Had this one for a while but got increasingly annoyed at the play between the leadscrew and the dynamic jaw.
So, whilst I had it apart to install a bronze bush into the dynamic jaw I thought I'd try my hand at tarting it up a bit.
A Halfords paint can, some emery cloth and two 0-rings later:

This is what happens when you over tighten a vise, or improperly use a vise as a press. I just got off the phone with someone who was cranking away and sheared the main screw on a Parker 383-1/2. Lucky for him I have an extra main screw for him.

Dang. I have seen broken vises but it was never the screw that failed.

Same here. I was sure he was going to tell me it was a cheap Asian vise when he first said he broke the main screw.

Beautiful restoration. What kind of bushing do you install to fix the play?

Ok I have to ask. If you are using a vise for a press, how is that different from clamping any other object? If I can break a vise by turning the handle alone and not with a cheater or a hammer, what does it matter what's in the vise?

(3.)

This is a Wilton Swivel Jaw, I got from Drivesitfar.---He's a good fellow to do business with.---Thanks Drive.

(4.)

This is a Hartmann Vise.---4 1/2'' jaws,---49.8 lbs.

Nice pair of vises you picked up va. The Hartman is a nice find. Curious what the Wilton swivel jaw looks like underneath the swivel portion, what backs up the swivel jaw besides the swivel machined area. Does not look like it has a area behind the swivel portion like others. Noticed the Reed next to the Wilton and that one looks like it came from Jason, that was my first 4C jaw fit if it is the same vise.

Screwed: Fretters and Bagged and maybe a few others have just painted over BLO and i think Fretters even put BLO in his paint mixture with success.

Nuts: when you are using the vise as a press you don't stop once the piece is being held in place like a 3rd hand. the extra pressure pressing a part in place is where the vise can get broken in several ways. some guys have used their vises as presses for years without any problems and others keep breaking and welding and repairing or buying another vise after it breaks.

VA: you're a pretty decent fellow to deal with also and glad you are happy to add my big Wilton to your chain gang.

KM: yes that was Jason's 4c and it has the smooth jaws in it and i have the set of serated jaws sitting next to it. i still need to finish building the stand because it's too tall to put on my 1000 pound steel bench.

When you need more pressure than just the handle will produce, a cheater enters the picture and that's all she wrote...

Thank you.

I used a 3/4" long 3/4"x1/2" oil-filled bronze bush, filed down to conform to the hole in the dynamic jaw - which was also slightly off-centre. I then used reamers to provide clearance for the leadscrew.

Does anyone have a left over spray can of the rustoleum hammered verde green???

I've never seen a spray paint can selling for that much, even HVT high temp is at most $13 can. And it being a 1x use thing I can't do it, I could toss someone $10 if they got some left over from a wilton restore

JZ: I personally like the old Craftsman vises made by Rock Island maybe even better than my 519x's. granted a 3 inch wouldn't be calling my name to take a 2 hour drive, but the 6 inch one would that ** i think bought last month.

Civic: i heard you have to order 6 cans at a time to get that color because for some reason they don't stock it on the shelves any more. The $10 hammered rustoleum paint they sell is more than twice as nice in my experience than the $4-5 ones. it also has a rust preventative in it so you can paint right over rust if you choose to, but i'd still prep the surface even if just roughing it up. can you go in your GJ profile and maybe put in an area where you live because i see a guy in Portland, Oregon is actually selling a new can of the verde green on Craigslist and i'm betting there might be a member near you?

Is this style of Craftsman vise rare or desirable? It's a 3" wide 5160. Is this Rock Island made?

Craftsman%20vise_zpsqalbmzk6.jpg

As the others have said, you're correct - its made by Rock Island. I don't see these all that often - I most often see the stationary versions of this vise.

How much is it? I would jump on it for $60 or less.

I have the 4" version and it's a very nice vise. That style is made by rock island as others have said. I'd pay up to $60 as well depending on the condition.

Another clues is the rounded off main screw drive. It takes a lot more effort to produce in days when things weren't built down to a price and is a good indication of quality. Both in the engineering effort to produce it and typically, also in the quality of the steel and castings used.

Very true, the irony is that manufacturing capability has become much more advanced, yet we have gone back to basic, blocky shapes.

BTW, really like that multi angle mill vise. Looks very stout.

Gears or hydraulics verses screws.... Gears and hydraulics win every time . screws stretch, bend and break. Not saying that the pinion of a press can't be broken but it can certainly take much more pressure than a screw.

I'll consider my self lucky. West lakes ace, homo depot, lowes, Menards and wal-mart all carry it in the town I work in . Menards is the cheapest ... and have the best selection. West lakes carry a store brand, Rustoleum and Crylon . Tons of colors. Plus I used a buddy at the local auto tool and paint for custom stuff. Now that stuff can get pricey . Depending on the mix, enamel or epoxy it can get up to 20 bucks when put into a rattle can.
