I'm looking to order an 8'x8' roll up garage door to install myself. It needs to be a reverse roll with hood for install on the exterior. Anyone know of a good supplier other than Rollupdoorsdirect? They seem to have the market cornered, but shipping is outrageous. $300 shipping on a $500 door!

I would suggest looking up a local garage door company. We have one here locally that is excellent and the prices installed made me not want to DIY it. And the quality of the door is excellent, made in USA, etc. They were extremely helpful.

I'll check into that. Every once in a while that happens. I get so focused on installing it myself, that I don't realize someone else can do it for cheaper.

Good advice.

Ouch. I just got two quotes from installers in DC. One was $3,200 the other was $3,050. I think the DIY install suits me better

WOW! That is high. I don't blame you. I paid $1400 installed for a 9x16 steel insulated door. I guess prices in the District are a bit higher based on the fact that politicians live their?

I'm in Loudoun Co., VA. I just (Monday) ordered a 12x10 roll up door from steeldoordepot.com. It's a Janus 3652 with insulation, and delivered price was about $500 less than the best quotes I could get from the other online sites ($1700 vs $2200). The delivery part of that was about $389 (other sites were quoting $420 and up for delivery alone). Call the number on their site and talk to Sue. Great customer service.

You can get the Janus door configured for outside mounting, but you need to buy the extra hood that covers the door.

Edit: You can't compare door prices without knowing the exact manufacturer and model. I paid extra for the 3652 because it is wind-rated. It has locking tabs inside the tracks that keep the door from being blown in by high winds. Other models without that feature are much less expensive.

Menards.....order it in just about any color you want

Made by Ideal Doors

My 4'x10' rollup was $199, plus I got 11% rebate on it

Installed it on my shed in under 15 minutes

I'll second Menards.

I had one custom sized for a 1942 garage I rebuilt to store my boat. I don't remember the price, but it was low and the quality of the Ideal door was ok for my needs.

I bought one a while back for my shed from Trac•Rite . I can't remember how much it was, but it was much cheaper than a prehung double steel door. I had it shipped to a freight terminal and I picked it up there. Quality is excellent.

I would recommend checking with a local co. Pull up to their dock, and off you go, no shipping BS. Something to be said about going local in case of any Warranty issues. That's what I do!

Intregway... I didn't realize you could buy roll up doors at Menards. Has anyone ever seen one installed on a residential attached garage before? I have a completely rotted away garbage wooden overhead door on rails. My garage has like a 7ft ceiling so there's no way to put an opener in it and the rails really cut down on storage space in the already tiny garage. A roll up would be pretty nice actually.

Thanks. They look to be much cheaper.

I am performing a few construction contracts for a local government entity. Part of both projects, includes a new slab pour out and metal building erection. On one of the projects, I am buying the door from the metal building supplier, which ultimately is made & distributed by DBCI. The other unit I am purchasing the doors from Overhead Door (OD).

There is a decent cost savings using DBCI over OD, although I think the quality is a little better with OD.

If you have a local metal building supplier, you might check with them for some pricing and options. In the case of DBCI, they are pushed by local independent garage door companies. You can call DBCI to see if they have a local distributor/installer or check into a direct ship option.

I don't know how you would put an opener on the Ideal door from Menards.

They're a pretty light duty door, but work well for a storage building. Sort of noisw opening and closing.

Most Menards stores have (or had) a small display.

I think you can order custom sized conventional doors there also.
