So I have been toying with getting a mini split system online and setting it and running the lines and electric. I am overloaded with stuff to do in the garage.

When i was looking up prices on systems home depots ad came up and they said they would send out a rep and price up.

I said what the hell and let them come out

I met the guy last night and they only supply mitsubishi.

Long story short he had prices on his she for a 30k 20 seer unit with a ceiling cassette and a wall mount list prices were $13,300!

I stopped him when I saw prices and said if those are the prices I will stop you because I don't have 13k to drop heat and a in my garage.

He got on the phone to his boss and came back and said they were short on work and said if he could do it before next Wednesday they could do it for 8500 tax included and home Depot would do 24 months 0 percent and a 12 year parts and labor warranty. That part is nice.

Actually this price was for a floor mount unit which I would change out for a wall mount and probably knock off another 1000.

Drop 5 k instantly what a joke right?

Anyway I was about to get an LG from acwholesalers for 3000 plus another 500 to 800 for line sets and mount. I only get a 7 year parts warranty.

I can get the connections and pump down done for under 1000 all day right? I know guys on here b get 250 to 300 regularly.

Thoughts?

I was thinking about offering 6000 for his 8500 system with the floor mount traded out for a wall mount.

So basically 6000 on a 7500 "discounted" price from them.

Otherwise I would have 4500 max in the LG system purchased and installed.

Anyone got 2 cents on this?

I did all of the install work on mine, except for getting an HVAC tech to check pressures, pull a vacuum, etc.

I bought a 12k LG inverter heat pump off ebay. New in box with water damaged package, contents perfect. Included line set and wire from outside to inside units. $950 delivered.

I ran the wire and lines up through the wall rather than on the surface since I had it open.cut and flared lines, hooked everything up.
Called a local contractor for a nitrogen pressure check, vacuum and startup. One hour labor call = $85!

Bargains are out there, just be patient.

You didn't say exactly what your looking for. (It sounds like a dual zone unit?)

I have said this before - I really like eComfort, they make it real easy

For example - here is their page for 30k units (if your sure thats what you need, otherwise they can spec it for you)
http://www.ecomfort.com/cooling/wall-mounted-mini-split-heat-pumps.html

So there #2 seller in this size is a dual zone LG at $2,6795. Click on one of the packages and then on the next page you will see a series of tabs - click on Accessories and they will have the linesets, connector cable, disconnect box, etc. They make it real easy and their prices are very reasonble

So your major costs on top of the base unit is going to be for the linesets and control wire. Figure out what you need and go from there. I had about $1,200 in costs on top of the "base package" which includes everything - some tools I bought and $300 startup service from a HVAC contractor) So the complete total for me was right around $4,400 on a $3,200 Mr Slim package with me doing most of the work. Your $4,500 DIY estimate sounds very reasonable, how much is it worth to YOU to have them install it.

Here is my 24k dual zone Mr Slim I bought from them a year ago. Nicely packaged and delivered right into my garage for free

I had a 30k unit with two heads, a wall mount and a floor mount installed in my house this fall by a Mitsubishi Diamond contractor. They had to pull power all the way across the house, and one of the linesets had to go all the way across the house too. They charged me much less than your quote. Granted, I had a lot of other work done at the time, and I'm sure prices vary by region but my opinion is you should get another quote.
$8500 will buy a lot of the packaged systems targeted towards DIY that we see other forum users discuss.

Get the linesets from a local plumbing/hvac store, I have no idea how they get away with charging that much online. I bought insulated linesets for about $2/ft.

For the wire, you simply need insulated 4 wire, similar to thermostat wire, but the insulation is important. Usually they spec 14 to 18 gauge. Some of the linesets come with the wire.

Go with standard wall mount indoor units, when you switch to the other options, such as the ceiling register or one of those faux picture frames, the efficiency is lowered signifcantly. If you get snow, I'd go wall mount on the outdoor unit. Just make sure you pay attention to the spacing off the wall. I thought it was a bit conservative when I first looked at the specs, but once you get the thing running, you'll see how much air it moves and understand.

Indoor units make quite a bit of water in the summer, outdoor units make quite a bit in the winter.

Be prepared for output to far exceed what most hvac load calcs says will work.

I am doing it on my own. I did price the LG from acwholesalers and ecomfort and acwholesalers was 300 dollars cheaper on the same 30k dual head unit.

I want to do a ceiling cassette. How much less efficient is that?

In the ecomfort link above it seems I can get a Mitsubishi for 800 to 1000 more than an LG or another brand. I am thinking about going that direction if within that margin.

Then I just need to get lines etc locally.

I am not going to have the home Depot guys do the install.

If you do the ceiling cassette make sure you understand the service requirements of that evaporator. It varies by manuf and model. Leave easy access from top and bottom.

I am not an expert - but when I was doing my research - it was highly recommended NOT TO USE something like "insulated 4 wire, similar to thermostat wire"

I bit the bullet and bought what I considered to be a 'top of the line' unit, and I certainly wasn't going to cheap on the control cable... The recommended Honeywell 14/4 Connecting Wire was around $1.65 per foot.

This pdf indicates "the National Electric Code prohibits the use of flexible
cords for mini split installations."
https://www.honeywellcable.com/CatalogDocuments/LMSCBLIFDMiniSplit_final.pdf

Not all linesets are the same. For example eComfort also carries Kamco soft copper lines, which are supposed to be easier to bend - so again I would make sure your comparing apples to apples. Also - having a pallet delivered to your doorstep with everything you need sure beats chasing parts all over town, especially if your plate is already full

Thanks for the insight.

I priced out what I needed from several different vendors. I had heard good things about eComfort on this forum and others and I really wanted to buy everything from one source. I was in email contact with one of their sales people because I had questions (she was very helpfull) and when it was time to buy I asked if they could meet my 'package price' from parting things out and she did in fact give me a discount that made it worthwhile for me.

Again wiring requirements vary by manuf. my Fujitsu's use 14-3 from the condenser to the evaporator. That is 3 conductors plus the ground. On the terminal strip it is 1,2. &3. 1&2 are legs of 220. 3 is communication and it feeds through 2 for that circuit. I think LG uses low voltage wiring, but am not sure.

I like it a lot. PM me to come over to see it if you want.
Good to hear. Thanks for the gracious offer. I have seen one and they are attractive and I have read a few reviews which seem to be positive.

Amen brother to the running around town to save a little. Having it all dropped at once is nice.

I agree on hearing good things here about ec9mfort but I was shocked at how much cheaper acwholesalers was and the guy at acwholesalers has been very responsive much faster than ecomfort on quote turnaround and he just offered me another 120 off.

Pricing it all today and trying to get this decision made.

I never come in on a thread to bash a company someone is considering using. But in this case, i have to point something out.

Google ac wholesalers and check the THIRTY SIX google reviews which average 1.1 rating. Be very careful. These people may be great to deal with and maybe someone trolled the google reviews. Just be careful.

I bought my unit from acwholesalers - the only niggle was that they are a bit liberal in their meaning of "in stock" - it took a good week or two for them to get it after I ordered it, and then they shipped. Outside of that, everything was exactly as promised and no complaints.

I will search that....not good. They have been much more responsive to date than ecomfort. But the sale hasn't been completed yet. Maybe that changes after I give cc info

Ive used equipment on jobs in nebraska and california over the years that Ive bought from ecomfort.com,they were decent to deal with for the most part.
I bought a goodman package unit from an online place called ingrams water and air 2-3 years ago, never again.
Promised it would be in town withing 9 days delivered to my friends grocery store where it was going to be installed.
Closer to 5 weeks later the wrong unit finally shows up,but I installed the damn thing anyway because they had already lost so much freaking produce waiting for the pos to arrive!
Thats right,Ingrams water and air ***** BIG ****! Feel free to quote me on that.;)

That's cheap I am pretty much looking at 2200 for the gree type compressor to 4000 to 4500 for a mid level mitsu.

LG is in the middle at 2700 to 3k.

Decisions decisions.....

I bought mine from ACWholesalers in Aug 2014. I did a lot of research...6 months and probably well over 100 hours researching how it all works, how to install, which units are best, etc. Mitsubishi was generally regarded as top of the line; their units generally last trouble-free longer than most others.

Fujitsu and Daiken were the other two reputable manufacturers. I would only go with a different brand if it was a significant cost savings.

Had a quote to install my 2 ton mr slim for $7600. Bought the unit and all accessories, vacuum pump, gauges, nitrogen filled bottle, everything for around $3500 and did my research. got a $600 credit from my electric co-op.

Keep in mind installing it yourself will eliminate any warranty. I figured I could do it 3 times for the price the pros want. I couldn't find anyone local to help, but I didn't look real hard as I have trouble trusting someone. I read that most pros won't even do a nitrogen purge, which I wanted done. I spent the money and got a good micron gauge for the pump down, also.

I oversized my wire. Communication wire was supposed to be 14 ga and voltage to the breaker was 12. I used 12 and 10 just to be safe.

I have the wall mounted unit in the basement and I spent around $5000 for the install and everything. Granted the warranty wasn't that great, but it has been 3 years and it still runs like a top. I would highly recommend the Mitsubishi system versus the LG. I have used both and am much happier with the Mitsubishi.

Here's the quote I received for a dual unit for my addition. I ended up ordering it from ecomfort and installing it myself for less than $3000. All the other quotes were over $7000. One was over $8000.

I had Home Depit give me a price on a new roof....tear off and replace....$15,000. We were looking at $1,500 in shingles. I was able to get it done for $4,500. HD is not your friend with their estimates.

Just throwing out a guess, looked it up once but forget exactly.

On a 27 seer unit package, using the ceiling cassette would take it down to like 18-19 seer.

Supplyhouse.com is a pretty good site to get them, formerly pexsupply.com I believe.

Got it checking them now.

I also have figure a way to just do two wall mounts and keep it simple which is not in my nature for some reason.
