Being old school, I learned years ago to determine at a glance what size and thread count is for typical fasteners and pipe fittings, except for metric, metrics not spoken here. Too old and stubborn to change, and I sometimes discard metric fasteners and replace with American Standard. I have a hardware rack that holds hundreds of my fasteners up to 1/2."

There's only 5 sizes until you get to 1" and should probably measure from there on.

1/8" 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" 3/4". My suggestion is goto the plumbing aisle every time you goto big box and calibrate the eye.

I worked as a service man for 15 years, and am still embarrassed to say, I could very seldom reliably "eyeball" pipe sizes. Unless you are able to find a fixture from a store, I think what you are looking for is going to have to be made.

For Plumbing/ HVAC/ Pipe I may suggest doing black pipe fittings as described, flare fittings, compression fittings, and if you do auto, double flare. You could also do PVC, pex, etc if you would use that regularly.

I have thought of making one for hardware, metric, sae, fine thread, etc. It should be a fairly easy and quick project, could save a lot of time searching for hardware, or worse yet, guessing at the store by "eyeballing" it and making a second trip.

Ayuh,... I can't see a reason for such an Id board, unless yer workin' with these fittin's daily,....

'n then, you'd know what they were, just by lookin' at 'em,....

Just because Id like to add it to my new garage :) I have a bucket full of fittings and if I need one it would be nice and quick to just see which one it fits, just like in the bolt thread board I posted a link to. Sure I could get out calipers and thread gauges but thats not as easy, plus I think it would look cool on the wall.

That link does not work for me.
