It blows my mind how many vises you guys can find on CL! I search multiple times a day (work on a computer all day) and never find these old USA vises. If they pop up, people are asking CRAZY prices.

CAG: don't feel like the lone ranger. i used to have my pick of maybe 2 or 3 good vises a day even with a few other members that live close to me picking and flipping them. i know i'm slowing down, but even if i wasn't picky there are just barely one good one a week now so keep looking or shoot me a PM because i'm selling a few and maybe a pallet of vises needs to go your direction too.

Toolman: sorry to say, but it might be cheaper to buy an old vise off Craigslist or Ebay than to buy a new dynamic jaw. Columbian is still making new vises so a quick googling might get you to a new part. if you were closer i'd probably have an old gem to sell you, but unless you are buying one of my bigger ones the shipping costs might kill a good deal.

good luck and curious if you were using it as a press or hitting it with a BFH or did it just break?

^ this.

You have a "newer" Columbian vise - they just don't hold up like the older ones. Pictured is my 504 1/2. It has the same sized jaws as yours, but probably weighs 3 times as much. You'd be much better off with a vintage vise!

Edit: I found this one last summer on CL for $50. All I did to it was scrub it with WD-40 and a wire brush

Brian

Locally, prices are absurd for turds, and the rest are run of the mill record no.2/3 in junk condition.

Guess the well has dried up.

Another Loch Erie Monster? Another Unicorn?

No doubt to compete with their cross city rivals.....

I've seen 18s and 28s, this would have been massive...

I'm setting claim to the south east Pennsylvania territory, from the Susquehanna river to Penns walking purchase territory. Temporary time share territory to the shores of New Jersey in summer months! Territory map thread? Haha

Tool man- good on you for quiting that vice. I'm smoke free 3years, still chewing nicorette and I have a new vise! :) seriously, good work man!

Oak-can I see your leather vise jaws? I'm in the process of wet molding jaws right now! I just need to go buy some copper rivets for them.

ALL: best of luck to all of you that think you can claim an area. :D:D

JKB: Holland's 9 inch wide jaw vise must weight close to 400 pounds. does anybody own one or have a picture of it?

ALL: i was looking for something else on Ebay and noticed there is Reed 208 with a broken slide with a few days left in the auction already up to $500. if it was in great shape it's easily worth that, but wonder what this broken one is going to sell for?

I've paid $200 many times for a bullet. Depending on its Model, Size and Condition, with your eye Joe, I bet its a real keeper. Show and tell Please!

What is a good vintage vise to go after for a restoration? I don't want to spend much... So the big names are out of the question as they seem to fetch a lot even all rusted up. I want a swivel base and around 4.5-5" jaw.

How much is "much"? I just spent $80 on a Reed 4" swivel in near mint condition, just needed cleaning and somebody to repaint it.

I'd just keep looking on Craigslist and make a habit of stopping at pawn shops & yard sales. I don't know any American vises that cost less, though a Wilton always seems to cost more.

Joe: so did a few more get DROPPED off in your driveway this morning? :D or are they just on your route to pick up this weekend?? seriously i wish that #23 was within a couple hour drive because i could use it, but since i'm still ORGANIZING and NOT BUYING VISES i'll just have to wait for another one.

Bl00: figures Demo would have a 9 inch Holland's. i wonder if he or anybody has found the Pittsburgh RR vise yet?

MR: you might want to go in your GJ profile and put in your location because if you participate in the forum i wouldn't be surprised if a nice vise for not too much money might find it's way to you without shipping. agreed Wiltons fetch more and it's rare to find a good old 4 or 4.5 inch vise for under $100, but if you want to spend the time looking and can run to buy it then it can. or if your time is valuable pay somebody for their time that did the work to find it.

good luck

VA, that might be a simple ratio and proportion problem, I come out with 365lbs. 325/8lbs = X/9lbs = 365lbs Lets see how close this algebra problem comes out. I use this formula on pictures where I know what one dimension is.

ALL: i did have a Holland's 19 saved that i think Bl00 posted, but can't recall who's vise he mentioned it was. maybe VA's search magic can find the post?? i do like Holland's and they are built as good and as stout as any vise ever made.

Anyone know if this looks like the original handle on this Wilton woodworkers vise? I just sold it and need to finish it. Of course now I have 2 vises to finish and not much time.
Sorry for the crappy picture I took.

Here's one for sale locally that appears to have the same handle.

Bagged89S10:

Agree with others, that it looks original on the handle.

Lots of those particular Wilton WW vises came from the schools, with some having the quick release feature and others not.

Either way, good heavy duty WW vise in about the 26 pound range.

Veeps, I have a drawing of the Wilton Woodworking Handle for reference. Their pretty light handles since they are made out of 7/8 pipe.

Don't despair if you're having trouble finding affordable vises. They're still out there. I nearly stumbled on this 5 inch Desmond Simplex No. 51 at an estate sale today. Then I went to a flea market and stubbed my toe on this Craftsman 5169. The Simplex was $45 and the Cman was $35.

Thanks fellas for the info on the Wilton handle. Now just debating on what to do with the handle because I need to make the vise look as nice as the Parker 974 I restored for him. And it's getting matching paint too.

Scored this Wilton bullet 9350SJ swivel jaw and base vise today for $104.26 at an antique store today. Guar Exp date 6-30-1964. More pictures later. It does have a chip on the other side that will need some work. No other issues so far, even has the finger savers! The swivel pin is stuck of course.
