Hello all,

I've been a long time lurker on these boards. I think I "discovered" GJ by Google searching for "filing cabinets + garage" when I found some practically free cabinets for my own garage. Then I somehow stumbled upon Jack Olsen's 12 Gauge Garage thread. That did it.

I was hooked. I quickly joined the website and have gleaned so much useful information since then (it's been a few years now). I am a member of a few other large internet forums (motorcycle, 4x4) and I see that some of you are too! I read a lot, and don't ask too many questions. I tend to blend in.

No longer! I now find myself collecting old tools, bought an older Record vise, spend idle moments at work sketching up dream shop work plans and the list goes on. Did I mention that I picked up a *free* Delta/Rockport drill press a few weeks ago.

I've always had an affinity for old tools and stuff. Garage and estate sales are the bain of my SO's existence. Luckily we are limited to a rather smallish 1.5 car garage so if more items come in, some need to go out. For now

Thanks to Garage Journal I am so much more educated on a vast range of subjects. Last summer I traveled back to my family's former homestead in MB. Of course I found an anvil hanging out in an old blacksmith shed there and it followed me home. Garage Journal subsequently made me learned about anvils!

I just hope that I can start to contribute back to those who have given me so much enjoyment and knowledge. Starting now!

Cheers,

RyanE

Thanks for the welcome!

In reality, I have been lurking here for almost 3 years :lol_hitti and already feel like I belong here, despite not posting.

I really appreciate the variety of subjects covered on GJ and the diversity of people from all parts of the world.

I lived in Perth WA from 2011 to 2012 while working in the Pilbara and make a point of viewing posts from Australia such as 1/2 cup's great shed thread. Keeps my ties with Oz strong! I miss running down to Coventry Fasteners or Bunnings for some supplies! Always timed my Bunnings runs so that I could grab a Coke and a sausage out front

Welcome fellow Calgarian. Up in the northern hills of Coventry Hills myself, you will see progress reports soon! You?

I am down in Aspen Hills. For now - hoping to change that soon. I get the feeling that my neighbors are hardly fond of my garage time.

The Pilbara in WA would be very different to Canada. I take it you worked on one of the mines.

Yes, the Pilbara was like nothing I have ever seen. Mmm spinifex! I worked on determining the route and construction material borrow pits for the rail-line at Roy Hill and a power-line near Newman.

I did however spend a few months travelling around Australia by 4x4 and motorcycle. Did the Nullabor, the Great Central Rd, Oodnadatta Line, Flinders Ranges on my motorcycle in 2 different crossings of the country. Spent quite a bit of time in SW WA on time off. Went up the E-coast from Melbourne to Sydney and back through the "Alps" and went skiing at Thredbo.

If it were't so far from Canada I would spend more time in Australia - it's a great place. Made some good friends there.

Yeah welcome.

You worked for Pilbara Iron? What site(s)?

I worked for a contractor that was designing the railway from Pt. Hedland to the Roy Hill Mine and spent many months on the proposed alignment route. I also spent some time between Newman and BHP Jimblebar for a new power-line alignment and construction.

You have seen more of Australian than many Aussies.

I tried my best to do it justice and barely scratched the surface. I hope to get back. I actually kept my motorcycle at a friend's place in the hills outside of Melbourne with the intentions of using it again.

Welcome from Southern Ontario!
I have some friends in Calgary I've been wanting to visit, they say it's a great place to live. Gas prices are low, maybe this is the summer to make the trip.
