GFL, why do you "need" it? Patience or it'sgoing to be a real POS.

Why I "need" one? All I have is an old SO KRA-53, and it is PACKED! I got a cheap Stanley one but the drawers sag and the metal is one step up from tin foil its shot already. Why 32"? I have Very limited space so I need my box to be able to hold a top chest, have lots of room in the drawers and still have enough room to double as a work space on top.

Dreams are good, but the reality is a Benjamin won't buy much of a 32" S-O roller. I scored a like-new 26" which had been pried open in a burglary and the drawers straightened out pretty nicely, but that was a one-time thing.

What is the consensus here on market value for 32" rollers?

Depends on where you live, in my area you won't find one at that price. PA maybe a different story

It's not a different story in PA. I buy these old boxes from Virginia to PA. $100 is unreasonable, they just aren't there. I guess I've found a couple but they were all beat up and need work which, if you're willing to put in the time, is fine. Junker, you need to be realistic and save up a couple/few hundred. That will put you in a better position to get what you want.

The best place to find one in that budget is on a weekday auction. Still gonna be hard to find but not impossible. I have seen a top and bottom go for $150 in usable shape.

It's more than just money. There just aren't that many 32-33" boxes available. It seems that when the tool chest market expanded beyond 26" boxes, it quickly went from 26" to 41". I have a 33" lower tool chest, and I think the reason I got it was that the line of 33" boxes been discontinuted. If you look long enough, you'll find a 32" tool chest, but it may take a while.

Patience, checking the sale ads, craigslist and ebay everyday. I've found my KR537/557's on craigslist, and didn't pay a 100 bucks for them. Intact functional boxes usually go for around 200-700 bucks in my area. Mine were pretty rough cosmetically so it was either live with the rust, dings and dents or strip and paint. I painted mine and happy with the way they turned out. Good luck with your search!

You'll have to have both patience and a few hundred dollars more to get a snap on box.

Start saving money, and if you save $10 to $20 per week, by the time you see a box at a reasonable price on CL or other similar venue, you'll probably have enough to pay for it. It's months between reasonably priced boxes coming up on CL here, and has been in the previous 2 places I lived also.

I looked for years to find a good set of snap-on for less than $1000. In that time, I bought two new Menards Mastercraft stacking set boxes and one set of Kennedy's used for much less than $1000 per set, and never did get a snap-on.

I did get a 26" set of snap-on boxes a month or so ago, they were old and repainted, had slides instead of roller glides, the bottom roller had half drawers and then a stuff space, and in general were not very usable, and didn't hold much stuff. I resold them for $300 for the set. (bought them for the tools, they weren't worthwhile to me as boxes.) Pricing them at $300 was maybe a bit under market value here, I had 5 guys in line to buy them, and the first guy took them.

Moral of the story is if you think you have to have snap-on, you're going to have to pay more than they are probably worth if you compare to other similar boxes, or will have to wait close to forever and be able to jump on an opportunity immediately before someone else does. The demand for snap-on boxes used at a good price greatly exceeds the supply of people that are willing to sell them at less than they paid for them or less than they can sell them for if they wait a few days for the right buyer.

It's not impossible, well maybe with your time constraint, but it will take time, patience, quick acting when the time is right and finally a bit of good luck wouldn't hurt. Additionally at that price range you are going to probably have to do some, if not alot of work to it.

How old are you? If you are younger, especially in school I understand the budget, BTDT. But if you are ~30+ and can't afford more than $100 dollars for a bottom box I think you need to take a serious look at your life.

Another "problem" is that most of the 31-33" boxes are sold with a top box set, so your initial outlay may have to be larger than what you forsee. Even if you don't need the top/side/etc box.

If you really need a box soon to use and can fit it, I'd seriously look at the HF44"

I just bought a top & bottom from the early 80's for 500.00 and felt I got a good deal. Ended up selling the top box to a friend, I was after the roll cab for an upcoming Steevo style bench project

Additionally you do not NEED a snap on box, you just WANT a snap on box. Nothing wrong with that, but let's be upfront about it. Mac, matco, cornwell, proto, etc. all made 33" boxes, some of which I would rather have over their snap on brethren.

any good treasure hunter will tell you that you can buy an example of anything on this planet with a $100 bill. but when, where and how is anybody's guess. when you're talking $100 for a Snap-on rolling box, you're talking straight up treasure hunting; no retail or wholesale about it. treasure hunting requires extensive time, energy, effort and patience that are all combined with methodical application of same (the hunt). as a treasure hunter you can't be in a hurry to find anything, only in a hurry to get there….

i find my treasure at a very large OldSchool swap meet that's located on the wrong side of the tracks. several of the top shelf antiques dealers on the westside of los angeles, california go there as well. those are the guys i have to compete with on my hunts. the lesson learned is that the early bird gets the worm as long as he knows it's a worm he's looking at; knowledge is powerful stuff. fortunately, none of these guys collect or use Snap-on tools and know very little about them.
i've picked up excellent condition Snap-on boxes for as little as $13.00 and as high as $150.00 in the past year. but, i get out there most every morning. i've built up a network of sellers that actually hold Snap-on pieces for me when they bring their wares to the swap meet. the bottom line is that you've got to work your **** off if you're going to be a treasure hunter, and a $100.00 Snap-on roller will not come to you any other way than through the hard work of the hunt.

good luck with your search and i hope that your hunt is memorable.

Well put. Knowledge is truely the power and the thrill of the hunt is the best part. I can remember more about where and how I found a piece compared to how much I paid and if I sell how much I made. I have found also pawnshops in rough neighborhoods to hold a gold mine. Always bring cash best barter weapon you can have. Good luck in your hunt

a 33" roller with a 26" top on it, aint gonna leave you much work space....

and i agree, a SO 33" roller cab for $100 probably aint gonna happen...

at least in my lifetime :headscrat

i did get a "once in a lifetime deal" on one set of my boxes....

traded a set of remline 26" boxes for the 33" SO top and bottom

might try organizing what you have, might find some room

OP, I have several of the boxes you "need," and am not too far away, but I'm not going to give them away nor trade for stuff not worth 1/10th the box. If you can come up with a reasonable deal, we can talk. I don't "need" as many boxes as I have, and I'm always willing to help out someone in need. That said, I spend a LOT of time and money searching, networking, and travelling to get the deals I get, and I'm not looking to give them away. I do collect them after all.

Look for a 26" wide, your top box will fit. As said earlier there`s not that many 33" out there. The 33" I have seen being wider seem to have been over loaded and slides worn out. Depending where you are located at with effort you should be able to find a 26" for $100- 200 depending on codition. Twersty is a good guy if you can work out a deal.

I've seen this also, 26"s seem to be pretty common around here, I'll look into one if I cant come up with more stuff to trade with Twersty witch I really hope I can.

Second paragraph of post 14 is pretty harsh and a bit judgemental.

Self reflection is worthwhile time spent.

Some people do a career or hobby because it's what they've done. Sometimes it's done without reasonably contemplating whether it's actually putting them in a better place.

There's nothing wrong with looking at the future with a more diverse perspective.

the Kr557 was full of junk tools that went into the junk pile, But I did find a full set of snap on 3/8 universal impact metric sockets and a set of sae crowfeet sockets. I figured that the universal sockets was worth more than I paid for the entire box....
So I guess that they are out there, But few and far between. And I agree I feel that my box should sell for about the 200.00 range if I wanted to resale it. Richie D.

Nope, just a bit of reality given the constraints the OP has placed on the situation from someone much experienced on the matter.

Wow, I purchased my kr557 33 in bottom box for 50.00 including tools.

That wasn't a purchase, but a miracle visited upon you. Most of us have been fortunate to receive one or two of those, but that's not representative of the real world market value.

Several years back, at an estate sale, held the day after a blizzard, in a dark, unheated garage, I found a '40s-'50s Snap-On triple stack filled with old Blue Point, Snap-On, a few MAC. I was the first one to dig my way to it, asked the price; was told $150. Said, "I'll take it." Had to restrain myself from shouting, "SOLD! SOLD! SOLD!" and dancing all the way back to get my truck and load it.

I could have put it on craigslist for $999 and sold it in a day. I could have cleaned and sold the tools and boxes individually for more than $1500 if I wanted to fool with eBay. To do so might have been to show lack of appreciation for my good fortune, so I kept most of it.

So, yes, we do know miracles happen, but when someone asks for advice on where to find a Snap-On roller, seldom do we recommend regular entreaties to the god of one's choice.
