Bit broke off in Impact Driver..

So the fing bit broke off inside my rigid impact driver. Before someone suggests to grab it with pliers, vice etc.. not possible as the thing is quite a ways down.

I tried drilling it and it somewhat works but the issues is the bit actually spits down there so that's not working for me either.

I took the whole thing apart and I have the anvil (chuck) in my hand but no luck. I can push the bit down and it comes back up but no wheres close to actually grab it with anything.

Any of you guys have advice??

I guess you could hammer in a small brad/nail at the edge to keep it from spinning so you can drill it some more.

It's jammed in there to the point where it won't come out, but yet spins around.

Rare earth magnet should get that out. Does your impact have some kind of collar that needs to be released to get the bit out? Maybe that is jammed closed?

Maybe a drop of "Quik JB Weld" on the end of a welding rod or metal coat hanger. Let it set up and hope for the best.

Well it does have collar but that's all been removed lol. I don't even know wtf is holding this thing in there still. I can push it some down and it comes back up.

I thought of that but I got some oil in there now as I was trying to drill this thing out.So I don't even know how well it would adhere at this point.

I would clean with brake clean.

You need to hold it securely with vice grips and then swing it down hard face first against a very solid piece of steel that has zero give. the bit will fly forward. Then you need to hit it again just contacting the edge of the steel so the bit has room to come out.

This is a long shot, I'm trying to help, so don't blast me for this.

Do you have a heat gun, a good one. Maybe heat the outside of your collar, and the metal will expand enough for it to give enough clearance for the bit inside to get some relief.

I sure wish you the best. I have been in such situations, and it is nerve wrecking.

Similar to this, but hold the assembly with vise grips and strike the back repeatedly with a hammer.

Well I got it out.. I beat the hell out of it from the front and the back end came out. Now hopefully I can put this back together and the thing still actually work and hold bits in there.

Yah so now basically it it holds the bit locked in if I pull the collar up, when I let the collar go the bit just comes right out - no resistance holding it.

Basically the chuck collar now works in reverse of how it used to..

What gen? I have my gen 4 in front of me and it looks the same, part #r86034.

I can pull the collar up and it stays there until I insert a bit, then it snaps back down with the back of the collar right on the edge of the anvil.

Did you try putting the anvil back in the impact? There is a pin on the inside that pops the bit out.

Order of parts from back to front: Anvil, two bearings, collar, spring, thin washer, then snap ring.

No, the wider part that has the knurling faces the front, away from the motor.

You might need to reassemble completely, because there is a spring loaded plunger that sits inside the anvil, on the very bottom. That may have something to do with it.

That plunger thats inside the anvil is what came out before and when I finally pulled that broken bit out.

That may be your problem, the plunger needs to stay in. It may have fractured.

The spring is not visible at all. I really think you broke the inner plunger, as that's what it looks like in your pic showing the piece that came out.

Nah the thing in the pic is the actual bit.

The plunger is intact, It just popped out of its grove but its back in the chuck.

Glad to hear you got it out but sorry you are having trouble reassembling.

My question is what were you using the driver for and what brand/type of bit was it.

This is the 2nd thread this week on a similar issue. Going to make me think twice about the things I use my M18 Fuel 1/4 Hex for and bits I use in it.

Well I got it back together and it appears to work. My issue was I was putting the spring below the collar while it was supposed to be on top, then washer then the locking ring. So now it actually holds the bit as it should and releases.

However, now it impacts randomly when I run it. Now constantly but every now and then it will do a impact.

What happened with the bit was the bit was sitting in my garage and had a slight bit of rust on it. Well I guess it weakened the integrity of it and it snapped off.

This has happened twice now with my Milwaukee Fuels (both M12/18).

I just send them back to Mil for warranty. Both times it was a HF step bit with the 1/4" hex shaft. I only chuck them up now.

Yah no, the issue still persists it's impacting randomly now and then.

Not sure what the issue could be why its doing this now. It almost appears that it does it if it sits longer then when you just pull the trigger it does it then stops and appears to be fine.
