Old Electric Switch

Just wondering if anyone knows of a source for an old switch like this. It's off of an old Enterprise Meat Grinder. Finished making sausage last nite and the switch is giving trouble. It is a double pole single throw but the toggle is a little larger than normal. I'm also looking for new brushes, they are a block about 7/16 wide by 1 1/4" long with just a hole and no attached wire.

The grinder came out of a small grocery in Ryderwood WA that my uncle owned, I got it about 30 years ago and it works great. Thanks.

Thank You, that is the exact switch even the same brand. The reason I didn't want to go with a regular switch is the brass cover just didn't look right with a regular size toggle.

Anyone know if drilling a hole in carbon brushes is hard to do? I can find close to the correct size but would need to drill a hole in them for the connection. It seems to me they would be very fragile.

I have filed down many a set of brushes to fit some obscure application. Can't say that I have ever had to drill a hole in one however. I would do it on a drill press, even pressure, carbide bit. Some carbon brushes are much more fragile than others.

Brush material is pretty soft. Normal bit is okay. Can even be tapped.

Thanks 404, I tried drilling part of one tonight and it seemed pretty easy. I am having trouble finding brushes, I had just guessed at the length .75, but I think that's a little short. I've looked at 3-4 websites and can't seem to find one that would work well. It looks like they would measure about .25 x .49 x .98.

If you can find an old time hardware store they sometimes have drawers of brushes. Also some motor repair places may have something.

This could be a candidate with a little filing.

I don't know if anyone cares about the history, but if you do, you can look closely and see that the eBay switch is actually a bit different... With an "A H&H" logo on the toggle instead of the "H&H". It's the same company, but after Hart & Hegeman merged with Arrow, they had quite a pool of trademarks that they assigned to different lines/divisions, or merged together as time went on. Yours also doesn't have the "plaster ears" of the eBay switch... Which was an option available as a separate switch part number at the time (8602-G), not just one switch part with the knock-off tabs to suit either application.


I have the H&H catalogs from 1928 and 1929, both of which show your switch. I also have a 1960 Arrow-Hart catalog, and the 8602 had distinctly changed by then, and is more modern than the eBay switch. So perhaps that gives you a rough idea of the age of the switch.

let's see a picture of the grinder when you get it back together...I've got an old Toledo Chopper I restored...thing's a beast...motor connects directly to a gearbox filled with 80/90 gear lube...

I steal the brushes out of treadmill motors and vacuum cleaners. and anything else that has them. I was surprised how expensive they can be to buy considering what they are..

Off-Street Parking Thank you that is really cool, I think you are probably right but I'll check and see if the "A" is there, it might be. I did order the one from E-bay and it has shipped so I should have it in a couple of days. The 8601 looks like it is the one, do they have a web site listed in the catalog?

gungatim I'll post some pics when it's done, because I have it all torn apart I'm going to re-paint it also. It is a beast, I'm guessing it weighs 70-80 lbs and the motor on this one also connects directly to a gearbox. The nice thing is in the fall after deer season you can drag the animal up close, get a hoof started and bam, hamburger.

Well I finally got the brushes in the mail yesterday, they were easy to drill and fit. Thanks for the great advice, I got the switch "The Cobbler" found and I got the brushes from the link "Justsam" posted. 404 gave me great advice on working with the carbon brush material and I thought the catalog "Off-Street Parking" posted was very interesting. I mentioned the catalog to my son and he sent me a link to an old catalog he has and had scanned and put online here. Here are some pics, I always forget to take before shots but believe me it was in rough shape, many coats of peeling paint a completely worn out switch and only half the brushes contacting the motor.
