I'm seriously considering getting rid of my Dish TV, but my wife needs to be able to record some of her shows. Anybody know a good way to do this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

VHS vcr ? If you are going to go back in time might as well do it right :) Only problem is that VHS tapes are almost impossible to find except from online sources.

I use an antenna connected to a SiliconDust HD Homerun.

http://amzn.com/B00GY0UB54

The HD Homerun is then connected to my network router and I use Windows Media Center to watch live TV and record my shows. The HD Homerun has two tuners so I can record one show while watching another.

For a remote, I use the VRC-1100.

http://amzn.com/B00224ZDFY

My computer has HDMI out so it's plugged into my TV.

The setup works great!

Tivo roamio doesnt do over the air but the older premier does. I think tivo makes an over the air box as well. I have tivos and love them.

I have a home built DVR.

PC in a box that looks like a AV box.
AMD quad processor....8G ram
120M SSD
1TB HD
Haupaug TV tunner
Running Win7

I use Windows Media Center as my 'DVR' program

With the SSD, my cold boot is about 22 seconds.

I can record any program off my OTA or stream off the internet

And I can also surf the internet.....I've stored all the CD tracks on it...I use media monkey so I can just use it to play music all day....or IHeart off the internet.

New TiVo Bolt does OTA (edit: maybe... the faq mentions it but something else I see says it doesn't so who knows). I still have my Premiere and an older S3 that also do it although I haven't tried in a while.

I have heard about some people using a TV tuner card in their computer and an external hard drive to record stuff. I don't exactly how well that works, but apparently it works pretty good.

I'd like to figure that out on my Samsung.....

From memory you just put a USB stick in and hit record. Might need to format the stick in one of the menu's. Can't remember cause we mainly just use Netflix now.

For the OP, you can also get small cheap digital set top boxes that will record to USB too. I have one that cost about $15. It's basic, but foolproof and very low power draw with no moving parts.

TV tuner card for a PC. Or you can get a HTPC (Home Theater PC). I used to have one and it worked great. Back then the PC wasnt able to push full HD to my tv, but im pretty sure that has been rectified now.

My parents are using a Tivo and can record OTA. I can see what model they got.

Unfortunately it looks like the old Roamio OTA is gone and the only Tivo that will do OTA is the new Bolt... As well as the Tivo stuff works, that $15/mo fee *****...

Another option is the Tablo DVR. It streams over your home network to pcs, mobile devices or you can watch on a TV using a streamer (Roku, Apple TV, etc).... It has a subscription, but it is only $5/mo..

I have this card,
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr2255.html

Up until the point where the cable company encoded ALL broadcast, I 'could' receive all the basic cable channels because the card has QAM decoding as well as OTA. They also have a model that accepts the Access card for your typical table top cable or sat receiver.

I can use Hauppauge's tuner SW or Media Center. Nice thing about media center, once you configure it (tell it what TV area you are in), it goes out to the internet and downloads the channel list. Then it's easy to browse what is on TV. And set up programs to record.

Products like TIVO require a subscription to see the channel list.

I have a RF wireless keyboard to connect with it. I park my *** on the couch and play....it even has a trackball built into it.

The setup will also go to sleep when not in use and wake up to record a program.

The computer case is pretty cool. It looks just like an AV amp.

This is an early pic of my setup....can you guess which one is the PC?

nice setup ddawg, if you go with one of the boxes I talked about, you don't need to worry about any "encoding" done by cable, satellite, Netflix, etc...trying not to cross any lines, but you probably get what I mean...

He's talking about copy restrictions some cable companies put on EVERYTHING, even if it was given to them without any. But with OTA you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Sounds perfect !

I have researched this subject in a few years, but Hauppauge was the best you could buy back then. Stick with a board you can plug in. I have never heard od ANYONE who was completely happy with a USB based video capture, especially from OTA HD TV !

FYI, Win10 removed WMC. Also, even in Win7 you can't use Netflix inside WMC without a hack that seems to get removed by windows updates and has to be re-done occasionally. I have a HTPC I use for watching blurays and mostly use it as a server for watching DVD's and stored TV shows through TiVo. Having said that, I hate the powerdvd user interface compared to how well the TiVo rewinds and fast-forwards. More than that, I hate how slow and buggy playback of bluray is due to all the copy protection junk they put on it.

All good - Except that Media Center is no longer supported and deprecated on Win10. I looked into that - bummer.

VHS units sell for $10 to $20 at thrift stores around here. Possible to even find one with a remote which you will need. Blank tapes are also for sale at thrift stores and some second hand books store that sell recorded tapes for 50 cent to a dollar.

I have a library of over a hundred recorded movies. The big draw back to this seems to be that modern sound systems don't always have the correct input so you might need an old amp too.

May not be the best solution but it can work.

It is a shame -- you can get WMC to run on Win10, but again you are on borrowed time with the unsupported product.

Too bad, one thing that M$ sorta did right, and they canned it.

Can you point me to where I can get more info on a system like yours?
I still use an old Sony VCR that works fine, but useable tapes are getting hard to find.

Enter HTPC in google and you get tons of links

For starters...

http://www.htpcbeginner.com/what-is-htpc-aka-home-theater-pc/

I got most of my stuff from NewEgg.

My case is the nMEDIAPC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811204037

A few key things to really get some speed out of it (mine is almost good enough for serious gaming....just need a HP video card)

SSD....Put the OS on it.
Lots of RAM
The case I picked has plenty of HD slots. Is also very quiet. Noise can be an issue if you are watching a movie.

not usb, you use a HDMI splitter box with the cloner box and HDMI cables. the only thing going through USB is the digital file written to memory...if you don't have that, the Hauppauge line of PC cards, or a cheap used digital converter box would work too, but yes, the signal out of those isn't high def...
