Cutting Pipe Stand Heads

I have some pipefitter's jack stands, I want to cut the "V" shaped part off and weld something else on the threaded heads. Do I need to use an abrasive cutter, band saw, or can I use my dry saw with carbide tipped blade? I sure don't want to ruin an expensive blade!

What do you plan on using them for ? I have some with the '' V '' and I took some 4'' channel and welded flat stock to the underside of channel so they fit on top of the " V ". This way I have a flat surface to use.
As for cutting a portaband will work and definitely a abrasive saw. I wouldn't want to use the teeth type blade. If you do you gotta feed slowwwwww until you get into the full size material. It could chip a tooth on the deep thread.

I want to weld some flatbar on there with holes drilled. Weld more flat on the "V"s I cut off and I can bolt them back on, or bolt on rollers for my cut off saw, or jigs for sqaure/rectangle tubing to build car frames, etc. Basically, make them usefull for other things than pipe. I'll post pics later.

Buy some acme thread of the same size and make multiple heads to thread in to the stands.

I went with the Acme thread approach. I needed adjustable jack stands for my 1967 Mustang Fastback project and something that would support stock for my bandsaw. I bought four of these. They originally came with rollers on them. I threw the original roller attachments away and made new attachments that were more versatile. I've since made two attachments for them. One is the roller so I can use it to support stock for my bandsaw. The second is an an attachment I use when I'm using them as jack stands.


Here it is in the configuration to support stock for my bandsaw.

Here are all the parts that make it work. The Acme thread slips into a tube that is slipped into the stand. The tube is held in place by friction with the large washer and a large set screw (not shown in this picture but visible above). At it's lowest level the bottom of the slip tube rests on the stand. The Acme thread is adjusted with the Acme nut. I can then lock the Acme thread in place with the set screw as long as the slip tube is at it's lowest point (note hole in slip tube). The different "attachments" attach by a single flat-head 3/8-16 bolt.

I have two more that are taller that I use to support stock for my drill press. I also use the taller ones as an "out feed table" for my table saw.

In the future I may make a "V-type attachment to support round stock. When other needs come up I can fabricate an attachment to accommodate them.

Scaffold leveling legs are the correct size for pipe stands. I picked some up with the leveling handle for about 15$ each a while back at Menard's.

This has my interest. I was looking at a pair of these to use with my Bendpack scissor lift. The sell lift supports but they are way to tall to go under the scissor lift. The pipe stands are rated for 2000lbs, more than enough to help with balance. The other function would be to raise and lower the solid beam rear axle when working on the suspension.

Nice jackstands! Where did you find those?

Richard D, was your question directed at my post? If so they are Sumner Heavy Duty - Lo Jack stands. They are either the ST-902 or St-903 model. I purchased them from my local welding shop. They were not inexpensive.




Here is what I started with.


I removed the roller and its attachment and threw them away.

You might want to sit down if you're standing or pull over to the curb if you're driving. You will recall I said they were not inexpensive. The last two I purchased were $160 each at my local welding shop. You might be able to find them on-line for less but that might be off-set by shipping cost (they weigh approximately 20 pounds each). I did confirm they were the model ST-903.

I do try and support my local welding shop. I have received discounts on other purchases (depends if the manager is present when I show up). It also makes it easier to ask question or for assistance.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. I am very happy with how they work and the modifications I made.

Wow, I priced some out thru my LWS, and was quoted 91$ each.
