Vintage VW 20x24 Pole Barn Build

Well I've been lurking on here for a few months as I've started on my own Frankenstein pole barn to a garage conversion. Looking back I probably should have knocked it down and started fresh, but I've learned a lot on the adventure! Still a lot to do but it's getting there little by little.

- Stripped the old plywood roof and walls
- Trenched a 12"x12" footer, set poles for 16' lean to extension
- Poured concrete
- Framed and added lean to roof extension.
- Installed new corrugated steel roofing.
- Added extra wall framing 2x4's, and 2x6's
- Ran 100 amp service.
- Currently installing Hardie Plank siding.

Thanks....still need to post pics of my toys. Pretty much a vintage VW guy. Based on other posts I don't think I'm alone in that area!

Looking good !! Also Welcome to GJ.

I'm guessing you're in Florida by the palm trees . . . . . AND . . . and do I spy hurricane straps connecting the roof rafters ??? ;)

Update GJ Profile with your location.

Thanks....you are correct I am in Florida! I have added a lot of improvementso including strapping and other framing additions. I figured it's already survived several direct hurricane hits so I'm just making it better.

So one more wall done. Only have the front wall to install siding on. I actually pre-cut it all so it should go up fast. Hardie Plank is a nice product, but man is it messy and labor intensive to install! Soon my little bug will have a new home.

It looks like you have 2 8' doors on the 20' side. Is that correct? 20x24 is all I can fit into my back yard, and that's only if the city will issue a permit. I plan on putting one 12' wide door on the north 20' side 1 foot from the east wall to maximise the useful space that is not part of the door. As far VW's go, I've never had one but I think they're interesting little machines. A while back there was someone running around here locally with one painted to look like Herbie.

Yes, the framing is for 8'x8' doors, but they are on the 24' side of the building. I spaced the door openings 2' from the corners and allowed 4' between the doors as there are load bearing posts in the center of the building. Since my door openings are small I figured I could still squeeze around a parked car.

So made some more progress. The walls are enclosed for the exception of the last foot on the front wall where the lean to connects. Does anyone have any suggestions on a clean way to wall this portion in? I've been kicking around various ideas and knew it was going to be a funky area to do from the beginning.....my buddy Wall-E only offered moral support!

Alright...well it's been a while since my last upddate but I've been making progress little by little. I finished all the siding which was much more labor intensive than I thought it would be. I also added a driveway (asphalt millings), and with the help of an electrician buddy we installed a total of 16 LED lights. My choice on the lighting using high hats with LED retrofit bulbs was based on the overall price and also the fact that I didnt want to lose anymore celing space. So far I am very pleased with how it looks. Right now I am in the process of painting and will post pics when done with all that.

So I am finally nearing the completion and finished the exterior trim, and interior paint and floor. All I have left is to build the barn doors.

Also picked this guy up from the trash. A good clean and repaint and she'll be good!

So been busy with work but finally managed to get the cabinet restored and another shelf that was headed for the trash. Started building the barn doors. They are time consuming to make but I wanted them to be strong. Slowly making progress...Hopefully I'll be done pretty soon!

Finally finished building my bi-fold barn doors. Now its time to start moving everything over. The rest of the shop is so nice looking I realized how grungy my old workbench, vise, and drill press look! May have to treat them to some new paint now. Still have a lot of tools to move over but at least everything is secured and I can take my time.

Thanks...been a lot of effort but well worth it. Yeah I was thinking the same thing on the bench. It is a working shop and I'd hate to pretty everything up just to make it look bad in a few months of use. The vise is original and the only treatment I have ever given it is a good WD-40 wipedown every now and then. Poor thing has hardly any paint left on it!

Just looking through your pics again, may be some colour co ordination with some of your gear like the vise, drill press, grinder stand and grinder works well as far blending things in goes??

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out for you.

Regards

I was thinking the same thing. I have seen a lot of people use this particular Rustoleum paint to do a lot of equipment. I like the vintage era looking color and finish. Only down side is I have to order a case of 6 cans as no stores locally carry it. Still cheap though so I was thinking of just doing it.

Well I've been pretty busy getting stuff moved in. To my surprise I was able to get my car lift in and raise my bug to full height. So I'm happy I can get underneath it to work. My bus is my next project. Started restoring it and modernizing it a few years ago....time to get going on it again!
