Hmm a couple of threads skirted the topics, but never really did the "Show Us" thing that I found...

I'd say go for it Top!

Joe: interesting vise. which xy table did you keep or did you keep just a basic vise for your drill press?

Santa brought me a basic XY table that I then mounted my double swivel Palmgren vise on. i"m selling my Craftsmasn rotary xy table as it is now redundant.

That machinist vise is really great and the nicest I've seen.

Top: even if Outlaw finds there is an Axe thread i'm guessing the original OP isn't a member still or the thread hasn't had a post on it for a very long time because i can't remember one. my Gramps was a logger so i would have noticed an axe thread since it was one of his favorite tools.

it's easy to start a thread and a little harder to keep one going. just go into vintage tool section and click on start a thread and just a like a post. if you want to save a few of the first few posts for say axe companies and other things just make another post that you can edit later saying reserved and you can make a post every 30 seconds. best to do one with several reserved posts when it's quite here like late or early in the day.

take a look at a few of the threads i started like Vise Repair 101, Blacksmith vises 101 or any of them by other members. sometimes you think you have a great idea and it doesn't go anywhere and other ideas gain interest and will go strong like this thread.

PM me or email me if you need help. i would have PM'd you, but since you are a fairly active member asking how to start a thread i thought others might like to know because there are plenty of good subjects we can talk about to learn more or teach others on.

Joe: good to know you happy with your Drill press vises. you've had some amazing ones come your way this year. you might need to find one like Fraggles has if any are here in the US for those odd shaped pieces.

Van: cool looking old Record vice. nicely done

Climb: if that is your grinder i'd be proud to own one that looks that nice. how many of those vises will find a home on your bench?

That picture of the grinder is not mine, but I am in the process of restoring 2 just like it. I believe the Reed and the C1 are the keepers in this lot.

After having done the little Fuller I caught my Record looking jealously at it, so had a go at that one as well.

A previous owner thought that tightening the jaws was best done with the help of a hammer - and a cheater bar. Also hacksawing into the jaws and inserts seemed like a good idea too. They unfortunately didn’t clean up very well.

Just needs a new set of jaw insert screws now.

Happy New Year!

Really nice little vise. Great resto!

I got this vise as a gift for Christmas. I thought "Oh thats nice, a machinist vise" nothing special. THEN I began to clean it up. Wow, this is cool....look at the pics. The slide mechanism is spring loaded. I push down on the little slide and move the handle to the appropriate clip. Very ingenious.

That's a sweet quick action vise Joe!

Joe, nice Christmas present, the grinding vise you have was built by it's owner I bet. I would have liked to see a picture of underneath. If you had a squareness checker you would be surprised to see how accurate the vise is made. It would not surprise me to see .0003 accuracy making it a excellent surface grinding vise. I own many vises but my favorite is my Herman Schmidt, it makes me look good after surface grinding my work.

I think you're the first machinist I've seen that got his Herman Schmidt out of the box it came in.

Kevin, here's your bottom shot. Yes it has super tight tolerances. It was a challenge to clean the surface rust off and not affect the tight tolerances it has. When I assembled it after cleaning I couldn't get it to work until I added a very light coat of 5W oil. I should also note that it was a vise I received on Christmas and not a Christmas present if that makes sense. I clarify that because i will be selling it and only an a hole would sell a Christmas present. Sorr of like saying that she's my friens, and she's a girl but shes not my girlfriend.

Oh, and I got that handle tou made me mounted on the vise. Heated it and peened it myseld. Thanks.

Early Vise Grip? Says ARS on one side and I can't make out the other, looks like Germany?

View media item 56248
Note the spring steel piece to open the jaws as you back off the wingnut.

View media item 56250
So you can get a good idea of the size, I've included the standard comparison 12oz Bud Light

View media item 56246
Note the Bud can is unopened. This can is for vise comparisons only.

It is what I have always known as a hand vise. Can be used for anything you want. I use one for holding small parts when I don't want to get to close to grinding or buffing wheels etc. It is generally shaped so that it can be clamped in a regular vise whilst holding a smaller part. Sorry, I can't help with maker but most seem to be German.

Guys:
I'm hoping to pick up a big Chas. Parker tomorrow. That'll be my first Parker.
The seller says its too heavy to pick up which is of course a very interesting thing to hear!
Will I have any problem opening the jaws all the way and separating the beast into two more manageable chunks? Is there a safety retainer or something like that? Might be a 956 model.

You can unscrew the dynamic from the body using the screw.....OR, pull the spindle collar off, unwind the screw then slide the dynamic out of the body....Your choice, just different ways to accomplish the same thing.....If you're taking a buddy along the 2 of you can move anything at least through a 975.....I can carry and lower mine, but to raise it I pull the dynamic off......

So this AM I tried to contact the seller of an Athol vise on CL to purchase his vise. He just responded that someone who collects and restores vises just contacted him and said since it was a swivel jaw vise, he was selling it too cheap. Anybody on here?

What a dastardly deed! If it was anybody here, I seriously doubt that he would confess. But if he reads this, I hope he/she feels guilty. Karma is a *****!

That's a switch; I sometimes get Emails from self appointed "CL Guardians" that I don't know how hard it is to sell what I have/I'm asking WAY too much $$/ I should sell to them at a MUCH lower price/I'l never sell that since.... ad nausium.

People are weird; do they really think that since it is it the internet they can play these games and not be seen through? :dunno:

I have to force myself not to unload on them; one has hit me up 5-6 times. a real "character" :withstupi:tard:

what hemi said to taking the Parker apart for
Transport. A 975 weighs about 105lbs and a 976 weighs about 157lbs. When I bought my Parker 975, I just unscrewed the dynamic and then carried it out in 2 pieces. I wasn't going to walk up the stairs and through a house of crazed estate sale buyers with a 100+lb vise in one piece. lol around the garage, I'll move the 975 in one piece.

I saw the ad yesterday...The pictures were terrible.....you could barely make out that it was a swivel jaw......I think sometimes people post crappy photos to conceal defects.....A while ago I asked a seller to send me better photos....That was the last I heard from him.....

Outlaw, Drives, DG, Fretters, CW et al.,

Cheers for the nice comments on the Parkinsons Ball base and SEVO :) I'm very pleased with the condition they both are in.

Fretters
Yes, the ball base vice has a Parkinsons "Handy" Made in England sticker. :)

The slide dimentions and leadscrew are identical to the Handy No.1.

When you say that my Ball base could be an earlier version, I'm assuming that this is because of the "T-bar" instead of the flip type cam handle and absence of " Type A" cast on body?

Dutch and CW, I'll keep an eye out for a Ball base and SEVO, respectively for you. :)

VanSteel That 74 looks very nice. Now you need an Imp and 75 for the complete set

Yup. I think CW worked it out from the catalogues that your type was the earliest version, (is the riser machined or rough cast just below the ball on the base, btw?), with the Type A coming later. The Type A did come with that T bar lever and the flip lever, if I recall correctly, though I seem to recall CW mentioned the T bar seemed slightly different on the later type.

Well Happy New Year everyone!

And to start it off, an unusual one for the Record folks:
image.jpg

No. 7 size is not a common one I have seen. 84 pounds says the No. 16 catalog. On kijiji in Toronto.

That must be a man without a beer can. Keys are poor substitutes for size comparisons.

Maybe so...but the monkey paw key fob rocks! :rocker:

(this space reserved for pics of the Parker 956 I just brought home!

Shift: Just catching your breath? sounds like a BIG UN. better take up a couple posts full of pics. did you carry it in one piece or pull out the dynamic?

ALL: not that time is running out, but i thought an European Vice of the Year for 2015 should be included in that thread's nominees so post up a few of your favorites. CW we still need a few pictures posted there of your Parkinson vice rack if you have time.

Drives:
I didn't even consider bringing it home in one piece! Online sources have its weight at 130#.
Plus, cranking the dynamic all the way out gives me a chance to check for binding and to inspect the acme screw and the nut before I hand over the cash.
I will need two new threaded handle balls but otherwise it looks pretty good.
