Who uses liquid electrical tape?

I've never used the stuff. I normally heat shrink all my connections, but I can see where some instances this stuff might be useful when heat shrinking isn't an option. Do any of you guys use the stuff? Part of me always kind of thought it was gimicky, but I don't know why?

It works good, I use it as a liquid heat shrink for minor nicks on wires and on ground terminals so they dont corrode. One bottle lasts a while.

over 30 years in the trade and I never did. If I couldn't heat or cold shrink it, it got wrapped with 130C and 33 or epoxy encapsulated for water tight connections.

I've used it also. worked good. Fills up open spaces. Keeps moisture out

Works very well. Can also be layered. Handy for sealing puncture holes after testing.

I use it, its great for painting over crimps, or those DIN plugs you get on some solenoid coils to make them water proof.
I was put off by the price originally but would not be without in on the truck now.

I use it on the threads for air fittings instead of Teflon tape. You just need to let it dry a bit before pressurizing.

I have used it, but I stopped buying it because the last couple times I wanted to use it the stuff had dried up. So I stopped buying it. I have used scotchkote before and that stuff makes a mess, but it works well. I have never tried layering it, but the cans I have had never seem to dry up, but be prepared to use a pair of plier to open the top.

I use the 3M over heatshrinks for bilge pump connections. Like Strouty says it is messy, but like most 3M products it performs.

I use it regularly on trailer wiring. It is great. Most brands won't open when you try to reuse them though.

I find it very useful. Terminals that have loose pins can be fixed, or if you crimp your own connectors you can back-fill around the sealing grommets for added insurance.

Works great, especially if you can't use heat shrink or are just repairing a connection. Available in many different colors too. I've also used it when replacing extension cord ends to keep them weatherproof.

I use it on my automotive and marine wiring. I solder, liquid electrical tape and then adhesive lined heat shrink it.
Also helps if I'm doing a mid-wire splice/tap where I just strip the insulation the solder to it. I can't get heat shrink on it so I use the liquid electrical tape and then scotch 33 electrical tape to protect it.

Yep. Love it for added insurance. Hate to pierce wiring, but sometimes inevitable. A dab seals it right back up.

It's against my religion. Open and engine bay that it's been used in and melted and ran everywhere and you'll understand why.

The stuff i have is in a plastic bottle, but still dries out over time, last time i got some i ordered the correct thinner for it too so can dilute it back to a usable consistency when needed.

Turn container upside down after use...same as you would a can of paint..I generally use seam sealer on exterior electrical connections. That stuff sticks to anything and Napa had it on sale in Novermber $4 CDN a tube...i loaded up

I dont know what ya'll are doing but I just checked the can I have. It hasnt been opened in at least a month or two and its just fine. I've never had it dry out and I've been using the stuff for many years.

I have used Acetone to save a can that was drying out. It was Starbrite brand, but it had been sitting for at least five years since it was first opened.

I use it all the time as part of my job in Marine Electronics. We use two layers of vulcanizing (self adhering) tape, two layers of super 33 or 88 electrical, then a good coat of Starbrite. Starbrite seems to the be the best because the glossy coat going dull tells you that it should be replaced. I'd avoid the 3M Scotchkote brand, it dries and cracks very quickly.

The shelf life is only about 2-3 years after opening, depending on climate.

I have used.the.3M many times for many years and have not experienced the cracking. I too use self.adhering and 88 tape.
Thanks for mentioning it though, I will check a few older wraps.

I have had good luck with it. I use it quite often. I have had a can or two dry up when it was getting close to being empty

It's self sealing before it dries, doesn't tear when threading, and provides a good seal.

All the time,on porcelean lamp socket screw terminals on the cleat type sockets, good for repairing rotting nyc wiring if I cant use heat shrink.

I store them upsidedown but I have also let some argon gas from the tig welder displace the air in hopes of cutting down on the oxygen in the can.

Along with a couple others above, this ^^^ is my experience--works GREAT, but is expensive, then dried up and useless the next time I tried to use it. Granted I'm not an electrician, so it was more than a year between uses. The lid was on tight, before anyone asks.

Hmm, I've had the same bottle for a year or so, it has some little globs in it but it's perfectly usable. I do auto electrical but I can't think of a time I've used it at work. Occasionally it's useful on various projects around the house and such.
