Top: I saw and i liked it when the guy at a local home show was selling them 30 years ago and i think i paid $200 in that range. i'm not sure what they are new, but when googling saw that one of them is made in China now and can break and the 300 pound guy writing the post in Woodworker's forum said his old one he could put all hit strength into his old one and it wouldn't break.

I've never beat on mine (much), but it holds wood, golf clubs, saw and lawnmower blades nicely. you can put it on a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 and screw one end of the 2 by onto your deck and have it at the ready sticking out from your deck or just clamp it to a saw horse. now that i'm going to put a big old Rock Island with a busted off foot outside i probably won't need the Zyliss as much outside, but as you saw in the video it does have a few uses. yours looks like it was WELL USED (ABUSED SOME TOO) and i'll let you tell me (us) how you like it.

I bought an older Zyliss Profi-king plus at Goodwill this past summer for $6.99. I don't think it was ever used ...

Spent the afternoon cleaning this little guy up. A very different form for a small vise but i can see a definite use for it. Beautifully made. I cant find anything like it online. Putting it up on ebay, i dont expect to see much $$ for it but if someone can appreciate it then my job is done.

My guess is that it was made by a machinist in their shop for a specific job. It's beautifully made!

Gert, I have the same kind of RI., but smaller.---I think they have a center post like the Versa-Vise that a cam binds against as you tighten down on something, rendering it nonswiveling.---Pretty good idea.---Someone on here had a cut-away AD on one, and you could see just how they work.---Might have been B100.---If I can find it again I'll post.

All three of those on the tailgate have the same swiveling system.

Thanks grouseman for the photo's, info and search for b100's post.
b100 was so kind to send me a lot of documents and catalogs with info on the RI no24, including the 'see-through-view' of the mechanism that you mentioned a few posts later.
Nice to know this methode is used in other vises as well.
Its going to be a tough one to get everyting lose. Will take my time and try not to break anything.
At least the locking pin is out (drilled a hole, tapped a thread, used the old, broken Wilton C2 jaw).
A new pin will not be a problem - I'll make a new one.

That's really cool! I've haven't seen it before. It's probably better that you never find one. If you do you'll spend the rest of your life trying to find the vise and anvil.

Got any more info on it? I'd like to see how the wheels work.

Finally got a vise this year. $35

No wrench but has the clip to hold on the wrench. Not super sharp serrations like the two newer Parker 974 vises I restored, but they are nearly Perfect jaws!

I was drilling a hole the other day and realized that no one (at least I don't remember) has posted a pic of a float lock drill press vise. This is one I'll never part with, don't know how I did without it. Very fast, easy, and versatile. The jaw with the ring simply slides in place against the part to be drilled, pull the ring to slide it away. Loosening the lock handle where it's bolted through the table allows you to swing the vise in an arc and slide the shaft in and out.

Don't worry, this wasn't a through hole so the table was never in danger.:)

What kind of ups driver is driving around with my vise delivery at 9pm. Either it's lost, or the driver's truck broke down.

Indeed, although UPS regularly delivers as late as 10pm around here. I'm lucky to get my deliveries before 8pm and almost never before 5pm, and it's a business address!

That's an unusual size for a Dawn offset vice with a 90mm jaw width - these days they are manufactured in 100, 125 and 150mm jaw widths in both standard and "super duty" formats. In pre metric days they were manufactured in 3, 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2, 5 and 6" widths.

You've scored an amazing deal for $6~, here in Australia where they are not scarce, a vice in that nice a condition would easily sell for $200 plus.

The old 3" version had the 2 hole mounting like this one, but the larger vices all have 4 mounting holes in the base.

EDIT
Ahhh, just saw the updated photos - the 3 hole mounting base is another oddity. I would guess from the logo and jaw mounts that it's from the late 80's or early 90's , but not at all sure.

As others have said - you never forget your first, and this one has set the bar pretty high..

That is one hell of a deal jeepster - nice one .

And a big happy Australia Day to you Ralf, and all other Australians too

Thanks. Lazy day today, but resisted the urge to hit the beach for a surf in deference to our snowbound cousins stateside. Settling in front of the TV with a beer to watch the T20 cricket with India - not real cricket of course, but should be good for a laugh. Life is good.

Oh jeeze, it's a good thing I'm an early riser. I nearly slept through Australia Day again. Happy day to you Ralf, and thanks for the consideration. Snow does have it's positive side though. You hardly ever hear of wildfires in the snow. You've got me curious though. Just why isn't it real cricket and what would make it real?

To the purists, International Test Cricket is the pinnacle of the sport with the game played over 5 days. The next tier down is One Day International Cricket which is as the name suggests is played over a full day - the number of balls faced by each team is limited to 50 overs, an over being a group of 6 balls.
T20 is a shorter game again where each team is limited to facing 20 overs, so the game is finished in 4 hours or so. T20 has become popular over recent years because it is fast and furious, or hit and giggle as some have commented. India has a domestic T20 competition called the India Premier League where franchises bid enormous amounts of money in an auction type system for international players to bolster their domestic teams. Australia runs a similar T20 competition called the "Big Bash League" which is drawing large crowds. Both these leagues have a strong focus on the betting industry.

Think of Test cricket as a 5 course meal in a fancy restaurant accompanied by a fine wine - and T20 as stopping by a 7-11 for a Mars bar and a Slurpee.

India outplayed Australia in the T20 match this evening - not only was it Australia Day but also Republic Day for India.

While T20 is not "real" cricket, it requires different and sometimes phenomenal skills, which are finding their way into Test cricket which has added some extra spark.

Sorry for the long winded post - and please don't ask me to try and explain the finer points of cricket - there is probably not enough space left on the internet...

Sweet DP vise.

I've been watching hard for one of those float locks to appear around here. The only ones I've found were missing the table mount clamp, and just came with the rod and vise jaws.

That's usually the case, I saw this one on Clist a few years ago attached to a drill press (poor pictures). I didn't really need another press and sent a text asking if he would sell me the vise only. We agreed on $25. Upon arrival at the owners home I find the vise removed sitting on the front porch, minus the table clamp. When I ask for it he tells me it must still be attached to the table, which it was. I follow him around the back to his garage and find a very nice original condition floor model Delta drill press circa 1951. He says to me "why don't you just take the whole thing for an additional $50?". It's been one of my happier acquisitions.

The heat is killing over here, high 30's then last evening the clouds rolled in for a humidity sauna. Today is the same, angel rain and even undercover, it's wetter out of the shower than in.
I heard that the TAB is taking odds on who has accepted the money and when they will make their play. Watch closely

I lived and worked in South and South East Asia for 20 years, and always found Auckland one of the most oppressively humid cities I visited at certain times of the year. At least that means that things don't burn so well as they do here in summer.

Now back to vices - the runt of the herd at 2 1/2"

i was totally fine with my second hand "made in china" vise for years, but the handle is just beat to **** and one of the ends is MIA on the threaded rod. I found a 12" hardened shaft on mcmastercarr that would be a terrific replacement, but is $58 for the rod w/o ball ends!! So yeah, after revisiting this thread over the last few days I find myself looking for a more proper usa made unit to refurb. Too bad I can't find anything decent on CL right now, I totally have the time to sink into a project.

I have bought a vice or 2 on Ebay, but most of the best deals have come from dirt markets or garage sales. I have not paid more than 60 USD for any quality second hand vice, but anything above a 4" jaw width here is hard to find.
I gather some real bargains even on big iron can be had stateside with a bit of patience - and for many the fun of the hunt adds to the value.
Just try to stop at one...

Was that a recent trip? I've only been looking on CL since last summer and have yet to find a Reed of this vintage. Nice find!

Brian

I think it was late August. Not many out there and none here in Montana. Good luck with your search, Mike.

Look on CL Las Vegas and search for "vice". There is one listed 4" and 65 lbs. American made. A 65 lb. 4" vise is going to be a good one. There is no brand listed ?

OK Wilton experts. I'm scratching my head on this one. A Chicago Wilton. No date on the slide. Jaws have horizontal lines. Jaws measure 4.25" and are flush with the towers. Not 4", not 4.5", 4.25". Screws are not Phillips head, they are standard screw driver heads.
Only markings are "HD" on the towers. Swivel lockdowns have screw ins, which as I was recently schooled in, were on older vises. WTF???? Any help?:wtf: :headscrat

Were Wilton Bullet vises ever made out of the USA? And if so when.
Thanks John

Sure, the York bullet vices made in Czechoslovakia and around Europe before the Wilton founders copied the design!
