Top: I saw and i liked it when the guy at a local home show was selling them 30 years ago and i think i paid $200 in that range. i'm not sure what they are new, but when googling saw that one of them is made in China now and can break and the 300 pound guy writing the post in Woodworker's forum said his old one he could put all hit strength into his old one and it wouldn't break.

I've never beat on mine (much), but it holds wood, golf clubs, saw and lawnmower blades nicely. you can put it on a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 and screw one end of the 2 by onto your deck and have it at the ready sticking out from your deck or just clamp it to a saw horse. now that i'm going to put a big old Rock Island with a busted off foot outside i probably won't need the Zyliss as much outside, but as you saw in the video it does have a few uses. yours looks like it was WELL USED (ABUSED SOME TOO) and i'll let you tell me (us) how you like it.

DRIVES I like it a lot. It's just that all my bench's are either too thin or too thick to mount to so I really don't have a need. I picked it up for two reasons. First I never messed with one before and second it was 12 bucks... And should make about 500%. That's better than Wall Street. Once my new shop is up and running I will pick another up that's in better shape. !

Top: prices are pretty good on them because not many people know how they work. keep you eye out for the older ones new in the box. the ones with the wood handles are worth an even better return.

they sell for $20 to $150 on craigslist up here.

I didn't weigh it. If I pull it back apart for restore I will. The PO said he weighed it and he thought it was right at 210lb. I'll be heading to PDX in late Feb. Trying to clear out the extra vises and "blocks" to get some room. Will post more pics later.

I have the same version 2C. Not sure exactly where it fits: it has the split retainer ring on the spindle, but has a rounded "meatball" nose. The newer models with that split ring have the blunted nose.

Can we ask what it cost you?

I'd have to check, but I think it was $300. Not a great price, but it's in good shape and none of these are available in my area.

Ya man those are very nice. I checked out the site last night and just need to verify the jaws listed for the 600S fit for sure. I'm sure they do but wanted to double check the center line measurements of the mounting bolts.

I was going to wait to disassemble this 449 but... It came right apart. Very heavy and solid. check out the handle screw assembly next to a Reed 204 - the Reed looks like a baby! The only thing I could not easily get apart is the swivel base. That 1 3/8 bolt is huge! I don't have a socket that big, any thoughts? I am thinking about how I would like to finish this when I get to it, does anyone know what color these old parkers were from the factory? Thanks for your help - Jim

Top one other thing I forgot to mention on the Zyliss, is they are nice and portable. As drives mentioned, you can quickly clamp them to near anything handy, if it fits, and voilla! This is a good thing for helping out relations and folks like my mom, who only has a very few tools half of which I gave her...

Went to the local flea market today and picked up this Parker 973 1/2. Really good shape, covered in dirt. Missing the wrench, opens and shuts, rotates great. Don't need it but bought it anyway. Paid $25.

I was out in the workshop today and found a long forgotten 1 3/8 William superwrench. I was able to break that big bolt free on the 449 and move it a couple inches but then it got pretty tight again. I don't want to damage it so thought I'd ask here. Any trick to removing this huge bolt? I've got it doused in penetrating oil and letting it soak some more. If you have unscrewed the bolt 2" it should be ready to fall out. The threaded part of those usually are only around 1 1/2". Keep with the back & forth and it should come out.

I'm assuming you mean 1-2" of wrench movement, right?

Yes - work the penetrating oil for a bit but I'm guessing that the tip of that bolt mat extend to or possibly into the slide cavity, so that last thread may have rust on the tip.

Have you removed the main nut yet? Can you see if the bolt tip is inside?

Eventually you will have to just bull past it, but the softer that rust/crud is, the easier that will be and the less likely damage will occur.

I think you paid more than $25 for that Parker 976 though. I assume this is your garage since you didn't announce you bought an Emmert 6A.

The Emmertt has been here for a while. I got the Parker for 1/2 of the asking price, but it was high to start with. I also got another Baldor grinder stand in the deal.

After digging out of the two feet of snow (ok I used a snow blower and plow), I had some time to take some photos of last weeks finds. Wilton 4" 1977, Wilton 3 1/2" 1971 photos show after wire wheeled. Twin Reed 1c 3 1/2" jaws and pipe jaws still intact(1 would be nice 2 is awesome).

The fifth vise is a Parker 206 5" jaws, as you can see in photos its been a heavily use vise, and has some issues.

Spent the afternoon cleaning this little guy up. A very different form for a small vise but i can see a definite use for it. Beautifully made. I cant find anything like it online. Putting it up on ebay, i dont expect to see much $$ for it but if someone can appreciate it then my job is done.

I blew all the $ I had $500. They have more, I will be going back. I was not there for vises, just picking something up and I asked. Hey do you have a vise for sale? He has a parker 22X with a cracked slide, and If I remember correctly a 974 clean. And 2 more sheds to go through. I need $$$.

Mounted it on my Bridgeport 10" sine plate to drill the pin holes at 11 degrees. I took the clamps off the sine plate before taking pictures in case someone notices.

Edit: looking on gumtree, used looks like they're going for minimum 200$ used. The only bad thing is when you turn it to the left, the jaws don't open, but you can pull them open when you stop. It tightens just fine though.

From your description, there should be an E-clip, snap ring or some kind of retainer. Our vise experts from down under should be able to show you the exact retainer to use.

Just a guess, but turn the vice upside down and see if there is a spring coiled around the screw near the handle end.

If there is one, chances are that it's squished and lost its springiness. Dismantle the vice, remove the spring and stretch it a little using vise /Mole grips..then assemble.

Cleaning the vice of any crud will also help

That's an unusual size for a Dawn offset vice with a 90mm jaw width - these days they are manufactured in 100, 125 and 150mm jaw widths in both standard and "super duty" formats. In pre metric days they were manufactured in 3, 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2, 5 and 6" widths.

You've scored an amazing deal for $6~, here in Australia where they are not scarce, a vice in that nice a condition would easily sell for $200 plus.

The old 3" version had the 2 hole mounting like this one, but the larger vices all have 4 mounting holes in the base.

Ahhh, just saw the updated photos - the 3 hole mounting base is another oddity. I would guess from the logo and jaw mounts that it's from the late 80's or early 90's , but not at all sure.

As others have said - you never forget your first, and this one has set the bar pretty high..

Gert, I have the same kind of RI., but smaller.---I think they have a center post like the Versa-Vise that a cam binds against as you tighten down on something, rendering it nonswiveling.---Pretty good idea.---Someone on here had a cut-away AD on one, and you could see just how they work.---Might have been B100.---If I can find it again I'll post.

All three of those on the tailgate have the same swiveling system.

VA - Your RI is mislabeled. If it has the same swivel lock mechanism as the Versa/Gyro vise, that system was patented on 15 Oct. 1901 by J.(John) R. Long (my Vise Hero), he invented the Versa/Gyro Vise, the Pittsburgh Vise, and a couple of variations of the Pittsburgh Vise for pipe as well as at least a half dozen improvements to vises in general.

I have a good deal of his material and am putting something together on his "stuff".
