MR: Bagged and Joe actually have the ability to put their BLO and oiled vises in a smoker and bake them so guessing Bagged did that with his he just posted. he might not have, but i saw Joe's and Bagged's BLO baked vises that look awesome. check out the vise repair 101 thread to see Fretter's vise he waxed and another one he just used shoe polish and they both look great.

Oldie: thanks for the pictures and those cars are so far out of my league i wouldn't even know what to do if somebody handed me the keys and said go drive it.

Outlaw: IT'S a SLOOOOOOOOW process of resisting the temptations of not buying a vise especially when it's right in front of you. that Columbian will end up in a member's home shortly I'd imagine because unless it's swivel jaw or the OLD Huge columbians they don't get my attention like some other brands do. i'm not going to buy a vise today. :dunno:

Rock Island 3-1/2” Vise

I have been enjoying this forum for quite a while, but this is my first post.

I picked up this garage sale find the other day and would appreciate any info that forum members can provide. It’s only a 3-1/2”, but it is a monster 3-1/2 – 17-3/4” long x 11” wide (swivel base), 4” wide (body) x 10-3/4” high. It weighs 63 pounds!

Other than the one “ROCK ISLAND” marking on the side it has only a single 73-C stamped on the underside of the base. It has remnants of yellowish green paint. As you can see from the photos it is in great condition – missing one screw to hold one of the pipe jaw clamps in place.

The first two photos are of the Rock Island 3-1/2” beside my Columbian 3-1/2”. The Rock Island dwarfs the Columbian – 63 pounds versus 8 pounds – the Rock Island is 8 times the size/weight!

A rock island combination vise is a rare one indeed. Like drives said, rock island is on the top of any vise enthusiasts list, and at the top of mine. Very nice

Elbaite: now you might know why i praise Rock Island vises more than most of the rest. nice find and guessing the Columbian might be moving either to another bench or a friend's garage soon?

welcome to the group and feel free to post a WELL DONE or just ask a question or two if you have any because we are a pretty good bunch here at GJ and especially on this thread.

Dennis: not nearly the Columbian you just mounted on your own bench is it? even if it was in similar shape your baby blue older one is superior.

Oldie: any more Car or vise ****? i'd be afraid to drive that out in the streets around my house. man that is a good looking ride.

EG: you done with those leather jaw covers yet??

Drivesitfar..

Agree, no where near the vise of the baby blue vintage.. Its more like the big brother of the brown one it replaced (Columbian as well, lighter duty and not necessarily made in USA, post 40668). My son didn't have time today to get details on it, was caught up in physical inventory..

Let me begin by saying that I HATE the snow and politics of the Northeast, what I LOVE is the fact that I find stuff like this everyday! Just unbelievable. I went to a shop up near VT this morning to get a tool repaired (they were the only place that had the parts). When I walk in I start chatting up the owner. Turns out they have been in business since the 1940s, his family started the shop. We then start talking about vises and he takes me in back...

HOLY SHEET!!!!!

First vise I see is this 8" Morgan. Wow!

Then this 8" Swivel Jaw, yes swivel jaw Prentiss (I believe it is a Prentiss based on the swivel lockdown)

Then I saw this 8" that I knew was a Columbian, then I saw the tag. CRAFTSMAN! Wow that's the biggest I've ever seen!!!!

None are currently for sale but all were in excellent shape. I didn't even offer yet, I told him I loved them, but I figure this is a 9 or 10 month sales cycle on these so why rush it. Guys in his 60s, I just need to be there when he is ready.

Anyway, thought youd find all this interesting.:bounce:

Joe, I missed your post, wow three 8 inch vises and one is a swivel jaw. The Craftsman is not the one everyone is looking for but still a impressive vise, they used the Craftsman Spindle and knob ends. I could not make out the tag.

The Prentiss 8 inch is the first I have seen. I have a 7" swivel jaw and would love that 8 incher. I hope you have a shot at it. Thanks for sharing.

Been a while since I have been on here and I don't have enough post to post this in the classified section. Being I'm not a collector I would like to sell this vise if anyone is interested.

I like the Quickset too Msg.---I've seen them priced anywhere from $9.00 to $129.00 on EBay.---I've got 4 of them and buy one every time I catch one on the cheap.---8 lbs. is pretty hefty for a table vise, and they are built like a tank.---Spring loaded for quick action.---Not many bad marks against the Quickset.---IMO.

You did good Sir.

Ended up painting the letters gold...first time painting letters. I'm happy with how it turned out. Used a paint marker.

That really pops with the gold letters over black. What kind of paint and what technique did you use for the lettering?

Thanks for the kudos......The member I bought it from was a great guy to deal with......When you are in New York and the vise is in Montana it's important that the seller is a stand-up, honest guy......it worked out well......

The cheapest way to get it from Montana to New York was FedEx @ $115.00....Fastenel® was ~ $150.00....Shipping was an ouch, but as MT said it is expensive to move freight in Montana.....

Hemi: i would have thought it would be about that much. did MT put the Reed 2C in a box? how do you like the 2C compared to your big Wilton bullet or other vises.

BTW it might be expensive to ship out or to Montana, but i've only been there once for about a week and i could easily live the rest of my life there. the people were great and the country air and views are amazing.

Hi guys, I managed to unchain the Wilton C3 and put into service today.

When its job is done, it goes under the workbench.

I am about to order some gym weight plates to counter balance. $50 for 50 pounds and I would like 100lb of it.
Does anyone know if mild steel plates weight more or cast iron? It may be cheaper to buy a stack of steel plates.

I am going to get a weight distribution reading of the front and rear legs.

Poor: that is a very nice looking stand for sure, but i'm also worried about having something heavy and big in it's jaws. too bad you are not closer because i have a few pounds of gym weights sitting in storage i'm going to sell and some of the old standard size weights (one inch holes) are about half that much. have you checked Craigslist in your area?

Oh those weights would be exactly what I need to choose from. I am going to take a look at craigslist for a little while. maybe a couple of paver blocks for now.
I would plan to loop a ratchet strap under the 80 gallon air compressor, or the steel pole that protects the water heater. That way it cannot physically tip over.

Poor: the 20 & 25 pounders are a good size and not as popular to make dumbbells out of so a bit less expensive than the ones 10 pounds and less. 50's are a little more rare, but if you can find some they might work best. good luck

Get: do you still have that cool stand you made with the 25 pound weight on top of it and that awesome triple swiveling vise sitting on the stand? i can't find a picture of it so if you still have it can you post a few again? also did you weld the 25 pound plate to the post or bolt it on somehow?

The hole in the weight and the top of the stand were 1" I cut a piece of 1" round and welded it on the inside of the weight and the top of the bar. It was one of my best welds and you can't even see it. The extra swivel piece is not on the vise in the picture. Sorry !

Get: thanks and yes that's the one. BTW does that wrench under the plate serve a purpose or was it part of the original old cast iron stand so you just left it there? do you remember what that old stand held before you made it into one of the coolest vise stands around?

MT took the vise somewhere to get it packed and shipped.....The packaging left a lot to be desired, but the vise survived the cross country trip unharmed....So, I'm very happy......I was born in Erie, Pa so Reed vises have a special meaning to me.....As do Hollands, also made in Erie.....Hard to pick favorite brands....They all seem to have characteristics that are either good or bad.....

My wife and I have a toyhauler that we want to make a cross country trip in before they slam the lid closed on me.....Montana will definitely be one of the states we'll pass through....

Anybody recognize this vise? My son found it in a back corner at work.. jaw missing, etc.. he's looking to see if the tapped holes are roasted and otherwise get more details on it...

View media item 57632

As someone already stated, it's a Columbian. I found a match here http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=605099&postcount=3 but there's no model number. I think it's pre-Wilton take-over and made in the US, but not as nice as the vintage vises made by Columbian 50 years ago.

It's been used for scarfing and is in horrible condition, but might still clean up. I would use it as a welding vise.

Thanks!

I was planning to use the paper towel method but the casting on the Prentiss is not clean and would've likely resulted in a messy look. Ended up buying a couple paint markers from a hobby store and used them instead. The paint flowed nicely from the tip with just a slight touch of the raised lettering.

Black color is regular Rustoleum Black in Satin finish.

S4: thanks for taking the time to not only post your vise, but also the paint pen you used. i'll have to try both the paper towel and the paint pen methods if i do paint a vise. nice job restoring that old Prentiss vise too.

ALL: anybody painted the letters yet on a vise they just oiled or waxed or shoe shined? love to hear how that worked. i'm guessing maybe sanding the letter tops might help which i think KMScott does on all of his painted ones might work best or do tell?

If you look close there is a knob there also. The threaded hole was there already and I had a knob off an oxygen tank and a square headed bolt that fit. I planned on drilling a shallow set screw hole at four places to be able to rotate and lock it better. I thought the handle would look better but never got back to change it. The handle is just hanging there so I wouldn't misplace it. I have no clue what the stand was from but it is heavy.

Get: thanks for the 411. i'm still not quite sure how you attach the weight plate to the stand or did you just weld a pipe to the weight plate, drop it inside the stand and then the screw with the tank handle tightens it up? if you ever decide to move it and need to take the vise and weight plate out i'd love to see a few pictures of both the empty stand and the underside of your weight plate either here or on the vise stands thread.

i have an old grinder stand i'm pretty sure i'll be putting some big piece of plate on and not exactly sure how i'll do it. i think there are holes in the top of my stand so i can maybe tap or drill some holes for some big bolts or having a removable and adjustable stand gives me options of more than one vise which is a good thing. isn't it??

sorry i can't locate my old grinder stand picture at the moment, but it's similar in age to yours with a round bottom.
