CRSINMICH, here you go, a RAE to fit in with your camping gear.

- 3" jaws, opens about 2.5".
- 10" overall length, and about 5" x 5" height and width.

Solid little vise, with some great character in the paint and finish, although not sure if it's original.

I can't find a date on it anywhere, but I'll try and figure that out during the day.

VA: part of the reason i started the weigh loss thread was because my diet and exercise were not conducive to normal sleeping patterns or my health. i still wake up at 2 or 3am and its a quiet time to read threads on GJ or do some CL nationwide searches for old vises and cool stuff. i'm starting to sleep better with losing weight, but 3 IPA's last night might have had some reason i was up that late. :D

That said looking forward to seeing what 2 vises you want to post on the Vise of the Year thread i started for CRS and all of us.

ALL: post up your favorite vises and if you find a category i didn't list then post one you think should be added and if enough interest i'll (we'll) add it. As some of you know i'm not a fan of the expression YOU **** even though it's all in fun and not a category i'll be adding. i do like that some of you find $500-$1500 vises for less than $100 or free in your driveway so i'll definitely acknowledge a WELL DONE or DAMN for those deals.

speaking of which i can't seem to remember who found the 8 inch Wilton bullet in the scrap pile so pictures of it might warrant another WELL DONE.

cheers all

I dig the little ones! Nice RAE and the baby bullet!

Ok. I need some help. I recently picked up a Reed 205 (thx CRS!). But, the original handle is long gone. I have material to make a new one. But (there's always a but), i have no idea of the original dimensions. Does anyone have a 205 that would be kind enough to give me handle measurements? I am interested in length and diameter of the handle (3/4" rod seems too dainty and 1" doesnt fit) Also the ball diameter. I figured if anyone in the world knows, he prolly posts on this thread!

Thinking about hitting a semi local auction this weekend. Any insight on this guy just from the pics? Looks big and maybe a Parker but the swivel lock seems different :dunno:

Ended up being a large athol in ok to fair shape. Missing the handle retaining clip and the dynamic jaw was frozen...still went for 375.00. Too high for me.

Handle length 13- 3/4". diameter is 3/4" Ball 1- 5/8" diameter x 1-3/8" length

Wilton 350SJ swivel jaw. It's no beauty and has been welled used. I made the dust cap out of a brass freeze plug and painted it, (sorry no bling) Check out the lug nut locks, I rethreaded them to 1/2"- 13 and ground them flat. I flipped the jaws upside down for a nicer top. I'll put it on the finished shelf and get another one off the floor to work on next.

I’m going to borrow a phrase from Bagged’s Big Book of Understated Statements. “I did a little work on the Baby Bullet today.” This is as far as I’m going to go until I decide on a finish, if any. It looks good all shiny like that. The sharp-eyed among you might notice little flecks of red. I decided to adopt Fretter’s idea of leaving a little of the original color for future owners who might want to take it back to the original color. Yeah, that’s why the red is still there – honest.
p.s. I couldn’t find any beer cans. How about an bottle of ale?

Get: I noticed that you have a new post for your Wilton mailbox. What happened to your Parker box? Local delinquents?

Seriously though, great job as ever. Keep cranking them out.

I'll definitely hold on to it for you, maybe make a trade for something small and American made?
I'll keep in touch over the next while and maybe I'll end up in Sarnia again with work, or if you are heading to Algonquin this year, I can catch up with you en route! My parents have some property in Haliburton, and an excuse to head North is always welcome

That can beside the vise is indeed a tall can, 473mL, or almost exactly 16oz

Get - Sorry to hear about your trailer. That *****, and not in a good GJ way.

No vises at the sales today, BUT .......

I did find a base for a Craftsman 5180 3-1/2" vise (the one with the wings on the sides) that was left behind. It was "everything is FREE" day. :rocker:

I finished the second of two American scale Vise's for a friend. These weren't your run of the mill American scale. These were used in the factory in KC,MO. The plant closed in "62" and these ended up in the hands of a collector who passed them on to his son. It turns out he has several of them still. Kevin made new jaw inserts and swivel locks for them .

Sorry I only took one picture of the swivel vise before I handed it over.

This is my first post in the VISE thread......I've got a Wilton and a few other vises (which I'll post pics of later) but I wanted to post pics of a new vise I just got yesterday.
Kind of different and unusual than all the other vises posted here.....

I know there are guys here that have seen this type of vise before but they are extremely hard to find in the wild.....I posted a want ad in the Wanted! section for a used one and with over a 1,000+ lookers, I had no luck.....

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309246

So, I bought a new one! :rocker:

Some pic....

20151212_150830.jpg 20151212_150843.jpg 20151212_151026.jpg

You can see from the pics one of it's intended use.

Nice job Getridone, is this the one I posted that was close to you. If so then even better. Got a bunch more to do, looking forward to seeing your work.

Sorry to hear about your Trailer.

Nice job on the American Scale Top, good to see the jaws fit fairly well, American Scale jaws are not built very accurate, their threaded holes are all over the place.

It took some work but they fit. I think these were seconds... Lots of flaws. Never left the factory but seen plenty of use. I had to dig foundry sand out of every spot you can think of. I took my time and cleaned up the cast where it was needed and they turned out very nice with your help. !

Cheers for the link to the Vise of the Year 2015 thread. :) I haven't been vice hunting much lately. Though I'll take some pics of the few I got since my last show and tell post.

I quite like that swivel jaw Wilton.
There's one on ebay UK. Quite a rarity over here.

The seller also has a nice newish Swindens too.

KMS: I think you should post that picture of a vise on your tablecloth on the new VISE OF THE YEAR FOR 2015 thread. It could go in the Best Vise Accessory category. As I remember the vise looked pretty good too. Seriously though, you should have vises that would go in many of the categories. Please post a few.

Latest addition to the herd: A Champion, 6" wood workers clamp on vise out of Geneva O. USA. MARKED "Pat. Applied for" so must be earlier than the Jan 2, 1917 Pat. dates I got googling for it. Seems to not be too rare or valuable, but a cool little job none the less!

Edit: (Added)

US Patent: 1,211,024
Woodworking Vise
Patentees:
Albert L. Wilson - Willoughby, OH
Frank McGlinchy - Willoughby, OH

USPTO Classifications:
269/245, 269/252, 269/256, 269/98

Tool Categories:
work holding : vises : bench vises

Assignees:
None

Manufacturer:
Unknown

Witnesses:
Unknown

Patent Dates:
Applied: Sep. 08, 1916
Granted: Jan. 02, 1917

So mine was made around the time of the patent Grant, since the Application was late in 1916

Outlaw, That design looks like the very popular Stanley #700 corner vise. I wonder if that one was the original ?

KMS, That is the one you posted. I have bought a lot of vises from him. His dad buys stuff in the PA area and brings it down to NC to sell.

Fraggles, Thanks for the

I have added a trailer search alert to Craigslist. If someone is bold enough to steal then they should be dumb enough to list it for sale.

Good morning all. A few questions from the knowledgeable minds on this forum. A friend of mine saw the 600S that I had got and redid and decided that, he too, was in need of a large vise to restore :D He picked up this old Wilton No. 60 at an auction yesterday. It seems to be in fairly good shape for its age, I told him that it looked like an early 40's model because of the Pat Pend and Chicago, although I am no expert which is why I come here. I had him send me a pic of the date stamp and it came in with 12-30-66. That does not seem right to me since the vise matches one on Ebay (completed) that is a 1941.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1941-W...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Any ideas? Could Wilton have taken it in for repair and added a new key with a new warranty date? It's also missing the dust cover and I was curious what people have done about that. I saw the wilton parts website sells them for $45, but that seems steep to me.
The one picture of it at the auction has a lever hoist next to it. He picked the hoist up for me at $22. Couldn't beat that for a Yale 3-ton.

Picked this up this weekend. It's a Reed pipe vise No. 0. Seemed a bit out of the ordinary with a non opening yoke. I think it may have been part of a hand threading set. Besides being caked with dirt and grease I think it's in really good condition and should clean up well. I'll post more pic's when I getter all dolled up!

Any ideas?.

Since you're just learning about Wiltons at this time, you should read the thread about DATING them. You'll learn there are no Wiltons stamped 1941 (there was a war going on), so any vise with a date stamp is Post-WWII

Does anyone know if a Stanley sweetheart clamp-on vise model #743 was manufactured with replaceable jaws ?

Agree with you that a non-opening yoke for pipe vises is different. I did get one in Aug 2015 and the only markings on this pictured pipe vise is W M Co

Here are a few golden oldies to share. They are still in “as found” condition with a little liquid wrench applied to the moving parts today as I start to look at reconditioning.

- Simplex Gray 43S with 5” jaws

- Hollands 44 with 4” swivel jaws

- Reed 203 ½ with 3 ½” jaws

They are all in remarkably good condition, with good teeth left on the jaws and smooth operation…except for the swivelling jaw on the Hollands. Any tips on how to free the pin and swivel jaw up?

Yep, I thought that the minute I saw it. I have the later "block body" version and a buddy has I believe one of the early Stanley 700 versions - I'm not sure who came first, but Albert L. Wilson & Frank McGlinchy did get a patent in 1917, and Champion did use it. I wonder if Stanley bought them up? :dunno: - Pic of the old Stanley from the interwebs:

Edit: a better pic/angle:

And for those not familiar with the 700, the "Block Body" style

Hmm, the mystery deepens:

A Litco version clearly the same as mine:

CIMG5017.jpg

And another:

Hmmm, My Champion is marked "Pat. Applied for" so does thst make it the original or was it made by litco for Champion? :dunno:

Write, excellent iron.---Very nice collection.---Saves a lot of time when you only buy items that only need paint and not repairs.

On the Hollands.---Take out the slide, take off the base, and there should be a hole all the way through the top of the Static housing that the swivel pin is setting in.---Take a drift punch and give it a few raps to the bottom of the pin, but only after you have swamped it in penetrating oil.---I don't think your pin will be threaded.---Some pins are.

I have a #345B, and that's the way I broke mine loose.---Mine is a Morgan, but should be the same
mechanics in principal.
