Hey guys,

I'm in the planning stage currently for a 40x80x16 pole barn to be built on 10 acres I own. I've got a rough floorplan drawn up and want to get some feedback on the lighting. The shop area minus the living quarters, will be 40 x 70 and with 16' ceilings, I'm looking at fluorescent high bay fixtures. I'd like to go LED, but budget may dictate standard T8's. They will be 4 ft., 4 tube fixtures. You can see from the picture, I've got 21 fixtures in three long rows of 7 fixtures per row. Each row will be on a separate circuit and switch. I plan to use this workshop as a metal fab and woodworking shop. The more light, the better as far as I'm concerned.

I will have many more questions as I go along in the planning process for you guys, I just want to see what you think about the lights so far.

Thanks!

Jeff

Jeff check my garage layout.. Garage is 48x105x16. I have 64 fixtures in four rows. One light in the middle is on 24 hr a day which makes it a night light and gives you light when you walk into the garage at night. I have change it over to led bulbs now. I have 256 bulbs in total. Tab picture and it will open up bigger.

Yes, 10x12 doors across from each other on the long sides of the building. And six windows, which should provide some natural light.

Envious of a shop that size!!!

In a space that large I personally would vote for more overhead doors for air movement and light even if you don't need the additional access. I have 3 overhead doors in my 30x40. Really great to have all the doors open when the weather is nice.

Man, that's a **** ton of lighting! Good idea on the night light. I guess you just can't have enough lighting, especially for my 54 year old eyes. Oh, and I covet your tractor

Agreed on the garage doors. I may put one in on the end opposite the office/living quarters. The more light and air, the better.

Nice garage, tractor, and Go Big Blue! Are you in KY? I'm in Harrodsburg, about 30 minutes south of Lexington.

I just put in four 3 bulb t8 housings and went with led tubes instead of traditional bulbs. Got them on Amazon for $170 shipped for twelve bulbs. I know they're more expensive than regular bulbs but the life span is 46 years at 3 hours per day. Best part is it eliminates the ballasts (wired direct to the tombstones) which eliminates parts that can fail. If you can find bare housings online it will really help offset the cost. Just my two cents worth. Looking forward to seeing what you make happen with this monster garage.

Yes I am in Northern Ky. Farm with toy box (LOL) is south of Alexandria,Ky . They just delivered the tractor that morning I took the picture. Oldest grandson and myself just finished putting the decal on the front window shield. I was fooling around taking pictures of my new toy.

There's no doubt that LED has the longevity and brightness I need. It's just a matter of price and what the budget will allow. I had earmarked $1500 for lighting and I hope to stay close to that. The building itself will cost $40-$45k and I figure about 10k for the interior improvements which pretty much exhausts the budget. I'm looking forward to getting it off the ground and posting up pictures of the build. I must be patient!:)

Im not sure how you plan to use your shop but i would add another overhead door on the gable end and an entry door on the back of the building. I think i only have 24 of the 8' T8 lights in my 60x104' shop with 16' ceilings. With White metal walls and ceilings its plenty of light. I will double check on the number of lights tonight when i stop by the shop.
