

I believe that deal at Menards is the new model that is supposed to be even slightly quieter and built for a longer life cycle.

Are you glad you went with it over one of the smaller ones? I'm looking to replace this.. thing:

Like I said in the other thread I doubt this thing can really do 5 CFM but that's the claim. The smaller CAT compressors claim really low CFMs at 90 PSI. I was looking at the 10020 at HD since I've got a 50$ gift card burning a hole along with my Sunex rebate cards. It has a 5+CFM @ 90.

Well.. I feel a bit dumb. We went to Home Depot and looked around. I found the compressors and there were no CATs. My girlfriend says "Did you look online to make sure they had any?" "Uh..." I pulled it up on my phone. "Online Only Item" :( And they are out of stock as well. So that was a total bust.

Maybe I'll save someone else the trip. At least the Home Depot is only 20 minutes away from here. Some people have a much longer trip to be disappointed after.
