These are pics of the shop with my new Rinnai EX22C LP installed. It is heating the 960 Sq ft shop quite nicely. I put the unit up on the pedestal to keep from beating the heck out of it with carts, etc. It took a 2.5" hole to install the vent. On the vent termination the exhaust goes out the short snout. Combustion air goes in the outer ring. The Core-ten siding is rusting nicely.

I was going to install the larger EX38C (13,200-36,500 LP), but chose the 22 (8,200-20,500 on LP). Here in the foothills of the Sierra it may get down in the teens, but rarely. Yesterday, the first day of operation, once up to temperature, the unit modulated down to a lower input, found its equilibrium set point and just hung there. Cabinet stays cool to the touch and it is quiet.

I have R19 & 30, double glazed windows. Real pleased with how the place is holding the heat. Turned the heat off at 8 last night. At 5:30 this morning it was 32 outside and 46 inside when the heat came back on.

In looking at the pic of the heater, it is kind of deceiving as to how it is mounted. The unit is not free standing. There is a surround which attaches the unit to the wall securely. You can kinda see the reflection of the surround in the sheet metal reflection.

Hey jack, looks like you have been busy getting the place in shape. I'm still in the sand box, will becoming home permanently in March or April? Been 2 years trying to find a contractor to build my garage/shop, still no joy! They want to build it their way, that won't work for me. I am picky and a perfectionist I know, but I also the guy who writes the check. So I'm planning on taking some time when I come home and doing it my self. All the best to you Jack and Merry Christmas ( I guess we can still say that). Send me an email if you have time. Cheers

Will the exhaust being that close to the sheet metal rust a normal pole barn metal siding? I know the exhaust is corrosive so I worry about it condensing on the cold sheet metal and making a mess.

No, it will not. The flue gases are being blown straight away from the building and there is an inducer fan in there to ensure air fuel mixture is correct. Also, you are looking at fairly low inputs. This one is a max of 21,500 btu. One of the good things on DV's is that the clearance to a door or window is 9" for an appliance of 50kbtu or less.
