What a great resto. I had to leave my jaws on my 634 and polish in place as I did not have the kit to get them unstuck. Your pipe jaws look great. I am trolling the web slowly on occasion, looking for NOS parts....I think I will be waiting a long time.
I have never seen a 634 - and there's only about 5 out there I have seen pictures of - with the swivel base or the original pipe jaws.

Yeah, they really REALLY didn't want to come off.

But I do a lot of restores and have yet to find a stuck fastener that doesn't respond to a bit of heat. Mind you, getting them hot was a task in itself!

The jaws I made are from some 30mm wide stock I happened to have lying around. I deliberately made them set back from being flush with the main jaws.

If I did it again, I'd make them bigger because as they are, they will only grip down to about an inch and a half diameter. I have considered extending them again by building them up at the back but have spent enough time on this project.

Got a few more vices to do yet. Thanks for the comments everyone. Its a great motivation not just to post but also to get on with the job.

^^ Late entry but I think it could well be!

Screwdriver - be sure to put a synopsis of the resto and that last pic on "the vises of garage journal" thread, too. Top stuff.

I remember you posting in the Vise thread a while ago and out of no where remembered to jot down some measurements for you today. I was only missing one jaw so I just whipped one together really quick and hardened it then remembered it was a double acting jaw at the front, so I needed a spacer attached to the back.

This measurement will do for the back jaws, I will try and find one for the front jaws, if not I will make one with the same measurements as the rears but double acting.

Also, great on the restoration job! You're much faster than I! I believe mine has been sitting idle for close to a year now... haha.

You've done a lovely job on the resto of the 634 :)

With regards to the swivel base, your vice is newer than the ones in the catalogue and I believe you can retrofit a swivel to it as it was common to some other vices of the era. I have a 633 in my restoration pile that came with a swivel, the markings on it indicate it fits the 633 and the 35 ..... I wonder if a 634 would take the swivel from a No 36.

Well I am more than willing to try!

Sensibly though, could you post a photo with some dimensions? Soon see if it would fit...

I can post a photo of the 633/35 base if you like, it will be too small for the 634. I don't have a swivel base for a 36 .......

Hang on a minute I do have a couple of Record 36's without swivels though so I could get the dimensions from the base of them. It will probably be a week before I can get to them though as I had an unfortunate incident with a shelf full of wood collapsing on to them :(

Seems the Irwin T6SB base will fit the No6,No8,No25 and No36 .... so if it matches the 634 as well you have a lot of potential candidates :)

BTW someone has made a rather rubbish video on that swivel base
