Yesterday I picked up this wrench. It's a 1 1/4 in. combo from Dearborn - Malott Co., a company I never heard of. Does anybody know anything about this company? Google search didn't show anything. Wrench measures 17 3/4 in.

I have the same one in 1-1/8"

I am a Malott and I am interesting in collecting a set of these.

Dad figures these were made near Detroit in the late 1900s

Would you consider selling it?

Thanks

The pattern and finish is visually similar to the Blue Point combination wrenches of the '30s-early '40s.

Wrench measures 17 3/4 in.

Update - The 1-1/4" Blue Point is 16-1/2" long, so it's unlikely to have been struck on the same forging die.

It's been so long since I began this thread, I'm not even sure where I put the wrench......one of several toolboxes I guess.

Neil, I'm not interested in selling at this time but maybe later down the road, of course ridiculous offers will be seriously considered.....send me a PM.

Packard, could this be a Snap-On private label product?

In the early days, IIRC, Snap-On contracted with forging companies to make the Blue Point wrenches. From Alloy Artifacts:

Blue Point Tools

As their business grew and customers began requesting other types of tools, Snap-On decided to establish a second line of tools to meet the demand. By September 15, 1923 the Blue Point Tool Company had been formed in Chicago and the name "Blue Point" was being marked on tools. This date comes from the first use date listed on a 1929 trademark application for "Blue Point", which listed the company address as 14 East Jackson Street in Chicago. (Blue Point Tool seems to have shared the address of Snap-On's distribution company, the Motor Tool Specialty Company of Chicago.) Joseph Johnson signed the trademark application as the Treasurer for the company.

In the beginning Blue Point relied primarily on outside contractors to produce tools to its specifications, using the production facilities of various tool companies in Chicago and other areas. Establishing the identity of these contract companies would be of considerable interest to Snap-On and Blue Point collectors, but this has proven to be difficult for various reasons.

At the present time only two companies are known to have produced tools for Blue Point: the Forged Steel Products Company of Newport, Pennsylvania, and Milwaukee Tool & Forge (MTF) of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
