What works well over existing coating

Hello,

This is the first thread I have started here on GJ.

I just purchased a house with a 630 sq/ft garage that I will be rebuilding cars in and need a good floor coating.

The Catch....

The previous owner coated the floor in the Tan with flakes Lowes or Home Depot floor coating. It doesn't look very good and is not very thick in certain spot.

I would like to just coat over top of the existing since it is not cracked or lifting, but I am not sure if that is possible.

I am really looking for a solid color (Black High Gloss) if possible.

What can I do?

Honestly, if you want to put down a good quality coating you will want to remove the current poor quality coating. Your new coating is only good as what's underneath. If the coating underneath wants to peel, so will your new coating.

If you don't want to remove it, the best method for coating over it is to rough up the coating with 100 grit sandpaper, sweep or vacuum the dust up, and then wipe it down with denatured alcohol applied liberally to a lint free towel. This will remove any remaining dust and dirt and is ready to go as soon as you are done.

That was kind of what I was thinking....

I was hoping that wasn't the case but I guess I need to reevaluate my plan.

What many of our customers do in that situation is go back with a garage tile -- if they are not wanting to do the floor prep
