Good morning folks,
I encountered a mystery tool. I pride myself on being able to figure out the use of tools, but this one has me totally stumped. The top aluminum knurled piece (the smaller one above the aluminum handle) turns and will turn the gears at the bottom of the tool. So, what is this thing and what is it used for?:lol_hitti

good luck,
and thanks,

Another hint: The gear portion of the tool- the shaft attached to the gear on the bottom of the tool is hollow. It also has half of the shaft machined away, which might be a hint too.

It's obviously used to slip into a hole and turn a shaft at a 90 degree angle. Looks like the driven bevel gear has a place for something with a double tang to fit into it

Holy ****! I have that SAME mystery tool.

Except for two differences.
1) I picked mine up as a neat gizmo at a flea market for less than a buck, because it was rusted frozen (and has been soaking in stuff for years because of this, and because I haven't had the time to give it any attention), and
2) mine has a slotted screwdriver bit on the end.

You turn the knob on the back (while holding the handle), and it can turn a screw in an otherwise inaccessible place. But that's all I know.

Here's mine. If I ever get it unfrozen, I think there are more bits stored in the body under the brass cap. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1450234560.659330.jpg

Well, I will say that some of these thoughts are along the lines I was thinking. It does seem like it is made to turn something at 90 degrees to the main shaft. This might be for a screwdriver tip. Regarding the thought of it being a carb tool. I used to be an auto tech back when carbs were still popular and never saw it then, so I would be skeptical about that being the use, but some carbs had some real hard to reach adjustment screws so it is definitely possible. It does seem like it would be for a more delicate type of job like a carb adjustment tool.

Does that handle slide? Like a slide hammer? That handle doesn't look like it would be easy to twist by hand if you had any torque on it?

I think you've got it. Or at least the current version of it. I can't find the OEM on this particular one.

The big handle is fixed to the tube. The small knob turns the inner shaft, which turns the gears.

The big handle is hollow, and the knob side of it has a brass end cap (note where the cross-hatch knurling changes to straight lines). The end cap on mine has a hole that appears should line up with an off-center hole in the knob (though everything on mine is stuck). I believe more bits are stored inside the handle under the brass cap. I can hear them move around when I shake mine.
