Have a friend who wants to get rid of a Dayton 4B236 and wants me to make an offer. I have no clue on the worth of this compressor. He bought it used a few years ago, ran fine when he bought it, but he said the motor went out.

He got a new motor and says it will trip when it gets hot. Don't know if he means the breaker or pressure switch it tripping, but will not fill completely.

What $$$$ is a fair price, don't want to low ball him.

Well, I bought a almost new, 7.5 HP Ingersol Rand vertical compressor that is similar to yours for $800.
It's run perfectly for 3 years now.

Cant see the HP rating on the motor but the amps make it seem like its a 3hp. It may be too small for the pump hence it overheating and the thermal overload tripping before it can even fill the tank. Or the pump may be going bad and putting extra load on the motor.

Its missing the belt guard too. Price depends on if you can figure out why its tripping and what the condition of the tank is inside. The rust on top and cracked logo tell me its spent quite a while sitting outside.

Meh, its a cheapie single stage setup with a cheap replacement motor on it. You could buy a Quincy that size which will last literally forever for $2-300. I'd pass but to give it a value I'll agree with maybe $100.

With its age, I would also be concerned about the tank. Who knows when and how often it was drained. I would pass. To many makes and models available today to chance one that might be ok, or a total waste.

Save your money for a new, better compressor. What will you use it for....what are your needs.? That compressor does not produce a whole lot of air.

Thanks for the comments, but I'm going to pass. It is a 3hp motor, but the condition of the compressor and tank are unknown. No telling what is causing it to trip the breaker, really don't want to be buying a problem. Hell, it might be have full of water and never has been drained!

$100 tops if it's fully functional. Run it and open the drain - if a ton of black junk comes out with a lot of rust then maybe pass as it's not been maintained. You can get a brand new one just like it with a full warranty for under $500 everywhere, probably under $450 on sale. My campbell is basically the same model, paid $399 new.

I had the Cambell Hausfeld version of that compressor, identical pump. I'm going to guess one of the reed valves broke and that's why it keeps getting hot and tripping the breaker. I got mine free and the valve plate isn't very expensive, but it really isn't a very good compressor. I've since replaced it with a nice used two stage that's been much more reliable.

$100 is a little cheap if it were fully functional. They get that and more for small 30 gallon ones around here. I would say $200 functional and maybe $100 if you know it is just the motor and you already have one or access to one cheap.
