I'm guessing a complete 5197.

Fretters got it right.
Here is the story...
The whole vise was listed at $80 which I thought was almost a YS price, so I made plans to drive an hour in LA traffic to pick it up. Then the guy texts me to say sorry but his son had promised it to somebody before I responded. Next day I get a text saying the guy scratched but he was raising the price to $120.
I got a bad vibe from the whole deal and decided to walk away. He would only send me one low res photo. Another bad sign.

:spit: Yeah, like those grow on trees!

One of my minions bought a 5197 for $ 80 sans base. He wants to move it. He's in Boston. If anyone wants it I think I can get it sold to you at 150 plus shipping. Pm me if interested.

Now i figure there has to be a base somewhere considering how many of these ive seen with broken jaw supports.

My Boston minion sent me these pics of a 5" simplex and 6" Reed he just bought. Got both vises AND a 150# anvil, all 3 for $380. I'm passing but he is the man!

DIF, was it you who was after some family photo's of vices? Seem to recall mention of it in one thread somewhere, so took some vague photo's of some of the vices whilst I was out in the shed finishing blacking that stand.

Fretters: yes. family photos for that vise of the year award of 2015 thread. Get has posted most of his and VA is trying to find time when his wife is shopping to take pictures of his chain gang. It would take me another year to get mine in one location or even in my own state. others can post up theirs if they want to.

post them here too and how's the Burgandy family color holding up?????

Hemi have you built the bigger shelf yet?

Joe: did you want to enter any of your shiny gems you haven't already mentioned?

Balane and Autopts: i don't think I've seen any of yours over on that other thread so post up a few if you have time. Balane I'd nominate that little Athol but i forgot to save pictures so post a few if you still have them for me if you are available?

I'm on the brink of getting it started.....Our last holiday house guest is leaving in the morning....My wife returns to work tomorrow too.....So, with everyone out of my hair I can get back to my shelving project......I have all the lumber and hardware so it is just a matter of construction.....I just acquired a couple Charles Parkers.....A mint 973-1/2G and a nice 973-1/2........The latter arrived via USPS in a rectangular plastic vessel about the size of a 5 gallon pail......The lid was taped on with black electrical tape.....There was no padding inside the container; only the 973-1/2 vise standing on its nose.....My mailperson couldn't believe how it was shipped to me:bounce:.....But, it arrived undamaged:rocker:

I'll fish the container out of the garbage tomorrow and photograph how it was shipped......
Hemi

Count me in on the list of people interested in seeing that evidence. :)
I once received an order of 4 heavy duty 3 inch swivel casters that were just loose rattling around in a box that wasn't even a new box. One corner was so blown out that there were only 3 casters when it got to my house.

So I'm new here, but I found this vise on our local kijiji.

in case the pictures aren't clear, all it says is " 8" Jaw, Made in USA", and above that the number 1780.

It looks like one of the wilton tradesman vises but you guys are the experts. I coughed up $40 for it. Then after attempting to lift it got my wife to come and help me... then the guy who sold it to me grabbed the other end... it's massive and heavy, and I kid of course but you get the point. It's got to be nearly 80lbs.

One of the jaws isn't the right one for the vise but otherwise it's in good shape, moves well, and looks like it just needs some love. I assume I can find a replacement jaw of some kind. So any ideas vise guys?

Jazz1: Welcome to the thread. Good price on those small vises. They should be fun spiff up projects. I'm not familiar with Smart 7-11 (love the name though). RAE is one I have been lusting after except I want one of the Record style models. They don't show up often in the US. I live close to the border so I can hope. What is that little one that is mounted to the front of your bench? It looks like a miniature leg vise made of metal. Very intriguing. I've been to Thunder Bay a few times. Nice area, but I hope you have a heated shop. Again, welcome to the vise thread.

Jazz1: Hey thanks. The second picture of that vise cleared something up for me. There has been a similar vise for sale around here. From the picture of it I couldn't quite imagine how it was used. It looks to be 6 inch version of yours.

More hand vise: Two weeks ago I picked up this hand vise at the same estate sale where I got the Parker 239X with the still unidentified dingus attached. I got the hand vise as a curiosity not thinking that I would ever use it which is why I didn’t post it. Lo and behold, there was a run on hand vise posts and after reading them I thought of something I could use it for. In addition to vises, I also restore hand saws, specifically back saws. Here is the hand vise clamped in a woodworker’s vise and holding a nut and screw from a tote (handle to non-woodworkers) of a J.H. Swift & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield tenon saw. I had to do some thread repair on the screw and some polishing on the ends that show. It was a perfect use for the hand vise. By the way, the funny looking nut on the screw is called a split-nut and is generally a sign of age. This kind of nut wasn’t used for very many years into the 20th century.

Pics!... Please!

I can't believe either survived the trip!

All
Attached are photos of the Parker 973-1/2 I bought on EBay....Seller shipped it to me in the plastic container that you see....I didn't damage the container after receiving it; I took the lid off and removed the vise.....The photo of the vise in the container is exactly as I received it.....Absolutely no padding at all.....Surprisingly the vise sustained no damage...Also shown is the vise sitting with some of my vise family.....

(I'm speechless...)

Edit: My first thought was that the cost of all that tape approached the cost of postage!
Then I started imagining what you will write in the 80 characters allowed for seller feedback.

Looking at getting an old vise from CL. There are two, one is bad and the other looks to have the original finish, but not that great looking. Complete and uniform, but not nice. An easy tear down and degease would be in order... But what is the most durable paint? Not concerned with proper color etc, just want a durable finish.

Not sure if its a powder coat ( I doubt ) or a paint finish. One vise is an Athol and one is a Wilton

Perhaps if you tell us more about what you plan to do with the vise we can be more helpful.
Personally, I think the best finish is no paint at all but just strip it down to bare metal and apply a few coats of boiled linseed oil (known by the abbreviation BLO)
If you don't do welding or splashing it with solvents, there are paints that will hold up pretty well. Just depends on your standards of appearance for your working vise.

The Burgundy is holding up fine. :) Not as impressive a collection as the likes of some on here have, :D but some photo's of most of my collection. I just tend to buy what takes my personal fancy, with no intention of selling any on, hence it being a smaller collection.

You could post a link so we could see the vise and size. Both are or were great makers but both made different grades of vise's as well. It would also help if you could explain a bit what you plan to do with the vise. I put a variety of finishes on mine .

Hemi, again I say, you need to purchase a lottery ticket NOW!---Strike while the iron is hot.

Bookies would have put the odds of safe arrival at 300 to 1.

That's classic packaging! I've never seen something like it. With all that tape to hold it closed I would have thought the guy would have filled it with a bottle of expanding foam insulation. Lol

Hemi: I agree with the rest of the guys. he spent $10 worth of tape so that must have been the trick. WOW hard to believe that made it across the street. good luck with the new shelving unit for your family too.

Loyd: it's hard to tell what exactly the weld was for or if there is really a crack under the jaw or welds. my guess is the screws are stripped and the owner was a better welder than a machinist so he opted for the welds. since that is a pretty big vise even if the screw, swivel base and vise nut are good it's worth a few bucks as a parts vise. and if the jaws just need to be replaced it's a valuable vise and will fit on any members stout bench nicely.

good luck

Fretters: i really like the color scheme you have going with all your vises and maybe the one that is part of the beeswax mixture the best. thanks for sharing and post over on the vise of the year thread and it will go in the family photo voting later this month.

interesting that you mounted two vises on each side of that small bench and pretty damn clever if you ask me since both vices don't swivel. i was thinking of putting a trailer hitch on each side of the corner of my benches if i didn't had a non swivel vise i liked for that bench and now i can use two vises (vices). nicely done sir.

i'd also mention that maybe you should build a stout shelf or shelving unit so you can have a little more bench space, but your call on that one.

Driveshes asking 400 I haven't seen it in person yet so not sure about the welds just trying to get an idea of its value and if that was a fair price.

Loyd: it's worth it if it isn't welded, cracked or missing parts. if there is a ton of work to do to make it right then $100 is probably more realistic. hope that helps you some.

Loyd: since it weighs about 145 pounds another thing to mention is to pull the dynamic jaw out all the way (unscrew it) and don't drop it. that way you can inspect the vise nut, main screw and see the entire slide to see if any issues there. if you haven't seen a vise this size before just be aware you are in for a good surprise.

Thanks blue bolt for the id and the part numbers. It makes sense the swivel base is missing but I think for the size of this thing I will hard mount it and keep it handy for only the most brutal tasks so no problems. I am pumped.

:+1: on what Drives said.
The vises weighing over a hundred pounds require special planning. (I just took the next step in vise collecting and joined the hundred pound plus club yesterday with my Parker 956 at 130# which is still in pieces in the back of my car) And it is always a wise move to inspect as much as possible before handing over your cash.

Banjo:
Nice score and welcome to the club!
