Re: My favorite ratchet....

You hate soft grips but a soft grip is your favorite, funny how that worked out.:lol_hitti
The reason I do not like them, when I have oil/anti-freeze in my hand they slips.
They do not have them, in hard handle. so Mr.Nutcase has to adjust.....

I like the look of thoes Proto round head ratchets. I have the new Facom style RHFT that Proto switched to recently but have always wanted to get my hands on its predecessor. What do you think of them?

if you're talking about the 5457A and 5452A I think a few people have said they are rougher than expected for a 90 tooth ratchet. It uses a dual pawl system.

scottguehne has some threads about having trouble with them

I lubed them up with mobil 1 grease in a tube they work fine for me, I don't have any issues with the sockets, but i also don't use them often since I have the speeder snap on's (ratchets)or the swivel/roto heads, that I am like the most.

How are your top wider drawer feel? smooth or little heavy to pull??

Well, let me see......Several years ago, the top drawer was sagging and dragging on the drawers directly under it. After several weeks of crying and complaining, I finally had to resort to dropping the "M" word(matco) to get my dealer to act. I had already weighed all of the tools in the drawer(about 175 lbs. at that time) and told him I was going to trade that drawer sagging piece of junk off on a new Matco. I got a new drawer and slides the very next week!!!

More to the point, I'm ok with the weight. I think it pulls good although, I don't know what it would be like with 400+ lbs. I have to be careful sometimes when I'm in a hurry grabbing tools as the top drawer can get away from me when closing it with greasey or oily hands.:shocking: It hurts like hell to get a finger pinched!

Are these your favorite to use, or for sentimental reasons?

that handle looks too big for that ratchet lol

I think it might be just a little. I used to have one with the black hard handle that was about the same size as I recall. The new soft grips are quite a bit more slender than the old ones. My biggest complaint's about the soft grip is they are too hard to keep clean, they are not nearly as flame retardant, and they lack the square corners that your hand "bites" into, especially when covered in oil. This one fits my hand well, so I'm happy.

Tool pimp shows up on Thursdays and happens to have a few of the old handles on his truck so I just might "convert" a few more!

On thursday, I bought one of these:part#SDD5R1ROdescription:* p42* num. 4 flat orangprice:* $11.15I got around to installing it today.* I think it turned out really nice.* The handle is a #4, which is actually too big for the ratchet, but I like the way it fits my hand.* Also, like caper's SLS80 handle swap, I had to shorten the shank to make this work. The handles are still available, but probably not for long.FYI:(

My main go-to ratchet is a Husky indexable 3/8ths. For tighter clearances I use a Craftsman round-head 3/8ths. I really like Snap-On ratchets, but since I bought an air ratchet I don't really have a use for a hand ratchet except in some circumstances, and my cheapies work just fine for that.

That said, I have a Snap-On 3/8ths at home that I barely use. I think I actually brought it home from work because I didn't use it.

For everything else, I figure out a way to finagle in my 3/8ths mini air ratchet.

As for 1/2 inch, I love my Ace Hardware push button. Great feel, good heft, a very solid piece for not much money. Same with their pliers.

I have a Husky indexable 1/4 inch ratchet, but I use that so rarely I barely care.
