Big enough garage (8m x 6m)

In the process of getting plans drawn up to extend our house here in the UK and also to build a decent sized detached garage. Looks the dimensions will be 8m (26ft approx) wide by 6m (20ft approx) deep which should be more than big enough. The problem with having a blank canvas is always the worry of if this will be big enough. I'm sure it will, but struggling to visualise it. Anyone else with a garage roughly the same size who could post some pics?

Thanks, Jamie

I know you guys typically don't own 18~20' vehicles like us ya-hoo Texans but depth in front of the thing you're working on is a primary consideration. What I did here was actually get some form stakes and twine and lay out various floor plans right on the ground. I used stakes to simulate doors, walls, etc. It really helped, ruled out about 3 of my initial ideas real quick. I'm 24x40, the only thing I would change is going deeper, like 26 or 28, even 30. Would make a huge difference for me - but then my F350 is 241" (6.12m) nose to tail.

This is What I have.

The two rectangles represent short bed Chevy trucks, about average size of an automoblie, small compared to the huge trucks most guys seem to like nowadays. You may have smaller cars being in U.K.
The 3' wide section between the swinging doors is filled with a workbench, drill press, and roll around tool box which I never roll around. The other two walls are covered with shelves and cabinets. Those dimensions don't consider the thickness of the walls, so inside dims are actually less. I have a lot of cars, but the two that actually run live outside because the garage is stuffed full!!!

You might want to go a little bit bigger, I is nice to have walk around room in your garage. I have never heard any one say that they wish that they had built their garage smaller. Only the other way around. Including my self...

Mine is 6.5x9.5 inside and is big enough for all required tools and equipment. But only if i work on 1 car at a time. And hoarding parts and equipment is not an option. Only necessities.

You can check my build out to get an idea of how "big" my garage is.

20ft deep isn't deep enough... My garage is 21ft deep and I have barely enough space to walk around my Toyota Camry. When I tried to park my Expedition in there, I have to leave the garage door open to walk around the back... I don't even want to try pulling my SRW Ram 3500 in there...

If it were me, usable garage really needs to be 26ft deep to be able to have a small work bench in the front of a parked vehicle... 24 ft deep at a minimum.

I'm currently building a 24Dx32W. I really wish I would've went 26 or 28x32.
By the time you factor in wall thickness it's really 23x31 on the inside.
My garage will mostly be used for car detailing and working on my Mustang so I wanted it wider than deeper. All my benches and toolboxes will be off to the side anyways

Where are you at, mate ? Put your location in your profile.

Not sure what yu are driving, but around here 6m wide would not be big enough for 2 cars with any useful storage on the side. Add another meter in each direction if you can. If you can't go wider or longer, go up ! An oversized (2m x 6m about 1.5m off the ground) shelf/mezzanine at the back will give you a large amount of storage.

A lot of places outside the US have "different" construction methods than we do (buildings that size are usually "stick built"; 2x4 or 2x6). Most of us are fascinated with other building methods.

hi, sorry, should have put the location up. I'm in the UK, and the garage will be to house an old 911 and a classic mini.
