Due to Hurricane IKE.. I got a new shop... about three time the size of the old 24x33

ok ok..... its a 40x50x14 with a 2/12 pitch.. it will encompass a full bath, Miller 300 Syncro wave tig, Thermal Dynamics Packmaster 75xl, a little 110 mig. a very nice 3/8" top 4x8 steel table. a 40" air over hyd pan/box/brake/sheer/roller... a very nice 30 gal parts washer, 20 tone press, etc... the big stuff out of the way.. any way... a few pics from start to almost completion..

Plumbing and forms start...NOTE the old shop on the right with gaping hole from 1 of 2 trees:wtf:

up date

I worked all evening.. and the last trims have been installed.. all the steel is now where it should be..

whats needs to be done now....is just the final screwing... I installed all the tin and trims with about 70% of the screws.... now.. I just have about 3 days of solid screwing left:devil:...

but the building is now 100% water tight and secure.....

I will take a final pic of the out side tomorrow....

First off, nice! Looks like a great setting, and you're going to have an amazing space!

Question: I'm considering using the vertical metal siding (what does everyone call it? rolled metal? galvalume?) over top of my old barn siding. Many barns in the area have done the same. How easy is it to work with? Any comments/tips on that? Also, it looks like in the last picture that you put it all up without making any cuts - I'm guessing it's cleaner/easier to snap a chalk line at the end and make one long cut?

Many thanks!

there are 2 types of panel. "R" panel and "PBR" I like the PBR panel as it has a load bearing edge...PBR stand for Purlin bearing "R" panel.. the difference is a support on one side of the panel.. makes real easy for making up the lap joints....
Galvalume is a color and a finish....mostly for roofing and the cheapest of the all the colors but my barn is sided in galvalume....

there is also 2 types or gages of steel, 29ga and 26ga... I will never use 29ga.. way to thin... go with the 26ga...

it is very easy to work with... a sharp sawsall does a good job at hacking what gets covered with trim... a electric nibbler is the best for exposed cuts..

the building I got was ordered from ADVANTAGE STEEL BUILDING out of LittleRock AK. so it was a precut/prefab building.... I did have to make a few cuts for the length of a few panels.... and a chalk line and my sawall did it fine.. I stayed away from the line and trimmed with wiess aviation snips...

I dont have all the Proper tools to install steel.. so I had to be creative a few times.

the biggest tip I can give you is get a lithium-ion impact driver... invaluable.... a ordanary battery drill will not cut it... ok it will but you will be there a while..

on the gable end.... yes... one long cut.... but it covers with a large trim.. so it did not have to be pretty .. just low enough for the trim to cover the ugly :D

hope that answers your Q's

Dude, that's a big *** forklift you got there! Looks like about 15K capacity or so. Nice!!

it s rough terrain forklift.. cap was only 7k but had a 21' mast.. my building has a 17'-6" ridge:scared:

the height was or is for this:)

looks nice. I'm sure it will turn out great. is that asbestos fiber cement siding on your old shop? is there any special code to follow to remove those in your area?

no its not asbestos.. its insulboard.... outlawed in the mid 1960s.. its a extreme fire hazard....... once it sets a light.... your going to have a heck of a time putting it out....

think of it as a big thick shingle....
