Hey guys I'm building a 28'x32' next year, stick frame construction. I'm undecided on what I should do about shop doors, do I have two 10' doors or a single wide. I will have my hoist and an open bay for my race car so it is imperative that I can get vehicles into both bays in the shop.

With two single doors; you will have a smaller opening for the heat in your garage to escape, your car will often be on the other side of the garage from where you want or on one side when you want it in the center.
They make car dollies to enable you to shuffle your cars around just like planes on a flight deck.
A double wide door will need only one opener and will not have that obstructing center pilar.

Good points, especially the heat issue, I did not concider it. As far as moving the car it's mobile and won't need the hoist much. No matter what I decide on I will have a shaft mounted opener(s).

To my way of thinking it is a matter of personal preference. I personally like one wide door rather than two smaller ones, but there are no doubt several good reasons for having two smaller doors.

Most of the heat escapes around the circumference of my doors, so 2 would be harder to heat than a single.

Really depends if you will have one of those 2 doors as TALLER for anything that won't fit for "normal" sized door. That's the big plus for 2 doors . . . . one 10 ft wide and normal height, and one 10 ft or 12 ft wide and TALLER.

However, I do like the idea of one large door like 18 ft wide. I'd sure go full 8 ft tall, or even better to have it 5 panels high if possible. You know it's the "GJ Way" . . . . bigger, taller, better, etc !!!!! :D

I like one big door simply so you don't have to go around that center post between the two doors.

I have more questions than answers.
If your going with a shaft drive opener and hoist go with the largest radius track of add a high lift to raise the door as close to the ceiling as you can.

As to single versus double each has it's advantages and disadvantages that have been mentioned here. The only thing not mentioned so far is curb appeal, which is very subjective as well. Right now I have 3 10x8's. My next shop will have a 20x10 and 14x14 and a couple 10x8's as well. All based on what I will be using it for.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to have to discuss with my builder my options for this as well. Another factor I need to think of is getting my trailer backed up to the door to unload/load my car. I would imagine the sight lines for a wider door would be easier to back up to then a 10' wide door. My trailer is a 28' enclosed and seeing around it can be challenging. Also if I go with a single door then I can have the man door on the front of the shop instead of the side with the double door, that is more appealing to me for sure.

I vote for the 2 doors.
Mostly for the flexability, but for the other reasons said also.

If you are going to be unloading your race car to go onto the hoist you are going to need to align it with the hoist, so a wide door is of no advantage.

I put a 10Wx8H door on my shop and have no problems with it.
The extra height was more important than width.
I can get vans with ladder racks inside.

10 feet is the width of the older 2 lane blacktops through out the country.
People can live with them.

I like the look of the (2) 10' doors, but the single door seems more practical.
