I'm looking for a review for KD USA wrenches. I found a good deal on some and they look great but how do they perform/hold-up to daily wrenching. I use s•k at work but would like a set for my shop at home. Will they be atleast somewhat comparable. Never used anything KD USA just gear wrench

There are many threads about them however, which ones are we talking about satin or full polished versions?
Here's my spin: The satin ones are basically sound no frills wrenches. They're kind of a better finished US Made Craftsman raised panel wrench without the raised panel.
The full polished ones are the true sleepers. Great balance and feel, good fit, off corner engagement on the boxed end, well finished and US made. Now there are two versions of the full polished wrenches. the early first generation from the 1980s looks like they took a satin wrench and polished it. There is a pronounced lip where the open end meets the beam. This version is nothing to write home about and I'd avoid it. However, the newer second generation are much nicer. Better chrome, smooth between beam and open end. Think of them as a standard length version of the Danaher made Craftsman US professional series combination wrenches. I have more than a couple of sets of these wrenches and they have always been my favorites. sadly, production ceased on these wrenches over 5 years ago, Ebay and close out places like Cripe Distributing has some open stock left but, that too will dry up eventually.

I have a mix of Armstrong, Kobalt USA and KD in my wrench rolls. All are satin finish bought through Cripe, and are identical besides the logo stamped in. Absolutely love them.

These are full polished. I was thinking about them but I believe I will go with sk or wright. Here is the link, looks like a good deal just maybe a little hard on the hands though
http://m.ebay.com/itm/kd-wrench-set-From-10-24-USA-Metric-Snap-/111840932893

You can build a set on here for cheaper. Plus they have Armstrong, Allen (same as KD) and Gearwrench (basically same thing again) and more! http://www.cripedistributing.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=kd+wrench

I, however, would search for used Snap On, Wright, Williams, Mac, Matco, etc etc instead of those. I have built quite a quality tool collection off Ebay. Heres a tip. Find a set of wrenches you like or sockets, etc. and click "ask the seller a question." Then make them an offer cheaper than their buy it now price before committing. Most of the time if its a reasonable offer they will accept, or come back at a cheaper price than listed. Good luck!

Great wrenches at todays closeout prices.

My only gripe is they are a bit short for my liking, especially the larger sizes.

I have a few mixed in to complete sets. I prefer the RP Craftsman, but that's me. The RP's are a dime a dozen, work well for me and last for years and years.

You can also find the Allen versions at Fleet Farm, I've seen them in Green Bay when I go there on business.

The KD satin wrenches from recent history also have off-corner engagement on the box end, it's not just the polished version as Fedwrench's post seems to claim.

As mentioned, they're basic Danaher wrenches from before the Apex Tools era. They're basically the same thing that Danaher sold under a bunch of different brand names. They're good, basic wrenches.

Possibly but, there were many satin finished wrenches manufactured without the off corner engagement feature and who knows what vintage you're buying on Ebay or from a closeout type place as most come without packaging. :dunno:

I have a set and they are good wrenches. Not Wright or SnapOn, but a solid middle of the road tool. I definitely wouldn't pay anything close to that price for that particular set.

Like some others here, I have used the KD USA, Armstrong, Allen USA, and even GearWrench (Taiwan or China) as fill in sizes to complete sets. Generally from Cripes. A good way to find what you need. Of these, I put the Armstrong highest, but the KD USA or Allen USA just below the Armstrong. - Paul

Maybe a little off subject but could someone tell me why the Wrightgrip wrenches are twice the cost.of the regular wright wrenches? I always hear good things about the Wrightgrips but I'm at awe at the price tag of them.

12mm is definitely missing. If you're going to pick up this set, ask the seller why is 12mm missing.

I was thinking if you are going to buy from Cripe you should go with the Kobalt USA wrenches as they are/were made by Williams. Rumor has it anyways...

Regardless if they are made by Williams or not, are the Kobalt USA comboination wrenches a solid buy?

1st gen Kobalt USA was Williams. IMO great quality.
2nd gen Kobalt USA was Danaher. IMO decent quality.

Williams Kobalt should have a Snap-on date stamp. It also has a V-cut open end. The beam is squared off (which some dont like). Also the size marking style looks similar to that of a Snap-on wrench.

I have some USA KD wrenches in the 20mm + sizes. They're the polished version combination wrenches. Not bad, but they're a bit shorter than I normally like. They work great and can't say they weren't worth the $5 or so I paid per wrench from Cripe.

Cripe Kobalt wrenches are Danaher made and nearly match the KDs and are all similar quality to Craftsman Raised Panels. My box is full of all three. I believe the USA Allen wrenches are Danaher too.

That looks like a good deal if the seller comes off his price a little. I have used matco wrenches before and have to say there awesome! I wanted to get a set that goes from 7 or 8 to 22mm for around a hundred and just bought another set of SK. Paid 120 shipped lightly used. Im pretty happy

If it is not one of the regular Wright dealers perhaps they are selling old stock.
I don't think Royal Supply or Epstein's have the old non-Wrightgrip anymore.
I am not sure if the Wrightgrip feature is on the double open ends or angle wrenches.

I've got a few satin chrome finished KD wrenches in the home roll. They get the job done, and they don't break the bank. Nothing wrong with them.
